Health care needs of returning military and their families Deployment, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), balancing family with long work hours are all part of an everyday military life. Mental, physical and social changes occur on a daily basis, affecting the health care needs of our military. However, events and issues like these can affect veterans and their families throughout their lives, even though they deserve the best, veterans can be neglected. From personal experience, military life is unique. A community within a community, fighting for our nation’s best interest. This paper reflects how we as nurses can be the best advocate for them. Health Care Needs Looking at health needs of veterans and their families, they can be physical, psychological or psychosocial. Physical includes combat injury which links closely with psychological concerns including PTSD and substance abuse: drugs and alcohol ( Spelman , Hunt, Seal & Burgo -Black, 2012). Psychosocial effects the family directly, including marital, financial instability and social isolation. Together all these have a significant impact on the everyday life, and the reorientation from deployments and adjustment back into the community ( Spelman et al ., 2012). Nurse Advocate for Military Nurses are in the frontline of health care. Therefore, nurses are in the critical position to speak out and be the best advocate for our clients (Laureate, 2012). However, providing safe and high-quality health care is a collaboration effort, working in unity with other health care professionals and administrators ( Milstead , 2016). The American Nurses Association (ANA) operates in unison with the Veterans Health Administration and the Department of Defense as advocates to improve veterans’ health care needs. Another valuable advocacy agency is Mental Health America; with over 200 associates in 41 States, they provide both current and former military with information to prevent the stigma related to mental health issues like PTSD and addiction, assisting in the reintegrating into family life (Mental Health America, 2016). Strength-based nursing refers an approach to health care which promotes empowerment, hope, and self-efficacy. This principle underpins the strengths model outlook of people as an energetic contributor in the delivery of service instead of diagnostic categories, passive consumers, and objects to be managed (Noble et al., 2000, p. 144). Health promotion and healing, the third principle aims at ensuring that better care is provided to the patients. The general emphasis of this principle is to ensure that the general outcome in health care is positive. The principle of Collaborative partnership aims at building a strong relationship between the patient, family, community and the professionals. All the parties involved in the partnership share a common goal which is better health care. Family nurse practitioner (FNP) is my specialty. A family nurse practitioner can be defined as a registered nurse who has specialized clinical and educational training in family unit. In Maryland, this is an expected outcome in my daily practice where I use my full power to treat patients for the optimal health outcomes. Another area I will strongly indulge in is the necessity for continuing education. As a health care professional, we take on the role of a lifetime learner as we continue to learn best practices and evidence-based practice updates that form as time goes on. Health care is an everchanging field and staying up to date on your education and health understandings can be the difference between patient outcomes. Working in Oncology care, the Oncology Nursing Society or ONS is a national professional specialty nursing association that I have been an ongoing member of since 2010. As an organization, their mission is “to advance excellence in oncology nursing and quality cancer care” with a vision “to lead the transformation of cancer care” (Oncology Nursing Society, 2017). Innovation, excellence and advocacy is what guides ONS to improve the quality of life and outcomes for patients with cancer and their families as well as improving the nursing profession (Oncology Nursing Society, 2017). They are continually working towards promoting respect and recognition on behalf of patients and the nursing profession. They not only engage in providing education and training for nurses but also engage in international outreach and partnering with other organizations that share common goals to enhance quality of care for people with cancer. ONS sends members to the Nurse in Washington Internship program annually giving attendees a better understanding of political, legislative and regulatory issues facing nurses ending with a visit to Capitol Hill to influence policy for nurses and the patients they serve (Saria et al., 2014). Cancer care is complex and continuously changing. As a member of the health care team, I feel the values of excellence, innovation and advocacy are reflected in their mission and vision statements. I also feel their mission and vision statements also mirrors the organization I work for. As a health care provider, Aurora Health Care, helps people to live well, providing the best care possible during and after a patient’s hospitalization. They support and encourage their medical/oncology nurses to become oncology and chemotherapy certified. They provide annual mandatory cancer education and offer monthly oncology seminars for all health care providers. The also encourage and support local, state and national seminars as well for their nurses. As a health care provider, they are devoted to providing the most current up to date treatment and promote safety through the encouragement and participation of evidence based initiatives and quality improvement projects.

Nursing shortages are not a new concept. As the Baby boomers age and more nurses retire, nurses' needs will intensify (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2021). The nursing industry is expected to increase 7% by 2029, with an estimated 175,900 RN openings each year through 2029 (AACN, 2021). Nursing shortages are multifactual. Nursing shortage factors include: nursing school enrolment is not growing with the demand, a significant portion of nurses are nearing retirement age, and insufficient staffing driving nurses to leave the profession (AACN, 2021). One area, in particular, that is sensitive to nursing shortages, and retention is correctional nursing. "Retention of nursing staff is more complex in a correctional facility" (Chafin & Biddle, 2013). One study noted only 20% of the nurses remained employed after three-years at this particular facility (Chafin & Biddle, 2013).
In a correctional facility, the primary focus is given to security, with healthcare being second. Providing care within a correctional setting is very different than a hospital setting. Facility security is always the focus and drive. How a nurse interacts with patients (inmates) within a facility is vastly different from a non-correctional environment. Being overly friendly or nice can wreak havoc and be deemed "over familiarizing" with inmates or been seen as a weakness by inmates creating a safety concern (Walsh, 2009). The correctional setting comes with its inherent dangers and stressors, leading to nurses' high turnover.
The prison I was formerly employed with has significantly reduced nurses due to terminations and resignments. As an employee with the Michigan Department of Corrections, a nurse can be pulled from any facility to fill the needs of another facility at any given time of which has recently happened. Marquette Branch Prison is to have nine registered nurses in total, and right now, they only have four RNs employed there. The facility has tried to offer signing bonuses to retain RNs. They have changed some procedures to make it safer for the nursing staff, such as correctional escorts when going to the cells, and have reached out to contract agencies to secure nurses. However, none of these measures have led to success. As the shortage increases, the remaining nurses are forced to work more overtime in an already demanding and stressful environment leading to an even faster turnover and increased safety concerns.
Living in a rural area already stresses the number of nurses available, and trying to recruit and retain nurses within the correctional system proves to be an even harder strain. Advanced practice nurses (APNs) have become an essential part of contemporary health care system in the United States. These specialists have the key role in the provision of quality, safe, and cost-effective health care to broad populations. They make an invaluable contribution to the transformation of the health care system to provide better customer experience in health care institutions. The changes in the American society including demographic changes, technologic progress, and the progress in the area of policy-making to provide access to the health care services to all suggests that the roles of the ANPs will continue to evolve and gain more significance in society. Effective functioning of health care system in contemporary conditions is impossible without the contribution made by nurse practitioners, nurse informaticists, nurse educators, and nurse administrators. This final paper aims to summarize the information learned during this course concerning the significance of advanced practice nursing roles, legislative regulations that control their scope of practice, and their contribution in the area of policy-making related to health care.
Advanced Practice Roles in Nursing
Advanced nursing practice is a growing specialty in the nursing profession with the broad scope of practice. APNs work in a variety of fields and settings, including both clinical and non-clinical ones (Sun et al., 2015). These specialists engage in both direct and indirect patient care, and can become essential members of managerial teams or start their own business in family practice.
There are multiple roles in the advanced nursing practice including nurse practitioners, nurse educators, nurse administrators, and nurse informaticists. The advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) employed in clinical practice are the certified nurse-midwife (CNM), clinical nurse specialist (CNS), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), and nurse practitioner (NP) (Melnyk, Gallagher‐Ford, Long, & Fineout‐Overholt, 2014). All these clinical specialists are focused on patient care quality improvement and patient outcomes facilitation (Melnyk et al., 2014). As for the difference between APN and ANP, from the information above, it can be seen that the APN is a broader concept meaning the whole specialty of advanced practice nursing, and the ANP is a more specific concept describing the specialty of nurse practitioners employed in the clinical field.

Functions performed by the levels of police agencies in the United States run a gamut, from preventing the importation of illegal drugs to ensuring the safety of students at universities. The role of a police agency depends upon its location and jurisdiction. many as 23,000 local and state police agencies exist in the United States as of 2011, depending upon the method of counting them. Types of police agencies under state jurisdiction include local township or city police forces, state police, countrywide sheriff's offices, state highway patrols and constables. The structure and levels of state police agencies differs in each state. Hawaii, for instance, maintains no state police force per Se, but rather a Department of Public Safety. In most states, sheriffs serve as elected officials and act as political liaisons between state governments and police agencies. Various agencies perform specialized police functions at state level. Fish and game wardens, for instance, enforce hunting, fishing, boating laws. According to O'Connor, 35 U.S. states invest independent agencies such as the Department of Criminal Investigations, Department of Motor Vehicles and Alcohol Beverage Control with special, limited powers of law enforcement and investigation. When working with clients, there are many factors at play that not only formed the client in their early years, but also influence them now. The factors that influence them now can include: family, living situation, job situation, friends, religious community, etc. These factors can all influence how a social worker can assist in intervening in a client’s life. Each of these factors can also be included in different systems that influence the client (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016).
Let us take, for example, the case of Lester. Lester was an independent member in his community, church community, and was able to handle his life all by himself. However, after an automobile accident, Lester has done a 180 and can no longer clothe or clean himself (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). This is where systems perspective comes in: what systems in Lester’s life can the social worker use to assist Lester? From the case study, we know that Lester is close with his family, but his sister-in-law has really stepped up to the plate in helping with Lester’s care. Because of Lester’s connections with his religious community, they may be relied on for resources. Lester’s children have not been involved really at all, so they should not be counted on as a system on which Lester can rely (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). Lester will have to have new systems created for him, as he cannot create them for himself anymore.
As a social worker, it is crucial to know the systems on which a client can rely. System Theory is a good theory because of its ability to be used with any client. Knowing what resources are available to a client, as well as their interactions with those resources, is key in creating a treatment plan for the client.

As individuals enter the stage of late adulthood, their previous experiences, lifestyle and relationships help determine what, indeed, this stage will entail (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). In this week’s case study, 70- year-old Francine sought counseling for symptoms of depression, directly related to the loss of her partner of thirty years, Joan (Plummer, Makris and Brocksen, 2014). Since Francine’s family and loved ones were unaware of the extent of the the relationship between Francine and Joan, Francine did not have the necessary support as she navigated her way through her grieving process. She started drinking alcohol more often, after several years of sobriety (Plummer, et. al., 2014).
It can be assumed that Francine’s relationship with Joan, spanning thirty years, has certainly influenced her aging process. In long-term relationships, such as this one, individuals identify as being half of a partnership, as opposed to their individual beings (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). These defining relationships allow for individuals to feel supported and share experiences throughout their daily lives. This relationship is at the crux of Francine’s being, and although her partner has passed, its value can be utilized to help Francine cope with the loss and navigate through the remainder of her life. Additionally, Francine’s extensive experience within the workforce will also positively contribute to her aging process. Throughout these years, Francine’s interaction with people, both professionally and socially, have helped to promote a healthy inner being. While she may not be feeling sociable after Joan’s passing, referencing her forty year career will be a helpful tool for her clinician.
The case study mapped out the positive aspects in Francine’s life beautifully. Despite the depression she is currently experiencing, employing a Strength Based Perspective, focusing on her resiliency, would be an appropriate and effective method to help Francine achieve her most positive outcomes (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). Francine has shown a tremendous capacity throughout her life in identifying and removing the triggers causing harmful behaviors; this awareness resulted in many years of sobriety (Plummer, et. al., 2014). Nursing shortages are not a new concept. As the Baby boomers age and more nurses retire, nurses' needs will intensify (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2021). The nursing industry is expected to increase 7% by 2029, with an estimated 175,900 RN openings each year through 2029 (AACN, 2021). Nursing shortages are multifactual. Nursing shortage factors include: nursing school enrolment is not growing with the demand, a significant portion of nurses are nearing retirement age, and insufficient staffing driving nurses to leave the profession (AACN, 2021). One area, in particular, that is sensitive to nursing shortages, and retention is correctional nursing. "Retention of nursing staff is more complex in a correctional facility" (Chafin & Biddle, 2013). One study noted only 20% of the nurses remained employed after three-years at this particular facility (Chafin & Biddle, 2013).
In a correctional facility, the primary focus is given to security, with healthcare being second. Providing care within a correctional setting is very different than a hospital setting. Facility security is always the focus and drive. How a nurse interacts with patients (inmates) within a facility is vastly different from a non-correctional environment. Being overly friendly or nice can wreak havoc and be deemed "over familiarizing" with inmates or been seen as a weakness by inmates creating a safety concern (Walsh, 2009). The correctional setting comes with its inherent dangers and stressors, leading to nurses' high turnover.
The prison I was formerly employed with has significantly reduced nurses due to terminations and resignments. As an employee with the Michigan Department of Corrections, a nurse can be pulled from any facility to fill the needs of another facility at any given time of which has recently happened. Marquette Branch Prison is to have nine registered nurses in total, and right now, they only have four RNs employed there. The facility has tried to offer signing bonuses to retain RNs. They have changed some procedures to make it safer for the nursing staff, such as correctional escorts when going to the cells, and have reached out to contract agencies to secure nurses. However, none of these measures have led to success. As the shortage increases, the remaining nurses are forced to work more overtime in an already demanding and stressful environment leading to an even faster turnover and increased safety concerns.
Living in a rural area already stresses the number of nurses available, and trying to recruit and retain nurses within the correctional system proves to be an even harder strain. Advanced practice nurses (APNs) have become an essential part of contemporary health care system in the United States. These specialists have the key role in the provision of quality, safe, and cost-effective health care to broad populations. They make an invaluable contribution to the transformation of the health care system to provide better customer experience in health care institutions. The changes in the American society including demographic changes, technologic progress, and the progress in the area of policy-making to provide access to the health care services to all suggests that the roles of the ANPs will continue to evolve and gain more significance in society. Effective functioning of health care system in contemporary conditions is impossible without the contribution made by nurse practitioners, nurse informaticists, nurse educators, and nurse administrators. This final paper aims to summarize the information learned during this course concerning the significance of advanced practice nursing roles, legislative regulations that control their scope of practice, and their contribution in the area of policy-making related to health care.
Advanced Practice Roles in Nursing
Advanced nursing practice is a growing specialty in the nursing profession with the broad scope of practice. APNs work in a variety of fields and settings, including both clinical and non-clinical ones (Sun et al., 2015). These specialists engage in both direct and indirect patient care, and can become essential members of managerial teams or start their own business in family practice.
There are multiple roles in the advanced nursing practice including nurse practitioners, nurse educators, nurse administrators, and nurse informaticists. The advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) employed in clinical practice are the certified nurse-midwife (CNM), clinical nurse specialist (CNS), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), and nurse practitioner (NP) (Melnyk, Gallagher‐Ford, Long, & Fineout‐Overholt, 2014). All these clinical specialists are focused on patient care quality improvement and patient outcomes facilitation (Melnyk et al., 2014). As for the difference between APN and ANP, from the information above, it can be seen that the APN is a broader concept meaning the whole specialty of advanced practice nursing, and the ANP is a more specific concept describing the specialty of nurse practitioners employed in the clinical field.

Functions performed by the levels of police agencies in the United States run a gamut, from preventing the importation of illegal drugs to ensuring the safety of students at universities. The role of a police agency depends upon its location and jurisdiction. many as 23,000 local and state police agencies exist in the United States as of 2011, depending upon the method of counting them. Types of police agencies under state jurisdiction include local township or city police forces, state police, countrywide sheriff's offices, state highway patrols and constables. The structure and levels of state police agencies differs in each state. Hawaii, for instance, maintains no state police force per Se, but rather a Department of Public Safety. In most states, sheriffs serve as elected officials and act as political liaisons between state governments and police agencies. Various agencies perform specialized police functions at state level. Fish and game wardens, for instance, enforce hunting, fishing, boating laws. When working with clients, there are many factors at play that not only formed the client in their early years, but also influence them now. The factors that influence them now can include: family, living situation, job situation, friends, religious community, etc. These factors can all influence how a social worker can assist in intervening in a client’s life. Each of these factors can also be included in different systems that influence the client (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016).
Let us take, for example, the case of Lester. Lester was an independent member in his community, church community, and was able to handle his life all by himself. However, after an automobile accident, Lester has done a 180 and can no longer clothe or clean himself (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). This is where systems perspective comes in: what systems in Lester’s life can the social worker use to assist Lester? From the case study, we know that Lester is close with his family, but his sister-in-law has really stepped up to the plate in helping with Lester’s care. Because of Lester’s connections with his religious community, they may be relied on for resources. Lester’s children have not been involved really at all, so they should not be counted on as a system on which Lester can rely (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). Lester will have to have new systems created for him, as he cannot create them for himself anymore.
As a social worker, it is crucial to know the systems on which a client can rely. System Theory is a good theory because of its ability to be used with any client. Knowing what resources are available to a client, as well as their interactions with those resources, is key in creating a treatment plan for the client.

As individuals enter the stage of late adulthood, their previous experiences, lifestyle and relationships help determine what, indeed, this stage will entail (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). In this week’s case study, 70- year-old Francine sought counseling for symptoms of depression, directly related to the loss of her partner of thirty years, Joan (Plummer, Makris and Brocksen, 2014). Since Francine’s family and loved ones were unaware of the extent of the the relationship between Francine and Joan, Francine did not have the necessary support as she navigated her way through her grieving process. She started drinking alcohol more often, after several years of sobriety (Plummer, et. al., 2014).
It can be assumed that Francine’s relationship with Joan, spanning thirty years, has certainly influenced her aging process. In long-term relationships, such as this one, individuals identify as being half of a partnership, as opposed to their individual beings (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). These defining relationships allow for individuals to feel supported and share experiences throughout their daily lives. This relationship is at the crux of Francine’s being, and although her partner has passed, its value can be utilized to help Francine cope with the loss and navigate through the remainder of her life. Additionally, Francine’s extensive experience within the workforce will also positively contribute to her aging process. Throughout these years, Francine’s interaction with people, both professionally and socially, have helped to promote a healthy inner being. While she may not be feeling sociable after Joan’s passing, referencing her forty year career will be a helpful tool for her clinician.
The case study mapped out the positive aspects in Francine’s life beautifully. Despite the depression she is currently experiencing, employing a Strength Based Perspective, focusing on her resiliency, would be an appropriate and effective method to help Francine achieve her most positive outcomes (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). Francine has shown a tremendous capacity throughout her life in identifying and removing the triggers causing harmful behaviors; this awareness resulted in many years of sobriety (Plummer, et. al., 2014). During the time (6 years ago) when Andres was exiting middle adulthood and enter late adulthood, he was transitioning from a period of stability to a period of instability (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014). Major changes were ahead that would hit Andres hard. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs can be used to describe Andres past and present emotional and intellectual state. Prior to Andres diagnosis of a brain tumor and Parkinson’s disease, he achieved all of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Andres, physiological, safety, belongingness, self-esteem, and self-actualization needs were met. He was married, had children and grandchildren, had a great career, plenty of friends, and exercised daily. (Plummer et al, 2014). According to Maslow “When people fulfill the most elemental needs, they strive to meet those on the next level, and so forth, until the highest order of needs is reached (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016, p. 505). Emotionally and intellectually Andres was in a good place. Now, at the age of 68, he has disabilities and has lost most of his independence. He tries to de independent, but has injured himself several times. Activities as basic as eating and bathing unassisted are forever changed. Andres has lost his independence and has become depressed as he realizes more and more that his life is forever altered. “He now uses a cane and walker to ambulate. His speech is slow and soft. He requires assistance to get dressed and eat at times due to severe tremors and the loss of dexterity in his hands”
(Plummer et al, 2014). His safety needs were not being met, especially due to his instability, disabilities, and other medical conditions. This has resulted in a lack of belongingness, low-self-esteem, and no self-actualization. But over time Andres started to accept who he has become. Even though Andres hated asking for help, he realized that asking for assistance could have prevented some of the falls and injuries (Plummer et al, 2014). Andres, accepted the help of the social worker, accepted some help from family, realized that he could not change what has happened to him, and even reclaimed some of the friendships he once had with colleagues.

My field education experience is called “brighter future”. It is an agency that most of the employee are related. And so part of their confidently is made sure that they do not share information.
A description of agency policies or mandates about confirms to evidentiality
Today at my field placement, we discuss the important of confidentiality. According to my agency policies, we have to make sure that everything we do is kept confidential. For example, I was observing and learning how to input documents into the computer. I found out that, everyone in the agency is required to keep every file, everything they do about that client has to be protected.
The files that inputted in the computer were also kept manually and under the table so that no one would know about their client’s names.
Discussing any client outside the office was a no-no. They were also required not to address any problem faced by the clients until they have any a consent letter from the client.

The challenges that I see with confidentiality within this agency is how they interact with each other. Some of the confidential information is shared throughout the agency and take lightly as a joke. With the place that I am working at Paso Del Norte Children’s Development Center, I am working in a variety of places that require different safety plans. The number one rule is to always sit by the door and have the client sit in front of u while the door is behind you. This is in order to prevent any type of danger that may occur. The bright side about working with clients that are in our organization is that these clients are willing to meet with us. It is important to keep note that these clients are in need of help and come to us in order to get help with behavioral, students with special needs, or other specific behavior’s that kids need help with. As a State Correctional employee, we often use evaluations to analyze in-service training, policy reviews, programs and services, etc. It may seem as if we are over evaluating; however, this helps to ensure our services are effective.
Westat (2010) says the two reasons program evaluation exists, as written for the National Science Foundation, is to “improve a project” and “document what has been achieved” (p. 3).
The most consistent with my interest is program improvement. For instance, we had four different in-service courses with the same course information. An evaluation was passed out to the students at the end of the course to provide their opinion of the course. The comments prompted the instructors to redesign four courses into one. Evaluations are essential tool in Corrections because it allows us to
document our achievements, which will result in data to support our reentry programs.

In my work with community corrections, I have not conducted any type of program evaluation; however, I understand program evaluation is designed to answer some key questions about a program’s effectiveness to the stakeholders (community, participants and staff). The overarching idea behind program evaluation is to ascertain if those who should benefit from the program are actually benefiting and if those performing the services to the community are skilled at providing the services. Another important aspect of program evaluation is to determine whether the allocated resources for the services are sufficient for addressing the needs of the population (The Program Manager’s Guide to Evaluation, 2010).
In looking at this week’s resources, Langbein (2012) identifies some distinct differences between program and project (p.3). A program is described as “ongoing services or activities” (Langbein, 2012, p. 3) while projects are intended to be one-time activities that has long-lasting sustainable impact on communities (p. 3). Thus, program evaluations should help determine the extent of a program’s success or lack thereof (what works and what does not work) as well as provide insight on navigating areas where unexpected circumstances occur (Westat, 2010). In short, program evaluations provide managers and administrators the data needed to prove or disprove the value of a program which ultimately impac.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. Health care needs of returning military and their families Deployment, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), balancing family with long work hours are all part of an everyday military life. Mental, physical and social changes occur on a daily basis, affecting the health care needs of our military. However, events and issues like these can affect veterans and their families throughout their lives, even though they deserve the best, veterans can be neglected. From personal experience, military life is unique. A community within a community, fighting for our nation’s best interest. This paper reflects how we as nurses can be the best advocate for them. Health Care Needs Looking at health needs of veterans and their families, they can be physical, psychological or psychosocial. Physical includes combat injury which links closely with psychological concerns including PTSD and substance abuse: drugs and alcohol (
- 2. Spelman , Hunt, Seal & Burgo -Black, 2012). Psychosocial effects the family directly, including marital, financial instability and social isolation. Together all these have a significant impact on the everyday life, and the reorientation from deployments and adjustment back into the community ( Spelman et al ., 2012). Nurse Advocate for Military Nurses are in the frontline of health care. Therefore, nurses are in the critical position to speak out and be the best advocate for our clients (Laureate, 2012). However, providing safe and high-quality health care is a collaboration effort, working in unity with other health care professionals and administrators ( Milstead , 2016). The American Nurses Association (ANA) operates in unison with the Veterans Health Administration and the Department of Defense as advocates to improve veterans’ health care needs. Another valuable advocacy agency is Mental Health America; with over 200 associates in 41 States, they provide both current and former military with information to prevent the stigma related to mental health issues like PTSD and addiction, assisting in the reintegrating into family life (Mental Health America, 2016). With nurses working in unison with organizations like these, promotes success for implementing and changing public health policy. Development of Advocacy Skills According to K. Tomajan , author of Advocating for Nurses and Nursing, all nurses are
- 3. capable and have the opportunity to make an invaluable impact on their profession (2012). By being an advocacy for their profession and their clients they can improve care, making positive changes for the future of health care ( Tomajan , 2012). By using education, evidence-based knowledge and working in unison with other health care professionals and administrators, we can build a healthcare system with the patient at the center. Although advocacy starts in nursing school, it does not stop there with the filing away the information but continues to grow in all aspects of the profession throughout the nurses life ( Begley , 2010). Another way of developing advocacy skills is by joining and being actively involved in organizations like the ANA or the National Association of School Nurses. These both provide advocacy skills, webinars , conferences and connections to other like-minded people, promoting, supporting and changing the health care for our future. Nurse Advocate Responsibility From Florence Nightingale to present day, it has been the nurse’s responsibility to be an advocate; initially for their patients but now also for the developing healthcare ( Begley , 2010). Today nurse are encouraged to have a questioning attitude, work in collaboration with other health care professionals and be the voice of health care to ensure the safety of the patient ( Begley , 2010). Also, the professional Code of Ethics for Nurses gives
- 4. nurses a sets standard of care to work within, having sound knowledge and a responsibility to do what is in the client’s best interests ( Begley , 2010). When applying accountability and nurse advocacy to practice, nurses need to speak out and be the voice of their clients. In the case of the veterans, an example can be observing, implementing and evaluating a program to assist in the adjustment for school age children to deployed family members, and monitoring the reintegration into family life. Also, military spouses play a vital role in the rehabilitation of veterans after deployment. By working together, implementing a rehabilitation team, we can assist spouses to adapt and understand behavior, reuniting the family as a unit, providing a healthier and better outcome in their life. Conclusion Throughout history, nurses have always been at the forefront of health care delivery. Today nurses remain at the center of healthcare , and it is essential that nurses continue to grow to shape our future. So by working in collaboration with other health care professionals and administrators, advocating for the best interests of our patients using evidence-based research, we can provide the best health care for our clients, military and non- military.
