RIPE NCC UpdateMore Engagement with Members
• Holding lightweight “member lunches” in cities
where our staff already have another engagement

• Meetings last 2-3 hours and attract 20-30 members

• Typically members who don’t often come to
meetings

• Members get an update on the latest news and a
chance to meet with our staff in person

• We gain a lot of valuable feedback on the views and
priorities of our members
4
Axel Pawlik - AFRINIC 22 - June 2015
RIPE NCC UpdateResource Transfers
• We still have IPv4 addresses left — we have more than
a /8 in the available pool

- Every member can get 1,024 addresses (/22)

- Block reserved for Internet Exchange Points

• “Alignment of Transfer Requirements” policy change
avoids LIRs being created solely to transfer /22
allocations

• RIPE NCC Executive Board resolution that at least one
full year’s membership fee must be paid before an LIR
can close down
5
Axel Pawlik - APNIC 40 - September 2015
RIPE NCC UpdateResource Transfers
• All Internet number resources can now be
transferred within the RIPE NCC service region

• Inter-RIR transfers available from end of September

• Number of IPv4 transfers increasing:

- 919 transfers in 2014 / 2,021 so far in 2015

• 13 IPv6 / 18 ASN transfers so far

-Mainly due to members transferring their entire networks

RIPE NCC UpdateAS Number Status
• 180 16-bit ASNs in remaining pool

• Still have 2,850 returned 16-bit ASNs, most that are
referenced in a number of database objects — will
assign from this pool in future

• We have assigned 32-bit ASNs by default since 2009,
which has encouraged adoption

RIPE NCC UpdateRIPE Atlas
• With your help we’re building the largest Internet
measurement network ever made.
12
Axel Pawlik - APNIC 40 - September 2015
RIPE NCC UpdateRIPE Atlas
• Currently at 8,568 connected probes and 138 RIPE
Atlas anchors; aiming for 10,000 probes

• Being more selective about distribution — only
looking for ASes that don’t already have a probe

• Happy to have APNIC’s help

- APNIC hosting 10 RIPE Atlas anchors

- Helping to distribute probes in your region

• Find out how others are using RIPE Atlas:

Axel Pawlik - APNIC 40 - September 2015
RIPE NCC UpdateK-root Expansion
• New architecture is simpler and more cost effective
for hosts, and removes operational overhead for us

• 15 nodes added in 2015 / 16 existing nodes

• Replacing existing nodes with the new setup

• Now considering requests for new K-root hosted
nodes

• Contacting organisations that had previously
expressed interest to assess suitability

• APNIC hosting one node in Brisbane
14
Axel Pawlik - AFRINIC 22 - June 2015
RIPE NCC UpdatePolicy Proposals Under Discussion
• 2014-03 “Remove Multihoming Requirements for
AS Number Assignments”
- Allows networks to request ASNs without being multihomed

• 2015-03 “Assessment Criteria for IPv6 Initial
Allocation Size”
- Widens the criteria the RIPE NCC looks at for initial IPv6
allocations

• 2015-04 “RIPE Resource Transfer Policies”
- Creates a single transfer policy document for all types of
Internet number resources
15
Axel Pawlik - APNIC 40 - September 2015
RIPE NCC UpdateLegacy Policy Implementation
• Legacy resource holders who are not already
members can now choose to:

• Become a RIPE NCC member

• Register their resources through a sponsoring LIR

• Have a direct contract with the RIPE NCC

• Stay as they are

• 62/192 million legacy addresses now covered by
one of the contractual options

• All legacy holders have now been contacted
16
Axel Pawlik - APNIC 40 - September 2015
RIPE NCC UpdateRPKI Update 17
• 3,000+ members have requested a certificate (25%)

• Members created ROAs covering:

- 2,450 unique ASNs

- 11,960 IPv4 prefixes; more than eight /8s of address space

- 1,800 IPv6 prefixes; more than 11,300 /32 blocks
