Research Design Proposal
Introduction
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among veterans of the US armed forces
has become a major issue in today’s wars. Some researchers are even calling this disorder
an epidemic because it has affected so many of our soldiers.
Topic
This research paper will explain what PTSD is and how soldiers develop this
devastating disorder based on the available information from today’s research. Then, the
ways that PTSD is treated will be discussed.
What I Know/ Why I Am Interested
I became interested in this topic when it was brought up in the fishbowl discussions
that we had in class. The fishbowl discussions were great for hearing about the cases of
PTSD in other people’s books. However, my book did not have too much about PTSD,
and I wanted to learn more. What I have learned is that PTSD is a major problem for the
US armed forces. I also learned that researchers are trying many different things to try
and cure PTSD. Another thing that I have discovered is that the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan have produced more cases of PTSD than other wars. Many aspects of the
way these wars have been fought may have caused PTSD. Many of the troops are being
deployed multiple times, IEDs and other explosives have traumatized soldiers, and other

things may lead to the development of PTSD. To further hurt the situation, many army
bases do not have enough medical staff members to effectively deal with this problem.
As a result, many of these soldiers are being sent home or back into the battlefield
without being properly treated.
What I Hope to Learn
During this research, I hope to learn about several things. The first thing that I hope to
learn is what kind of treatments are available to soldiers with PTSD. I found one or two
articles discussing treatment, but none of them discussed the latest treatments available. I
would like to go more into more depth about how the current treatments work, and how
effective the treatments actually are. I would also like to learn more about what
specifically causes PTSD. Hopefully, I can find sources that show what types of events
cause PTSD, and why these events can traumatize soldiers for the years to come.
Initial Questions
1. What causes PTSD?
2. What treatments are currently available to soldiers?
3. How much research is being done to find a cure?
4. Who is doing the research?
5. How does PTSD affect the soldiers’ civilian and military life?
6. Can PTSD be prevented?
7. What is alternative treatment for PTSD?
8. Does alternative treatment work?
9. What has the US Army/ Veterans’ Administration done to help soldiers?
10. How effective are the current treatments for PTSD?
3. Miles 3
Three Major Questions
1. How do soldiers develop PTSD?
2. Why is this condition so difficult to treat?
3. What is being done to cure soldiers with PTSD?
My Research Plan
The most important material to me is the various databases, such as Galileo, Gale,
etc. These databases provide reliable, academic articles that have been very beneficial to
me up to this point. For now, my method for organizing my sources is through a
document with links in it. I have considered using Scoop.it, and as I obtain more sources,
I will probably use it. The citation method that I am using is Easy Bib. I really like how
easy it is to cite sources using the website. For this project, I am working alone; therefore,
there should not be any problems with communication, compiling the essay into one
document, or other problems that result from working with a partner/group. I plan to have
my first four sources for my project by April 13th, along with the notecards that
correspond with those sources. Then, by April 19th, I plan to have a minimum of 8
sources, if not more. I should also have all the notecards that I need by that time. I would
like to have the first notecard check on April 13th, so that I can know that I am using the
correct format. For the second notecard check, April 18th.
Content Creation Tools
I plan to use google docs to for my project. This should be the only tool because my
project is going to be a traditional paper. Also, I will be able to share my paper with Mrs.
Lester or Mrs. Hamilton if necessary.

Final Learning Product
I plan to use a shaping sheet for this project. I like the shaping sheet because
everything is laid out in an easy to see format. This is also the method that I am most
familiar with.
