India gained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947 through the Indian Independence Act. The act partitioned British India into two new dominions, India and Pakistan. India became a constitutional monarchy but did not yet have a permanent constitution. A drafting committee was appointed with Ambedkar as chairman to draft a constitution. After two years of deliberations, 308 members signed copies of the constitution on January 24, 1950. The constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, marking the transition of India to a sovereign democratic republic.
