Place Studies Research Essay
Currently, there are many instances of social crisis taking place throughout the country. And many of
these instances can be traced to a certain, specific location. In the cases where we can geographically
pinpoint a social crisis, the place or space where it takes place often plays a specific, crucial role in the
crisis itself.
For this essay, you are to select a social problem or crisis that is central to a specific place or space. Using
research, write a 5-6 page essay unearthing and arguing how the place or space is the “silent character”
in the problem or crisis.
Examples of social crisis*:
• Hate crimes
• Tainted or limited resources
• Poverty
• Pollution
• Population booms or declines
• Substance abuse
• Homelessness
• Limitation of human rights
THIS ASSIGNMENT REQUIRES:
• Implemented research on a social issue/crisis, as well as on its central location
o Must include citations from at least one book, two peer-reviewed articles, and two reliable website

Be sure to describe any specific, physical features of the built environment that were directly related to the ability of people to survive the fire, and any specific cultural features that had similar impact.
5. Would a similar structure built today potentially suffer the same fate? Did the fire lead to any changes in either physical or cultural features in buildings built afterwards? Are you safer in buildings now (give specific reasons).

Final Project / Paper (320 points)
• For the final project each student is required to write a 3,000 – 5,000 word final paper that
addresses a contemporary controversy related to gender. This is an argumentative paper where
students are expected to take a stance on a particular issue and find textual support to make their
case. In order to complete this assignment, students must first find some kind of rhetorical artifact,
social movement, communication process, or individual they find particularly interesting. Once a
text or case study is chosen, students should embark on a scholarly research project. In order to
make an argument, it is vital to have textual support. A minimum of EIGHT (8) outside ACADEMIC
sources about their particular research project are required. Remember, this is a minimum—to write
the best paper it is vital to have a healthy amount of support to help argue the paper’s thesis
statement. Students are encouraged to be creative and devise the type of study that fits their interests
and academic background. Here are a few different types of papers that can be written. Please note
that students are not limited to these types of paper options. If there is another type of paper you
would like to write, please feel free to pitch the idea to me in advance or within the final paper
abstract:
1. Close textual analysis of how gender is communicated within a rhetorical artifact (i.e., you
may take an advertisement, film, or song and conduct a close textual analysis of its
underlying components. For example, let’s say you’re interested in the objectification of

Assignment: Each student in this class will be responsible for completing a current event analysis paper. This means that you will be analyzing a current event and its connection a World War II event. This paper will be a minimum four (4) to five (5) typed pages with double-spaced, Times New Roman font, and one inch margins on all sides of the paper.
Source: Each paper will include a careful analysis of a current event topic from a major news source. The source can be an internet source, but cannot be a blog or unpublished source. Research Paper Options and Guidelines
For the individual final paper, students can choose one of the following four options (A, B, C, and D).
All papers should be a minimum of (6) typed pages and a maximum of (10) pages.
In addition to your 6-10 pages,

Option A:
The purpose of this final paper is to enhance your knowledge and understanding of normal development during adolescence or adulthood. You should select a developmental task (or tasks) appropriate for either adolescence or adulthood.
For example, the development of an identity is a task that typically occurs during adolescence in Erickson’s theory of psychosocial development. You should review the literature related to this developmental task and write a comprehensive literature review that addresses not only the traditional views and theoretical explanations for this task, but also explores non-traditional explanations as well. For example, if you choose the issue of spousal abuse, you must address the traditional views outlined in the literature which define the cause and role of battering in interpersonal relationships including the alternative view of some theorists that violence in relationships can be viewed as acceptable behavior.
In so doing, you must identify the value systems underlying both traditional and alternative views on the issues. Your literature review may focus on normal development in adolescence or adulthood, or abnormal development.
Illustrating your literature with case examples, either from your field experiences or the literature is required.
For example, you may focus on abnormal development in adolescence, providing a case example of how teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, or depression may derail the normal development process.
Additionally, each student will be responsible for interviewing a MSW faculty member who has experience with your topic to learn how the individual applies and integrates knowledge and values relating to human behavior and the social environment in their practice with clients with your selected developmental task.

Non-indigenous environmental activists are recognizing the rightful place of First Nations at the forefront of environmental fights. As activist Dave Ages (Unist'ot'en Camp) has said, expressing why non-indigenous activists are rallying behind First Nations leadership, these environmental fights are happening in First Nations territories, but their fights are all of our fights (2014). While perhaps these allegiances were in the past partially instrumental, there is now a deep intertwining of First Nations' indigenous rights struggles and environmental fights in BC. This is partially due the decades of intimate sharing of struggle and growing incorporation of indigenous rights within the environmentalist agendas. It is also at least as much due to learned strategies of First Nations leaders for maintaining their leadership of these collaborations by requiring participating NGOs and individual activists to commit to indigenous leadership as a precondition for participation (Frost, 2018). These strategies are exemplified by Unist'ot'en Camp (Huson & Toghestiy (Wet'suwet'en), 2014), the Lelu Island occupation (Brown, (Tsim-shian), 2016), the Burnaby Mountain WatchHouse in southern BC (George, (Tsleil-waututh), 2018) as well as the stance held by the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition in relationship to their collaboration with various Gitxsan houses (McPhail, 2015). Progress has been made in both attitudes of environmentalists toward First Nations and institutional structures for indigenous leadership, but there still exist tensions in many instances between some environmentalists' and First Nations' objectives. These protocols of sovereignty recognition serve to both structurally maintain First Nations leadership and educate environmentalists on environmental justice and indigenous rights.

In this essay you will build on the skills that you have developed over the semester to construct a synthesized analysis in which you will examine a thematic element of Julia Alvarez’s novel How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents in conversation with two Globalization essays that share the same theme, allowing you the opportunity to draw more complex connections and to gain greater understanding of topics discussed since our course began. This means that you will be analyzing a current event and its connection a World War II event. Source: Each paper will include a careful analysis of a current event topic from a major news source. The source can be an internet source, but cannot be a blog or unpublished source. 1) Challenge arguments of historical inevitability by giving examples of how different choices could have led to different consequences. Explain in your paper how an event in WWII could have affected history drastically had in occurred in a different manner. Then connect this concept with an event in contemporary times and explain how different choices in modern society and lead to different possible consequences. (For example, explain how FDR’s decision to intern Japanese-Americans could have affected WW2 and then tie George W. Bush’s decision to support the Patriot Act could have affected the modern-day United States.)
2) Analyze proposed solution to current issues from the perspectives of diverse cultural groups. Choose a WWII event that identifies a particular dilemma/issue of the WWII era and examine how different groups may have viewed the issue (e.g. Jewish relocation/concentration in Germany, the U.S. military draft in WWII, the rationing of food in wartime America, etc…) Similarly, take any current issue in the public eye (e.g. healthcare, war, abortion, welfare, etc...) and tie how this topic is viewed by contemporary cultures. Research Paper Options and Guidelines
For the individual final paper, students can choose one of the following four options (A, B, C, and D).
All papers should be a minimum of (6) typed pages and a maximum of (10) pages.
In addition to your 6-10 pages,
please include a title page, a table of contents, and reference pages.
At least 2/3 of the references should have been published within the last 5 years.
Papers should be in APA format, double-spaced using Times New Roman, size 12 for the font.
Option A:
The purpose of this final paper is to enhance your knowledge and understanding of normal development during adolescence or adulthood. You should select a developmental task (or tasks) appropriate for either adolescence or adulthood.
For example, the development of an identity is a task that typically occurs during adolescence in Erickson’s theory of psychosocial development. You should review the literature related to this developmental task and write a comprehensive literature review that addresses not only the traditional views and theoretical explanations for this task, but also explores non-traditional explanations as well. For example, if you choose the issue of spousal abuse, you must address the traditional views outlined in the literature which define the cause and role of battering in interpersonal relationships including the alternative view of some theorists that violence in relationships can be viewed as acceptable behavior.
In so doing, you must identify the value systems underlying both traditional and alternative views on the issues. Your literature review may focus on normal development in adolescence or adulthood, or abnormal development.
Illustrating your literature with case examples, either from your field experiences or the literature is required.
For example, you may focus on abnormal development in adolescence, providing a case example of how teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, or depression may derail the normal development process.
Additionally, each student will be responsible for interviewing a MSW faculty member who has experience with your topic to learn how the individual applies and integrates knowledge and values relating to human behavior and the social environment in their practice with clients with your selected developmental task.
The student must also discuss the implications of the research for social work practice and social policy. (See Objectives 1, 7, 8, 11, 12).
If you should use a work experience or field experience, please protect the identity of all individuals involved by changing the names, dates, and locales to protect the innocent persons involved.

Expectations of Academic Writing
· It is formal.
· It has accurate grammar and vocabulary. It uses complete sentences.
· It is not usually a 5 paragraph essay!
· It follows all of the rules of formatting, such as margins, font, indented paragraphs, and page numbers.
· It does not require long, complicated sentences.
· It demonstrates your level as a scholar.
· It includes a lot of citations and references.
· It requires your own voice and your own thinking.
· It presents your argument directly and provides clear evidence.
· Different kinds of essays (genres) have different expectations.
· Different kinds of essays require different cognitive tasks.
· Each discipline has its own style and expectations.
What to avoid:
First person (I/me/my) unless you are writing a personal response.
Second person (you/your)
Contractions (don’t/can’t/won’t, he’s, they’re…)
Slang and informal expressions
Passive voice (“The problem was started by activists.”)

Non-indigenous environmental activists are recognizing the rightful place of First Nations at the forefront of environmental fights. As activist Dave Ages (Unist'ot'en Camp) has said, expressing why non-indigenous activists are rallying behind First Nations leadership, these environmental fights are happening in First Nations territories, but their fights are all of our fights (2014). While perhaps these allegiances were in the past partially instrumental, there is now a deep intertwining of First Nations' indigenous rights struggles and environmental fights in BC. This is partially due the decades of intimate sharing of struggle and growing incorporation of indigenous rights within the environmentalist agendas. It is also at least as much due to learned strategies of First Nations leaders for maintaining their leadership of these collaborations by requiring participating NGOs and individual activists to commit to indigenous leadership as a precondition for participation (Frost, 2018). These strategies are exemplified by Unist'ot'en Camp (Huson & Toghestiy (Wet'suwet'en), 2014), the Lelu Island occupation (Brown, (Tsim-shian), 2016), the Burnaby Mountain WatchHouse in southern BC (George, (Tsleil-waututh), 2018) as well as the stance held by the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition in relationship to their collaboration with various Gitxsan houses (McPhail, 2015). Progress has been made in both attitudes of environmentalists toward First Nations and institutional structures for indigenous leadership, but there still exist tensions in many instances between some environmentalists' and First Nations' objectives. These protocols of sovereignty recognition serve to both structurally maintain First Nations leadership and educate environmentalists on environmental justice and indigenous rights.

PAPER 3: ARGUMENTATIVE THEME SYNTHESIS
PURPOSE:
In this essay you will build on the skills that you have developed over the semester to construct a synthesized analysis in which you will examine a thematic element of Julia Alvarez’s novel How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents in conversation with two Globalization essays that share the same theme, allowing you the opportunity to draw more complex connections and to gain greater understanding of topics discussed since our course began. Your final version of Paper 3 will also serve as the capstone assignment of your final portfolio—I will distribute the portfolio assignment to you shortly.
TASKS:
For this assignment, you are to write a paper of 1100-1300 words in which you argue for a claim based on the Garcia Girls in light oftwo thematically similar essays from your Globalization reader. Garcia Girls is your primary source (the focus text under analysis); because the claim is centered on this text, it should receive the most attention (and analysis) in your paper. Your two selected Globalization essays will then serve as secondary sources, helping to add dimension to your argument by providing you with either: meaningful anecdotes and experiences, theoretical frameworks, terminology, historical or scientific facts and data, and/or alternate points of view. The essays should help you to view the novel in a unique way, just as the novel will help to add human faces to many of the complex psychological (and cultural) processes we have discussed since September. The meaning that you glean from placing the 3 texts in conversation with each other will be evident through your analyses.

1. a 5-part intro that you used for Paper 2 (hook > common ground > problem statement > “so what?” response > claim), but with the inclusion of a Glob. essay before your problem statement.

For this essay, your task is to propose a realistic, thoughtful solution to a problem that affects you or someone you know.
This could be a large scale problem (such as profound national frustration with our electoral system) or a smaller scale
problem (such as a general lack of exciting social life for students who live on campus). While you might need to provide
some “proof ” that your problem is really a problem, the bulk of your argument should aim to convince your reader that your solution is
a very good option for all parties involved.
As you begin drafting in class, your goal should be to produce 2-4 pages of thoughtful prose that:
• briefly introduces your chosen problem and the stakes (why the problem needs to be addressed)
• proposes a realistic and fair minded solution (it could actually work, and people would likely accept it)
• develops 1-3 supporting points for your argument (research sources optional for the first draft)
• pays close attention to the basic features as outlined in SMG
Feel free to use the following template for effective structure:
• an intro paragraph that describes your problem and solution and gives your reader a reason to care
• 1-3 body paragraphs that develop individual points of support
• a brief conclusion that wraps up your argument
First draft requirements:
• To receive full credit for this portion of essay #1, your in-class draft must be at least one full page.
• Our purpose is not to produce final draft quality writing at this phase. Just start by getting your ideas on paper, for
now.
Subsequent Drafts:
Now that you have a basic argument on paper, continue to develop and focus your argument. Feel free to bring this draft
to office hours. Be sure to improve your draft prior to the peer review workshop, to help you produce a solid final draft.
Peer Review Requirements:
Bring three copies for peer-review. This draft should preferably be a full draft, but must be at least 3-4 pages. If you’re
short of 4-5 full pages, include a well-developed outline for the rest of your argument.
Final Draft Requirements:
• 4-5 pages of cleanly written, well-organized, lucid, insightful prose
• 2-4 scholarly or credible sources, with ALL borrowed words and information appropriately cited.

• Most any problem you choose can provide options for effective use of research, though you might need to be

for major potential objections, rather than ignoring them or hoping your reader won’t notice (for instance, if you

Develop a classroom or community center/plot of land floorplan where there is intentionality behind every inch of the space. Label each area with its purpose and what area of development it is meant to foster. Be specific, go beyond saying, "Cognitive, Social-emotional, Language, or Physical development". You should have a minimum of 4 pages:
1. A cover page (1 points) where you list your name, student ID, dat, "HW3" and then tell me about the space you are designing and for what age group and population.
· Ages can range from 4 year old's to 18 year old's
· Populations can range from a low-income classroom in an urban, suburban, or rural area to a targeted population (e.g., LGBTQIA+, sexual assault survivors, individuals with learning differences, undocumented youth, etc.)
· Overarching goal of the space you are creating
2. The visual (3 points) representation of the space you created with each area labeled
· You can do this with colored pencils and paper (take a picture or scan it) or on your ipad/tablets and computers using any software/program available to you.
· You can label using letters or numbers or short label names/descriptors

· Finally, how is it serving a buffer or protective factor for children and adolescents at risk

*** You do not need to be an artistic genius to do well on this assignment. It is most important to demonstrate your intentionality in curating spaces for children and adolescents at-risk. Importantly, it needs to be clear that you thought through different processes that impact development.
