This document analyzes the portrayal of working class characters and themes in several British soap operas, including EastEnders, Brookside, Coronation Street, and Hollyoaks. Key aspects highlighted include the use of working class dialects, run down businesses, dysfunctional families, unemployment, industrial decline, dominance of female characters, aspirations for social mobility, and stereotypical portrayals of working class lifestyles, families, and communities. While some soaps aimed to realistically reflect social issues of the time, others focused more on stereotypes and maintaining a working class background.
