Walls and Windows for Highly Insulated Buildings in the Pacific NorthwestRDH Building Science
Presentation Outline:
- Design Objectives, Durability Considerations, and the Pros & Cons for Alternate Highly Insulated Wall Assemblies in the Wet Pacific Northwest
- Basics of North American, European and Passivhaus Window Rating Standards and Window Selection Guidelines
Energy codes and standards require ever increasing thermal performance. This presentation looks at different ways to achieve higher insulation levels without compromising durability.
Ever increasing thermal performance requirements for wood-frame walls have had a dramatic impact on how we build walls. To meet these targets, exterior insulation is becoming more and more common, and methods to support the cladding are required that are strong and rigid, yet do not create significant thermal bridging through the insulation. This presentation discusses the results of recent structural testing of various different arrangements on long fasteners through exterior insulation as a method of supporting cladding while limiting thermal bridging.

Hence, our whole range of consignments is widely appreciated for high resistance against corrosion, dimensional accuracy, smooth finishing, rust-proof and durability. For this, our products are exclusively used in construction of buildings.
Using long screws directly through an exterior insulation layer to provide cladding attachment without the use of clips or girts has been shown to be a thermally and structurally efficient solution for more energy efficient wood-frame buildings. However, there is still significant scepticism regarding supporting cladding with only screws when using thicker exterior insulation (>38 mm or >1-1/2″), supporting heavy claddings (>48.8 kg/m² or >10 psf, e.g., stucco, stone veneer), or in particular, using exterior mineral wool insulation, which is perceived as insufficiently rigid in comparison to competing foam plastic insulations such as extruded polystyrene insulation (XPS).
Various studies have been conducted to address this gap in industry knowledge and familiarity to help promote adoption of this cladding attachment method. To build on this existing research, which focused on evaluation of screw bending and potential formation of a truss (created by the screw and compression of the insulation), this study focuses on the impact of the compressive strength of the insulation, large thicknesses of insulation (~305 mm or ~12″), and fastener embedment depth (framing member vs. sheathing only) on the structural performance of these systems. The impact of these parameters was evaluated in a laboratory condition using a custom-built apparatus to mechanically imitate cladding (gravity) load in an isolation from other factors such as various other forces building is subject to. The test specimens were selected so that the impact of these parameter can be evaluated by cross comparison. This study found that when 8.0 mm (5/16″) fasteners, fully embedded in to the structural framing, were subjected to common cladding load (9.1 kg or 25 lb per fastener) the deflection observed was typically less than 0.64 mm (0.025″), which is likely insignificant considering potential moisture shrinkage that could be anticipated in a typical one-storey wood-frame construction (10 mm or 3/8″).

This research aims to find the effect of perforation on the lateral stability of reinforced concrete frame
structure. Unreinforced brick masonry (URBM) infill construction is very common practice in Pakistan. (URBM) is
experimentally evaluated in this paper that how perforations in frame structures with masonry infill affect the lateral
strength and over all stability, which include; Strength, Stiffness, Ductility and Energy dissipation response factor. A
total of two full scale Reinforced concrete frames with unreinforced brick masonry infill has been constructed. QuasiStatic cyclic testing performed on each infill wall Reinforced concrete frame with unreinforced brick masonry to find its
strength and stiffness. Perforation in infill walls reduced lateral strength and stiffness of frame structures considerably.

A Memorandum of Association (MOA) is a legal document that outlines the fundamental principles and objectives upon which a company operates. It serves as the company's charter or constitution and defines the scope of its activities. Here's a detailed note on the MOA:
Contents of Memorandum of Association:
Name Clause: This clause states the name of the company, which should end with words like "Limited" or "Ltd." for a public limited company and "Private Limited" or "Pvt. Ltd." for a private limited company.

Registered Office Clause: It specifies the location where the company's registered office is situated. This office is where all official communications and notices are sent.
Objective Clause: This clause delineates the main objectives for which the company is formed. It's important to define these objectives clearly, as the company cannot undertake activities beyond those mentioned in this clause.

Liability Clause: It outlines the extent of liability of the company's members. In the case of companies limited by shares, the liability of members is limited to the amount unpaid on their shares. For companies limited by guarantee, members' liability is limited to the amount they undertake to contribute if the company is wound up.

Capital Clause: This clause specifies the authorized capital of the company, i.e., the maximum amount of share capital the company is authorized to issue. It also mentions the division of this capital into shares and their respective nominal value.
Association Clause: It simply states that the subscribers wish to form a company and agree to become members of it, in accordance with the terms of the MOA.
Importance of Memorandum of Association:
Legal Requirement: The MOA is a legal requirement for the formation of a company. It must be filed with the Registrar of Companies during the incorporation process.
Constitutional Document: It serves as the company's constitutional document, defining its scope, powers, and limitations.
Protection of Members: It protects the interests of the company's members by clearly defining the objectives and limiting their liability.
External Communication: It provides clarity to external parties, such as investors, creditors, and regulatory authorities, regarding the company's objectives and powers.

Binding Authority: The company and its members are bound by the provisions of the MOA. Any action taken beyond its scope may be considered ultra vires (beyond the powers) of the company and therefore void.
Amendment of MOA:
While the MOA lays down the company's fundamental principles, it is not entirely immutable. It can be amended, but only under specific circumstances and in compliance with legal procedures. Amendments typically require shareholder

Report: WA Earned 33 Per Cent Satisfactory Rate for Residential Metal Roof Construction
1. Report: WA Earned 33 Per
Cent Satisfactory Rate for
Residential Metal Roof
Construction
Timberfix
2. In 2014, the roofing sector in West Australia earned a 33 per cent satisfactory rating, based on construction.
This data is from the most recent inspection report of the WA Department of Commerce Building
Commission.
The inspection was conducted to assess the durability of residential roofs and their resilience to wind
damage. It also aimed to check if the roofs met the performance standards set by the National Construction
Code.
Study on Satisfactory Roof Construction
The inspection consisted of a 12-point assessment, where the inspector examined the following aspects of
the construction of 123 sheet metal clad timber frame roofs of houses in Perth and South West:
Tie-down corrosion
Tie-down installation
Timber roof batten within 1200mm of roof edges
Timber roof batten connection in general roof areas
Metal batten
Rafter connection to the top plate
Connections for the remainder of the roof
Collar Ties
Timber Truss
Timber roof beams
Steel roof beams
Other sundry areas
3. The results showed varying ratings for the 12 general inspection points. The lowest rating is in relation to
corrosion (11 per cent), while the highest rating is batten installation (63 per cent).
Low Satisfactory Rating
From the relatively low satisfactory rating (33 per cent), it can be argued that the overall performance of
sheet metal clad timber roofs in WA dwellings is not impressive. The Commission attributed poor
performance to the following issues:
Incorrect labelling of products
Unavailability of conforming products
Missing or improvised components
Ineffective quality control
Poor workmanship
Roof Construction Standard
For over 20 years, the Building Code of Australia (BCA) has been strictly requiring builders to construct roofs
in which timber and roof frames are firmly tied together and to the building structure. This can be done with
metal straps, propriety brackets, rods, bolts and appropriate screws. Compliance with the BCA can increase
the chances of roof resiliency, especially during strong winds and storms.
Based on discussions with roof manufacturers and builders, the Building Commission estimated that about
14,161 or about 60 per cent of houses in WA use sheet metal clad timber roofs in 2014. This can raise
concerns to thousands of home owners in WA. What can be done to ensure roof durability is regular
inspection, even during construction.
