This workshop will walk participants through the course design and development process, with an emphasis on blended-learning curriculum for Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) contexts. Highlighting the work of L. Dee Fink (2003) in the area of Significant Learning Experiences, we will explore the different types of learning in Fink’s Taxonomy (foundational knowledge, application, integration, human dimension, caring and learning how to learn) while familiarising ourselves with his course design framework. Participants will be challenged to consider how each phase of this framework can inform and influence their own course design decisions, specifically the creation, adoption or adaptation of materials and methods to promote the acquisition of a new language as well as broader 21st century skills. Using examples of courses recently developed for a content-based English language program for university students in Japan, the presenter will discuss how Fink’s concepts of backward design (what’s important now and years after the course, and what should students do in the course to succeed?) and forward assessment (imagining students in a situation where they would use the knowledge/skills, and focusing the learning on realistic meaningful tasks) have helped in both revamping existing courses and developing new ones. Participants will go away with several job aids to assist them in their own curriculum, course and lesson planning endeavours.

ABSTRACT: The Purpose Of This Study Was To Determine And Compare The Effectiveness Of Cooperative Strategy To Teaching And Traditional Lecture Strategy On Students’ Practical Skills Performance In Brick/Blocklaying And Concreting Trade In Science And Technical Colleges. The Design Used For The Study Was Quasi- Experimental, Non- Equivalent Group Design. Bricks/Blocklaying And Concreting Two (Ii) Students From Two Science And Technical Colleges In Adamawa State Formed The Population For The Study. The Total Population For The Study Was One Hundred And Eighty Six (186) Students. All The Students Were Used.The Population Was Divided In To Two Groups Government Science And Technical College; Numan Formed The Experimental Group While Mubi Formed The Control Group. Seven Topics Were Selected From The Bricks/Blocklaying And Concreting Ii Syllabus Of Nabteb Curriculum For The Treatment. Nabteb Students’ Practical Skills Performance Instrument For Testing Practical Skills Was Adapted For The Study. The Collected Data Were Analyzed Using Mean, And Z-Test. Two Research Questions Were Asked And Two Null Hypotheses Were Formulated And Tested At 0.05 Level Of Significance. Z-Test Was Used In Testing Hypotheses 1, 2. Hypotheses 1 Was Rejected While Hypotheses 2 Was Accepted. Cooperative Strategy Yielded The Highest PostTest Mean In The Skills Performance Test In Nabteb Practical Skills Performance Test Instrument Than The Traditional Lecture Strategy. There Was No Gender Influence On The Cooperative Strategy. The Researcher Recommended The Use Of The Cooperative Strategy For Teaching Practical Lessons In Science And Technical Colleges Because The Strategy Shows More Effects In Teaching Practical Skills In Brick/ Blocklaying And Concreting Practical Skills Performance. The Researcher Also Determined The Influence Of Gender On The Strategy And Found That Gender Has No Influence On The Strategy. The Researcher Recommended That, There Should Be Training And Retraining Of The Teachers And Provision Of An Enabling Environment. The Study Also Revealed The Need For Student’s Full Participation In Teaching And Learning Process.

Student 1 Southwest’s strategy and process lies in making the most of what they have and using it efficiently. by only using one type of aircraft, it keeps training costs at bay because the mechanics don’t have to go to school to learn how to maintain a bunch of different aircraft. They also have many of their employees cross trained wherever possible which helps the company maximize the utilization of their work force. The company’s flights are also relatively short and they use a lot of what are referred to as secondary airports which keeps their operational costs down. Southwest is successful because they have taken logical steps to keep their costs down while giving the customer what they want— getting to their destination without paying a lot of money for it. Not only have they taken the steps necessary to keep going in a time when the airline industry wasn’t doing well but they have stuck to it. Tesla would do well to borrow from Southwest is its Human Resources philosophy. Tesla needs to make sure the people they hire have the proper experience and have the personality to work at Tesla for the job they are hired for. Tesla also needs to cross train their employees as much as they can except where safety standards prohibit it. They use a very smart and unique strategy which plays a major role in the airline’s success. According to Srinivasan (2014), Southwest Airlines began with one simple strategy, “If you get your passengers to their destinations when they want to get there, on time, at the lowest possible fares, and make darn sure they have a good time doing it, people will fly your airline” (para. 1). This strategy offers lower costs, higher efficiency, and more convenience as well. Other competitive advantages of the airline includes award winning customer service, human resource practices and work culture, and lower operational costs and higher operational efficiency (Srinivasan, 2014). The client company that I am using for my OIP is Nike Inc. I believe that it would be advisable for Nike Inc. to learn from Southwest Airline’s strategies and processes. Southwest vales customer satisfaction and uses strategies that not only benefit the compan.
