After two years of art classes, Humber students will finally graduate. From April 21 – May 7,
2015, Humber College will have an art gallery called ‘Riff & Riot.’ The reception will be held
on April 21st from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The gallery will display the artwork of Humber’s graduates.
Each student will showcase visual art and digital art. These pieces of visual and digital art will
include what students from their classes like illustration, anatomy, acrylic or oil paint,
scratchboard, photography, and much more.
The artwork that the students display is bound to bring a variety of emotions in spectators like
joy and fear. You see, the theme, Riff &Riot is unique. Riff means variation. There will be a
variety of artwork. Though, it also means rift; rift meaning separation. Riot, on the other hand
means contrast and tension. Why was such a theme picked? It’s because during the time of the
students, they have struggled. They struggled to complete their work, students got low marks,
students dropped out, students couldn’t pass certain classes, classmates fought against each
other, and etc. It wasn’t just the students who struggled but the teachers as well. They had to
mark, teach, produce artwork, and etc.
The art business has become very competitive. Only a few artists will be elevated to heights of
glory and fame. These chosen ones have what it takes to succeed in the corporate world: they
produced well liked work, they are good with technology, they are obedient, and they are social.
Therefore, artists compete against each other to be one of the chosen. With competition, comes
conflict and tension among other people.
Many people will attend the gallery students, friends, family members, the teachers including
Cole Swanson, Stephanie Davidson, Marc Colangelo, Larry Einstein, and program coordinator
Noni Kaur, and even art mentors, including famous ones. Cole gave out an assignment that lasts
throughout the semester. Students obviously have a certain art career that they wish to pursue.
Therefore, their mission is to find an artist who operates in that field. The student must contact
that artist so that they can interview that art and meet with them. The art will gain knowledge on
what is it like to have that career.
As the gallery takes place, students will have a chance to unwind and relax after semesters of
work. In this gallery, the people will look at the artwork, socialize with one another, eat delicious
food and drink refreshing drinks. In the end, there will be students who have gotten what they
paid for: knowledge of art, a diploma, and hopefully a career. The past is dead. The present is
dying. But the future is beginning.
