       1. Learning Literacy
Learning Styles: Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic

           i)    Write them down: then finish these statements “I thought I was” and “I know I am”

                 Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences > intrapersonal, interpersonal, bodily - kinaesthetic,
                       logical – mathematical, linguistic, musical, spatial, naturalist

           ii)   What is Gardner’s work?

Learning Plan: Review what you set out to do this year as far as your goals, how you planned to meet
                     your goals, and reflect on whether or not you met your goals and what if
anything of a                      process nature you learned this semester.

           iii) 3-4 sentence reflection

Content and Process: List as many things as you may have learned/ discovered on the Thinking Quad
                           provided. This could include but not be limited to skills (College writing),
ideas (Edit                           by read aloud), processes (Google Groups), attitudes (Figure it
out),       knowledge                               (Non fiction).

           iv) (Insert Thinking Quad)




       2. College Level Writing
The Memo



Reflection: on the function a memo serves, what are the components of a memo, what
            occurs within these components or sections of the memo.



Practice: Imagine you are a concerned, tax paying citizen, gainfully employed and a
responsible                  law abiding citizen in your community. You have discovered lately
that stores in your        neighbourhood, including the one you work for, has begun refusing
the use of cash as a        method of payment; and not just pennies or 50 and 100 dollar bills
– cash is simply not        accepted. This possibility is not as far fetched as it once was given
the popularity of        debit and credit cards. Your task is first to think of who you would
write a memo to,         what your purpose is, what important information should be
contained in the memo in          order to provide context, what argument(s) you will make
and finally what        recommendations you would make. Please review the exemplars
provided in order to         better understand and apply the proper format.




The Short Investigative Report



Reflection: on the function a memo serves, what are the components of a memo, what
                       occurs within these components or sections of the memo.



Practice: Create a short investigative report on a subject/topic of your choosing. Be sure to
                  review the exemplars provided in order to better understand and apply the
proper                        format.



*NOTE* Those students who have yet to submit a short investigative report this semester
should indicate that they want this memo or short report evaluated and a mark recorded.
3. Research Process
Four step Approach



Students should complete this section of the review on their own time at home or in a location
where they have access to a computer and the internet. Under the FILES tab locate and open
the PowerPoint File entitled Research4C4U.PPT



   1)          What is the first stage of the research process

   2)          What is the second stage of the research process

   3)          What is the third stage of the research process

   4)          What is the fourth stage of the research process



   5)          What are some of the “actions”* you perform in the

*In order to provide answers for each of the stages you should think of what it is you need
   to do during each stage. Use active verbs like gather, assess, collaborate etc.




   6)          What two activities did you perform during this semester that would qualify as
   Stage 4 activities.




   7)         Identify 3 characteristics of a “scholarly” or “appropriate for research” website




   8)         What “resources” other than the internet are available to a researcher?




   9)         Which of these “resources” is the most reliable and easy to access?




   10)       What things did you discover/learn about the Research Process this semester?




4. Non Fiction: Biography, Creative Non Fiction & News


   1)         What are some of the different forms “Non fiction” works take?



   2)         If fiction reveals subject matter invented in “the author’s mind” where does the

   creative non fiction writer get his or her subject matter.



   3)         Why are essays, photos, dictionaries and blueprints examples of non fiction
   texts?
4)        The internet is rife (filled with) articles written by average citizens; much of
           what is written by these people is passed off as fact. Read the article entitled “The Power
           of Drugs” and answer the following:



           i) Provide two examples from the article where the author uses “autobiographical”
           information to enhance his point of view.

           ii) Provide an example of how this writer exaggerates or stretches the truth.

           iii) Does this article have a unifying point or idea followed throughout? if it does not
           explain how and why it does not.

           iv) If this were a research essay or article what would you expect in the article that is
           currently absent?




The power of Drugs



For years, I envisioned myself playing professional league sports. Baseball, basketball, boxing,
and football could have been my professional league participation. The skills and talents I utilized
while playing those sports, caused me to believe, I could have been called, “America’s Greatest
Athlete”.

Well, it is like this; at the age of 14, I began smoking marijuana. As days turned into weeks, and
weeks into months, and months into years, I was still using drugs. I used drugs for more than a
decade. I swore unto myself that I would never intake any other drug but marijuana. Marijuana
felt good; it gave me a quick fix, and never did I think it would bring harm into my life. But the
addiction from this drug caused me to experiment with one drug after another. Never in a million
years did I believe I would ever be convinced in using cocaine, heroin, dippers, pre-mo, volumes,
Tylenol 3’s & 4’s, codeine, syrup, hard liquor, beer, or any other chemical that works against my
living and vision. After using all those drugs, do you think my brain system is normal? Wow,
marijuana surely worked a clever trick on me. Actually, most of the problems my life faced were
because of drugs being in my presence and in my body.

One day, while I was getting high, death literarily became my experience. My heart stopped
beating for 11 minutes. Then, I went into a coma, and stayed in it for ten days. While in the
coma, my brain functions were being reconfigured. Doctors said, “If he ever comes out of the
coma, his brain would live as a vegetable”. More than 15 years has now passed, and my body is
still being rehabbed. Wow, what great power drugs have! After experiencing a horrible tragedy
such as this, it left me with only these words to say, “I Did Not Know drugs would cause damage
to my body, and destroy my athletic dreams both at the same time”.

In 2008, 167 murders were recorded. In 2007, in St. Louis, Mo., there were 138 murders; 2,761
robberies; 4,500 aggravated assaults; 33,901 property crime; 7,289 burglaries; 20,330 larceny
thefts; 6,282 vehicle thefts. Ninety percent of the crimes committed were by a bunch of drug
users. If you continue using drugs, one of the above-mentioned crime acts just might be your
experience. You just never know which crime you will find yourself experiencing. That’s scary! You
people keep looking over my story. Do not wait until a crime hits home.

Learning Literacy Learning Styles: Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic i) Write them down: then finish these statements “I thought I was” and “I know I am” Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences > intrapersonal, interpersonal, bodily - kinaesthetic, logical – mathematical, linguistic, musical, spatial, naturalist ii) What is Gardner’s work? Learning Plan: Review what you set out to do this year as far as your goals, how you planned to meet your goals, and reflect on whether or not you met your goals and what if anything of a process nature you learned this semester. iii) 3-4 sentence reflection Content and Process: List as many things as you may have learned/ discovered on the Thinking Quad provided.   • 2. The Memo Reflection: on the function a memo serves, what are the components of a memo, what occurs within these components or sections of the memo. Practice: Imagine you are a concerned, tax paying citizen, gainfully employed and a responsible law abiding citizen in your community. You have discovered lately that stores in your neighbourhood, including the one you work for, has begun refusing the use of cash as a method of payment; and not just pennies or 50 and 100 dollar bills – cash is simply not accepted. This possibility is not as far fetched as it once was given the popularity of debit and credit cards. Your task is first to think of who you would write a memo to, what your purpose is, what important information should be contained in the memo in order to provide context, what argument(s) you will make and finally what recommendations you would make. Please review the exemplars provided in order to better understand and apply the proper format. The Short Investigative Report Reflection: on the function a memo serves, what are the components of a memo, what occurs within these components or sections of the memo. Practice: Create a short investigative report on a subject/topic of your choosing. Be sure to review the exemplars provided in order to better understand and apply the proper format. *NOTE* Those students who have yet to submit a short investigative report this semester should indicate that they want this memo or short report evaluated and a mark recorded.
  • 3. 3. Research Process Four step Approach Students should complete this section of the review on their own time at home or in a location where they have access to a computer and the internet. Non Fiction: Biography, Creative Non Fiction & News 1) What are some of the different forms “Non fiction” works take? 2) If fiction reveals subject matter invented in “the author’s mind” where does the creative non fiction writer get his or her subject matter. 3) Why are essays, photos, dictionaries and blueprints examples of non fiction texts?
  • 5. 4) The internet is rife (filled with) articles written by average citizens; much of what is written by these people is passed off as fact. Read the article entitled “The Power of Drugs” and answer the following: i) Provide two examples from the article where the author uses “autobiographical” information to enhance his point of view. ii) Provide an example of how this writer exaggerates or stretches the truth. iii) Does this article have a unifying point or idea followed throughout? if it does not explain how and why it does not. iv) If this were a research essay or article what would you expect in the article that is currently absent? The power of Drugs For years, I envisioned myself playing professional league sports. Baseball, basketball, boxing, and football could have been my professional league participation. The skills and talents I utilized while playing those sports, caused me to believe, I could have been called, “America’s Greatest Athlete”. Well, it is like this; at the age of 14, I began smoking marijuana. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, and months into years, I was still using drugs. I used drugs for more than a decade. I swore unto myself that I would never intake any other drug but marijuana. Marijuana felt good; it gave me a quick fix, and never did I think it would bring harm into my life. But the addiction from this drug caused me to experiment with one drug after another. Never in a million years did I believe I would ever be convinced in using cocaine, heroin, dippers, pre-mo, volumes,
  • 6. Tylenol 3’s & 4’s, codeine, syrup, hard liquor, beer, or any other chemical that works against my living and vision. After using all those drugs, do you think my brain system is normal? Wow, marijuana surely worked a clever trick on me. Actually, most of the problems my life faced were because of drugs being in my presence and in my body. One day, while I was getting high, death literarily became my experience. My heart stopped beating for 11 minutes. Then, I went into a coma, and stayed in it for ten days. While in the coma, my brain functions were being reconfigured. Doctors said, “If he ever comes out of the coma, his brain would live as a vegetable”. More than 15 years has now passed, and my body is still being rehabbed. Wow, what great power drugs have! After experiencing a horrible tragedy such as this, it left me with only these words to say, “I Did Not Know drugs would cause damage to my body, and destroy my athletic dreams both at the same time”. In 2008, 167 murders were recorded. In 2007, in St. Louis, Mo., there were 138 murders; 2,761 robberies; 4,500 aggravated assaults; 33,901 property crime; 7,289 burglaries; 20,330 larceny thefts; 6,282 vehicle thefts. Ninety percent of the crimes committed were by a bunch of drug users. If you continue using drugs, one of the above-mentioned crime acts just might be your experience. You just never know which crime you will find yourself experiencing. That’s scary! You people keep looking over my story. Do not wait until a crime hits home.
