Someof the highlighted lyrics gave me ideas.Thelyrics are quite dark, which is strange for a
EDM(electronic dancemusic) track. Becauseof this I thought aplay on colour would be a
great way to portray narrative in the video.
Thevideo shows agirl who is severely depressed. Somuch so, shefeels her life is colourless.
Thevideo would be shot in black and white with flasheson the screenof the things that
have happened in her life (cyber bullying, home life etc.) However, whilst on her travels she
seeswhat shehasnot seenor felt in along time. Colour. Sheapproachesit only to find
another signal flare. Shecontinues to follow the colour. Thefurther shetravels the more
colour comesbackinto the frame. At this point the Middle 8 of the songwill commence
with afizz. Thisis where we would cut to shots of the character all dressed in white in a
black room. Thelyrics ‘im not alone, you’ll be watching over us’ play and acolourful hand
appearson her chest. Signifying sheis not alone in her depression. More handsfill her plain
clothes until the final chorus kicks in. Thisis where colour will literally be thrown at the
character. Theshots will be full colour, vibrant andhappy.
Themessageof the song is that no matter how dark you may feel your life is, there is always
alight, in this caseacolour - at the end of the tunnel.
Song:Porter Robinson& Madeon –Shelter
My initialideas…
Lyrics:
I could never find the right way to tell you
have you noticed I’ve beengone?
cause I left behind the home that you made me
but I will carry it along
mm it's along wayforward
so trust inme
I’ll give them shelter like you've done for me
and I know I’m notalone
you'll be watching overus
until you'regone
when I’m older I’ll be silent beside you
I know that words are not enough
and they won't need to know our names or our faces
but they will carry on for us

Music videoinspiration:
Flyleaf –All AroundMe
Thevideo starts in an all-white room asasthe songprogresses, the walls begin to drip with
paint. Layersand layers overlap creating avivid on screenexperience. Theedit cuts to and
from paint covered band members and all white scenes. This plays with the concept of time
and continuity, which works in favour of the track.
Justin Bieber – Where are üNow
3
4
Thevideo usesthe technique of rotoscoping where eachframe is drawn over with graphic
content. I really like this concept asI found myself pausingevery frame to seethedifferent
hiding messagesthroughout the song. It gives the edit a stop motion feel and I believe this
would be agreat technique to usein our video. We could usethis to portray hidden
messagesthroughout the songto enhanceournarrative.
I think this would be agreat technique to use in or graphical content and could lead to many
very interestingshots.
a-ha–TakeOnMe
Stopmotion animation mixed with live action footage makethis video afeat in itself. ALove
story between two worlds. Being able to mix animation and live action would be great.
However, maybe rotoscoping would be more ideal forour music video asout track is EDM
(electronic dancemusic)

Duran Duran –Rio
Duran Duran have usedcolour to expressthe outright beauty of ‘Rio’ in this video. They
have almost turned ahuman into apainting/piece of art. This is more of an artistic take on
using colour in avideo. Wecould do this too. However, we could useit to portray a
narrative.
Coldplay – Hymn ForTheWeekend
This video playson culture. It is shot in the middle of ‘Holi’the Indian festival of colour. The
costumes and themes throughout alsoportray this. Thisis another example of how to use
colour in musicvideos.
5
6
Madeon –TheCity
In this video colour is used to portray happinessand friendship. However, it is in quite adark
tone asrocket launchers and grenadesare usedto explode colour. Thisis an example of
how tone canbe used to give avideo acertainfeel.
Paramore -Now
Thisvideo alsousescolour asweapons. However, it is in the opposite way. Anarmy of
colour battles and army of black and grey. Whenstruck the coloured army bleed life and

colour. Their aim is to bring asense of colour backto the lives of the army. Thisis avery
uplifting messageand makesfor agreat video from avery simpleconcept.
Bring Me TheHorizon – ShadowMoses
Thisvideo playswith flares asasignal. Thishelped me develop my ideasabout how colour
could lead someonebackto happiness.Thevideo alsousesastrange style of editingwhere
frames seem to conjoin and ripple. It givesthe shots avery ‘wavy’ feel. Thiswould be great
for an instrumental tracktoo.
Storyboards:

My storyboards for the first sceneof the music video. Theedit should cut on the beats of
the song. Theidea is to zoom on every beat until we get closeenough to her eyes.Thenher
eyesopen and we seethe rotoscoping that will be fireworks of some sort. Thisis aplay on
the narrative that the audience will realise by the end of the video.
This is the storyboard for the final scene.Theidea is that both the beginning and end canbe
looped into an infinite story. Todo this I would have to reverse the intro and edit it to the
beats of the music. Thestory board canbe flipped aswell togive another effect.
This is the storyboard for the Middle 8 of the song. This is where the lyrics get dark and talk
about not being alone. For this part I seehandsslowly appearing on our white character,
slowly bringing colour back into her life. Whenthe chorus hits powder paint will be thrown
all over her making her white clothes fully coloured. Thisis an artistic approach to the
narrative.

PropsResearch
Welistened to manysongs, and when we finally decided on the song‘Shelter’, everyone
had ideasof what we could use.Thesongis electronic music, sofrom that standpoint we
looked at manyother songs in the samegenre, saw what they’d done and took inspiration
from them. Wealso listened closely to the lyrics of the song to get agood narrative.
Thefirst thing we decided wasthat we wanted to have apowder paint scene, where
powder paint was getting thrown in slow motion around aroom and at the main character.
Welooked online for asafe powder paint and found aload being sold from running events
where they useit to throw it at people.
Webought 24 mixed selection to use, combined with shippingit is £22.75.
The
second
propwe
decided we wanted to useweresmoke bombsas
we thought thatthe main character could follow
them through the city to the scenewith the powder paint.
Overall the 10 assorted smoke bombscost£14.15.
11
12
Along with the SmokeBombsand Powder Paint we bought Dust Sheets,SafetyEquipment,
and multiple clothes for the main character to wear and change into when it gets messy.
Wealsothought about using lights asstrobes, paint cannonsand confetti in our piece but
decided afterwards we already had too much to try and do in the time frame we’d been set.

SonyFS7– Good camera for slow motion shots which would be good for the scene with
powder paint being thrown at the actor. Not good in low light which is a problem as we
would be filming in adark roomusing only Aspherics2 Spotlights.
CanonEOSC500– Goodfor slow motion and much better in low light than the SonyFS7.
Not availablein CLRfor the daywe would be needingit.
BlackmagicCinemaCamera4K– Not the best for slow motion asit only goesup to 30fps

Slow Motion
In my research I will be looking into the best Slow Motion camera I can get
from CLR and how to actually use them. From looking at CLR and getting
people’s opinions, I have two cameras which I will be comparing. On top of this
I will also research into what to film in slow motion for our project.
From CLR I picked the Black Magic Ursa 4k vs the Sony FS7 4K in order to
find out which one performs the best I looked at the specs from the brand
website.
Black Magic Ursa 4K
60 Frames Per Second in 4.6K
120 Frames Per Second in 1080HD
(Design, 2016)
Sony FS7 180 Frames Per Second in
1080HD
(Films, 2015)
15
16
16
From this I can see that the Sony FS7 shoots 180 fps in 1080 compared to the
60 less fps Black Magic. However, there is more factors to take into apart from
high frame rates. I will be looking at Youtube and forums to get advice on how
to use these cameras. Videos that I have watched:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aG54-WR-4yk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziQqeU7lTAI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo3AXf7SSqM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZnr43YxCAI
After watching these videos, I have come to conclusion that the Sony FS7 is the
better camera, it shoots in more frames per second then the Ursa. The sensor is
larger in the Sony FS7 which allows more light in and it Sony is easier to
upload footage to your computer.
I have noticed that most electro pop music has slow motion in their video, this
could be seen as the norm for this genre of music video. It is now rear to see any
music video without slow motion in it. It makes the music dramatic as it slows
down reality. The music video Blame made by Calvin Harris and John
Newman, a electro dance song. It is mostly shot at a high rate.

LOCATIONS
Locations we want to film are mainly abandoned aswe need a large space to film it in. Props
we will be using requires the location to be wide enough for us to create a colourful mess.
The choice of location also fits in with the theme and concept of our music video. Essentially
she feels alone and depressed, therefore our locations wed want it to be somewhere large
where there is no one around. We believed a good mixture of indoor and outdoor locations
would be good, mainly for the props aspaint powder would be used indoor and smokebombs
outdoor. Wewant our locations to alsolook dull asit will be the post production of the motion
graphics effects and the props which will bring out the colour in the music video.
We are hoping to film in room 212 as it
very spacious and large, and most
importantly has white walls. This will be
used for the beginning scene/intro of our
music video where the female cast would
be thrown paint powder on her face.
Most pop videos usually have a blank
white screen therefore; this is very
conventional to see.
Forests/Woods in London, open space but
surrounded by trees, cannot see industrial.
We wanted an open and private space like
the woods (the location of the wood we have
chosen is Oxley Wood in South London) as it
is open and quiet, therefore believe this is is
the best place for the smoke bombs since we
are unable to do it in a small or indoor place
due to health and safetyreasons.
The Greenwich Tunnel, this will be used to
film the walking scene of the cast. Other
walking scenes we would be using will be
filmed in Soho, Covent Garden early in the
morning when it is quiet. We are hoping to
use as much location as we can for small
cutaway scenes due to the fast and upbeat
music. The locations will be very similar aswe
do not want it to be crowded and contain a
simple pathway to walkin.
19
20
EDITING
EditingStyle:
Most of the music videos we have looked at have
very fast pace editing and are mainly focused on
the visuals. Even though our plan is to film using
paint powder and smoke bomb, a lot of post
production will be use to bring out the colour and
extra details as we will be filming some scene in
Black Magic Camera therefore, the colour quality
of the image will be dull. Justin Bieber’s video
where are you now is a good example of how we
want the paint to visually look on the face, this is
the paint that may be added on in post
production as we will hopefully have more
control in the movement and pace of the paint.
Tove Lo’s ‘Not on Drug’ video displays smoke
bombs which will be filmed however slowed
down through the editing process. Video
transitions for the music video will be
experimented with at first as is not decided upon
yet until we visually see how it appears. For our
with a dip to white transition before cutting to another shot. Also, we are thinking of camera
movement from tilting up to the sky to down on the singer would be a good way to transition to
another shot. Another option is using the props, again, Tove Lo’s music video uses a lot of smoke
bombs which fills in the whole composition of the shot then zooms back out to introduce another
scene in the music video. Using props as a transition is a good way to keep consistency and create a
house style in the music video as it allows the viewers to see familiarity through out the music video
without the need to repeat someshots but use it in a different way.
Overall, the editing will be heavily made up of motion graphics. The type of effects we will be using
are very visual to create a surreal, unrealistic dream like effect. The use of this to for the audience to
differentiate the lead singer’s dull reality to her colour dream. The motions we will be using to display
this is trap code form, mirroring, possibly green screening for the wing scene to represent freedom,
compositing, mirroring and motion tracking. in the post production process our main focus at the
end is too also focus on the grading, this is the main method we will be using as our narrative: the
viewers are expected to understand the difference of emotion the lead singer feels in the music
video and believe editing in different colour/tinting it is the best way to do so.

I have noticed that most electro pop music has slow motion in their video, this could be seen as the norm for this genre of music video. It is now rear to see any music video without slow motion in it. It makes the music dramatic as it slows down reality. The music video Blame made by Calvin Harris and John Newman, a electro dance song. It is mostly shot at a high rate. (CalvinHarrisVEVO, 2014) Bibliography Design, B. (2016) Blackmagic design: URSA. 19 LOCATIONS Locations we wantto film are mainly abandoned aswe need a large space to film it in. Props we will be using requires the location to be wide enough for us to create a colourful mess. The choice of location also fits in with the theme and concept of our music video. Essentially she feels alone and depressed, therefore our locations wed want it to be somewhere large where there is no one around. We believed a good mixture of indoor and outdoor locations would be good, mainly for the props aspaint powder would be used indoor and smokebombs outdoor. Wewant our locations to alsolook dull asit will be the post production of the motion graphics effects and the props which will bring out the colour in the music video. We are hoping to film in room 212 as it very spacious and large, and most importantly has white walls. This will be used for the beginning scene/intro of our music video where the female cast would be thrown paint powder on her face. Most pop videos usually have a blank white screen therefore; this is very conventional to see. Forests/Woods in London, open space but surrounded by trees, cannot see industrial. We wanted an open and private space like the woods (the location of the wood we have chosen is Oxley Wood in South London) as it is open and quiet, therefore believe this is is the best place for the smoke bombs since we are unable to do it in a small or indoor place due to health and safetyreasons. The Greenwich Tunnel, this will be used to film the walking scene of the cast. Other walking scenes we would be using will be filmed in Soho, Covent Garden early in the morning when it is quiet. We are hoping to use as much location as we can for small cutaway scenes due to the fast and upbeat music. The locations will be very similar aswe do not want it to be crowded and contain a simple pathway to walkin. 19

20 EDITING EditingStyle: Most of themusic videos we have looked at have very fast pace editing and are mainly focused on the visuals. Even though our plan is to film using paint powder and smoke bomb, a lot of post production will be use to bring out the colour and extra details as we will be filming some scene in Black Magic Camera therefore, the colour quality of the image will be dull. Justin Bieber’s video where are you now is a good example of how we want the paint to visually look on the face, this is the paint that may be added on in post production as we will hopefully have more control in the movement and pace of the paint. Tove Lo’s ‘Not on Drug’ video displays smoke bombs which will be filmed however slowed down through the editing process. Video transitions for the music video will be experimented with at first as is not decided upon yet until we visually see how it appears. For our with a dip to white transition before cutting to another shot. Also, we are thinking of camera movement from tilting up to the sky to down on the singer would be a good way to transition to another shot. Another option is using the props, again, Tove Lo’s music video uses a lot of smoke bombs which fills in the whole composition of the shot then zooms back out to introduce another scene in the music video. Using props as a transition is a good way to keep consistency and create a house style in the music video as it allows the viewers to see familiarity through out the music video without the need to repeat someshots but use it in a different way. Overall, the editing will be heavily made up of motion graphics. The type of effects we will be using are very visual to create a surreal, unrealistic dream like effect. The use of this to for the audience to differentiate the lead singer’s dull reality to her colour dream. The motions we will be using to display this is trap code form, mirroring, possibly green screening for the wing scene to represent freedom, compositing, mirroring and motion tracking. in the post production process our main focus at the end is too also focus on the grading, this is the main method we will be using as our narrative: the viewers are expected to understand the difference of emotion the lead singer feels in the music video and believe editing in different colour/tinting it is the best way to do so. 20
