This document discusses the film Love Hate which is a modern Romeo and Juliet story set in Bradford about two lovers from different ethnicities and morals struggling against family and societal opposition. It provides insights into the working class people portrayed in the film, noting similarities and differences between working class Muslims and white families. Both groups are shown to work hard in low-paying jobs, hold intolerance for those of other races, and have patriarchal family structures. However, cultural and religious traditions are shown to have a stronger influence on the behaviors and freedoms of working class Muslim women and families.
1. Love
Hate A modern Romeo and Juliet set in Bradford where
two lovers of different ethnicities and morals struggle
to show their love for each other. Family is a problem
for both of their characters and they have to meet in
secret. When their secret is revealed they have to
make the choice of leaving together, with not much
behind them, or staying in their homes were racism
prevails over everything..
2. Insight into working class
people
- In the movie we see Yusif (an Asian man) and
Derek (a white man) working in a factory
together. Showing that two different people of
different races can get on when working.
- However, when multicultural relationships are
involved morals change and the two men get
protected over the women in their race.
- The younger girls in the film don’t feel like
anything is wrong, but the boys do. They try to be
the leaders of their family by showing aggression,
which just pushes the girls away more.
- Naseema’s father seems friendly and is a cab
driver, while Adam’s family is more angry. They
work in their own business.
- Naseema’s dad seems more wise over his son
who is hypocritical in his actions.
- The film shows how the children in the family
all work as well showing that they need the help
in the area they are from, showing that they aren’t
the richest of people.
3. Similarities
- Working class Muslims are in many ways the same as a
white working class person or family.
- They share the same strong regional accent, live in similar
houses in the same run down areas in the North of England
and have a traditional working class nuclear family (mother,
father, brother) etc.
- They work hard in what seems to be in stereotypical low
paid working class jobs Naseema’s brother works in a factory
and her Dad works as a taxi driver. Both working class
Muslims and white working class people seem to hold some
intolerance to each other, examples are when the Muslims
retaliated after Naseema’s father is beaten up by white
racists.
- Naseema’s brother seems very outgoing like a normal
working class male and seems to not be very religious like
many working class people aren’t. However following a
Asian stereotype he keeps his sister on a very short leash
even being threatening and violent if she does something he
does not approve of.
- This violent behaviour can also be seen in a traditional
working class outburst from Michelle’s father when she does
something he does not approve of. Working class men
whether they be white or Muslim do seem to hold a position
of power over women.
4. Differences
- Using Naseema as an example. She seems much more
shy and less outgoing than a normal working class
person such as Michelle and has not lost her virginity
unlike Michelle. Because of this you can see some
working class Muslims uphold a much stronger belief in
religious values.
5. More on Yusif and Naseema.
Working class Muslim families like Naseema’s are represented as people who come from the
backgrounds and cultures of where going out and socialising outside family is unusual. Just the
way her brother pushes her about emphasises this. He suspects her about her negative
approach to their customs and rituals shows us how
