RISK ASSESSMENT OF
COMMONLY USED HOUSEHOLD
PRODUCTS:STEPS TOWARDS
GREEN-ALTERNATIVE
★ Chemicals are used in the home
“EVERYDAY”.
★ These include cleaning fluids, plant food,
paint and fuels.
★ Getting to know the labels on chemical
products will help protect you and your
family from harm.
★ Since chemicals can be toxic ,
it is important to understand
how they can affect health
★ To determine the risk of
harmful health effects from a
substance , we must first know
how toxic the substance is ,
how much , and by what
means, a person is exposed
and how sensitive that person
is to the substance.

❖ BIOMONITORING
➢ Biomonitoring is the measuring of chemicals in the human body,
specifically in blood, urine, serum, saliva or tissues.
➢ Biomonitoring involves the use of organisms to assess environmental
contamination, such as of surrounding air or water. It can be done
qualitatively by observing and noting changes in organisms, or
quantitatively by measuring accumulation of chemicals in organism
tissues.
➢ Measuring chemicals in human tissues is a highly effective means to
assess human exposure to pollution.

Chemicals
TRICLOSAN PBDEs
Report presents
nationally
representative,cumulati

L
● National Report on Human Exposure to
Environmental chemicals studies exposure to
various environmental chemicals on US
population using population.
● In each survey period, the reported chemicals or
their metabolites were measured in blood, serum
and urine samples from random subsamples of
the National Health and Nutrition Examination
Survey(NHANES)
In the Fourth National Report On
Human exposure to Environmental
Chemicals,CDC Scientists measured
Triclosan in the urine of 2,517
Participants aged 6yrs and older
who took part in the National Health
and Nutrition Examination Survey
during 2003-2004.
TRICLOSAN
Scientists found that,Triclosan was
detected in the Urine of nearly 75% of the
people tested
In the Fourth National Report ,CDC
Scientists measured Ten Different
PBDEs in the blood serum of atleast
1,985 participants aged 12yrs and
older who took part in National Health
and Nutrition Examination Survey
during 2003-2004
PBDEs
In the Fourth Report, scientists found that one
PBDE,Demonstrated the highest levels.These
levels for the U.S population are roughly 3 to
10 times higher than the levels seen in
participants of various studies from European
Countries.
RISK
ASSESSMENT
Risk assessment is a
systematic approach to
assessing the potential
health risks associated with
exposure to known or
potentially toxic agents

ACRYLAMIDE IS MAINLY FOUND IN :
COFFEE FRENCH
FRIES AND

CEREALS
➢ Acrylamide gets formed in
food during high

ovarian cancer
● EFSA has performed a risk
assessment concluding that
acrylamide in food
potentially increases the risk
of developing cancer for
consumer in all age groups.
● IARC classified acrylamide
as a Group-2A carcinogen.
MAIN OUTCOMES:
AGE GROUP SOURCE OF EXPOSURE
INFANTS baby foods,processed cereal-based
baby foods(rusks,biscuits)
ADOLESCENTS potato fried product,soft
bread,cereals
ADULTS potato fried product,soft
bread,cereals
● Highest concentration of acrylamide were
found in coffee and potato chips.
● infants and children are most exposed
population group with exposures at 3.4
microgram/kg b.w per day
● other population groups were exposed at
2.0 microgram/kg b.w per day.
HOW TO REDUCE
EXPOSURE TO
ACRYLAMIDE
Limit some cooking methods
like baking ,frying and
roasting
Baking foods to a golden
