Exploring the Sweet Spot: Geolocation, Health, and Gov-data
Location based services are increasingly important, especially when it comes to accessing health information and services. Over the past year and a half, AIDS.gov, a program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of HIV/AIDS Policy, has been collaborating with other Federal agencies (CDC, HUD, SAMHSA, among others) to develop an HIV/AIDS prevention and service locator. This new tool combines key Federal HIV/AIDS programs such as HIV testing, mental health services, health centers, substance abuse clinics, and housing services. Each of these programs is run by a separate agency and pulls information from a wide range of sources. Beyond addressing what it took to get each agency to collaborate and push their data in a consumable format, this presentation will focus on the steps AIDS.gov took to create this locator service. We take a technical approach to discuss the GeoRSS standard, how we built the service using mostly JavaScript, and how we pushed this service to mobile, standard web, and native application platforms. We will also talk about the iterative design and development process, and we tie it all together with the big ticket: the sweet spot of location, mobile, and health. We cover it all, location, Health IT, and Gov 2.0.

One forward-thinking school – College of Engineering at University of Notre Dame – has set the ball rolling by implementing a large hub and spoke infrastructure to manage the content of a dozen departments and a dozen research centers. The new structure was unveiled in January 2012 and is powered by Plone.
In this talk, we will unveil how the Plone add-on Lineage can be used to create a powerful structure of parent and child sites. First, we will explain how Lineage works out of the box with no customizations. The default behavior is simple and allows for the new microsites to be created instantly, but they will look the same as their parent.
After reviewing the stock behavior, we will explore how to extend Lineage. There are several Lineage add-ons that allow child sites to have their own theme or even their own properties. We will present what these add-ons provide on top of the out-of-the box experience. We will also reveal how to use the child site creation hooks to populate the new child sites with content, set up properties and prepare the child site for use by the end users.

This hands on session will give guide help you assemble your own toolbox with the the different (mostly free) tools available for analyzing and troubleshooting web performance. You'll learn what you can expect from high level tools that measure page load time through synthetic or real user monitoring, down to low level javascript profiling and graphic rendering. We'll dive straight into the advanced parts of WebPagetest, Chrome Dev Tools, Dynatrace Ajax Edition and others, and you'll also get to know how to do most of this on actual mobile devices.

For the last 7 years I’ve been focused outwardly on exploring Kafka application development challenges, but recently I decided to look inward and see what I could discover about the performance, scalability and resource characteristics of the Kafka clusters themselves. Using a suite of Performance Engineering techniques, I will reveal some surprising discoveries about cosmic Kafka mysteries in our data centres, related to: cluster sizes and distribution (using Zipf’s Law), horizontal vs. vertical scalability, and predicting Kafka performance using metrics, modelling and regression techniques. These insights are relevant to Kafka developers and operators.
