The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

1. On the date indicated in “area de descargas”, the registration period for
the Spanish placement test (SIGMA) will be opened. The student must have
“usuario” and password (if you are a student this will be the same one as you
have used on the “Application Form”, given to you by the UAM). It is very

online registration see:
https://secretaria-virtual.uam.es/Navegacion/InicioAlumno_mat_idiomas.html
2. If you are a member of the UAM community and you do not have a
“password” for the SIGMA application, you should come to the Secretary´s
office of the Servicio de Idiomas with a copy of your contract or grant in order
to obtain the password. This should be done at least five days before the end
of the registration period for the placement test.
3. For the online enrolment you must use the same “usuario” and password
used for the online registration for the placement test. The online enrolment is
done through the SIGMA application program from 9:30 to 13:30 on the
established days (see “area de descargas”). Outside the enrolment period,
the application program will not be available. A computer room with staff
from the Servicio de Idiomas will be available for students who need help with
the enrolment (see “area de descargas”). For the online enrolment see:
https://secretaria-virtual.uam.es/Navegacion/InicioAlumno_mat_idiomas.html

Livemocha
http://livemocha.com/
35 languages, free online learning, and a worldwide community
of native-speaking language learners just like you. Join for free
today.
Language as a Performing Art
We believe that language is not just an academic subject but
also a performing art – something that must be actively
practiced in order to master. A learner can watch people speak
a new language, memorize all of the grammar rules, and talk
about the language ad nauseam. But to truly speak a language,
a learner must actually try it out with a partner. Real
conversational fluency takes good instruction, a dose of
courage, and a lot of real-life practice.
Activity Sets: A Basic Building Block
Livemocha’s learning materials are all made up of Activity
Sets. The building blocks of each course framework, one Activity
Set represents a single Whole-Part-Whole deconstruction of a
concept or scenario. Activity Sets can be combined into
Sequences that, when completed, allow the learner to do a
specific task. Sequences are then combined into Courses, which
deliver a specific learning outcome tied to the proficiency level
a learner will achieve upon completion – for example, English
Mastery for Business. Each Course is created to meet the needs
of a particular Persona – the target learner for the Course, who
has an assumed set of competencies including knowledge, age,
skills, etc.

Learn Spanish and have fun.
Learning a language is not just a question of studying.
Anything is useful to increase our proficiency in another
language: on the street looking at advertising boards, in
bars, "eavesdropping" on customers, watching TV
programs of interest to you or listening to the music of
your famous Hispanic singers (with the lyrics to hand)...
But if you are alone and have a few minutes spare
and you want to practice your Spanish but you aren't in
Spain, take our vocabulary challenge!
We've got two different types of challenge for you to
enjoy while learning: Wordsearch, where you have to
find the key words among random letters; and
Hangman, where you have to finish the hidden word
before it's too late! Good luck!
