A sonographer uses ultrasound imaging equipment to produce diagnostic images and scans of a patient's anatomy to assist physicians in diagnosis; their duties include preparing patients and equipment, performing scans, analyzing results, and communicating findings to doctors; successful sonographers require strong technical, interpersonal, and physical skills to accurately operate machinery and obtain quality images.

2. A sonographer, or ultrasonographer, is a healthcare
professional, who specialize in the use of ultrasonic
imaging devices to produce diagnostic images, scans,
videos, or 3D volumes of anatomy and diagnostic data,
frequently a radiographer but may be any healthcare
professional with the appropriate training.

4. Initial Handling/Setup
 Review of requisition
 Enter information/demographic data into a computer
system interfaced/integrated with imaging equipment
 Add service recipient identification to images
Set-up equipment prior to exam
 Prepare examining room
 Prepare equipment and materials for the patient
 Prepare room for aseptic techniques.

5. Patient Preparation / Instructions
 Assess the patient’s status
 Educate patient
 Consult and review the chart
 Explain exam
 Ensure the consent for treatment is complete
 Prepare and position the patient

6. Diagnostic/Therapeutic Activities
 Perform assessment (pre and post exam monitoring)
 Administer radiopharmaceuticals, contrast media and
medications
 Perform service recipient care activities

7.  Analyzing the data collected and reporting the
ultrasound findings to the physician in an oral and
written fashion for diagnosis
 Using independent judgment whether to extend the
scope of the ultrasound examination or not based on the
ultrasound findings
 Interacting and collaborating with physicians and other
health care professionals for providing a good quality
care of the patient

9. Detail oriented.
Diagnostic imaging workers must follow precise instructions
to obtain the images needed to diagnose and treat patients.
They must also pay attention to the screen while scanning a
patient’s body because the cues that contrast healthy areas
with unhealthy ones may be subtle.
 Hand-eye coordination.
To get quality images, diagnostic imaging workers must be
able to accurately move equipment on the patient’s body in
response to what they see on the screen.

10.  Interpersonal skills.
Diagnostic imaging workers must work closely with
patients. Sometimes patients are in extreme pain or mental
stress, and they must get cooperation from the patient to
create usable images.
 Physical stamina.
Diagnostic imaging workers are on their feet for long
periods and must be able to lift and move patients who
need assistance.

Diagnostic imaging workers must understand how to operate
complex machinery and computerized images.
