According to a 2015 study on
emissions, conducted by the
Institute of Transport Economics in
Norway in collaboration with VTT
in Finland, new Euro 6 cars with
diesel engines are struggling to
meet NOx emissions under real
driving conditions.
The report reveals that Euro 6
type-approved private cars with
diesel engines have 4 to 20 times
higher NOx emissions in city traffic
and during cold weather
conditions than the type approval
limit of 0.08 g/km. Moreover, the
average measured emission of
NOx from Euro 6 private cars with
diesel engines was also about four
times higher than the average
emission from the tested city buses
and heavy vehicles with Euro VI
engines.
NOx is formed when nitrogen
and oxygen, present in the
atmosphere, react during high
temperature combustion.
Because of the temperature
and duration of the combustion
flame front, exhaust NOx from
diesel engines has always been
difficult to control.
While engineers continue to
develop new combustion
regimes to reduce engine-out
NOx, Exhaust Gas
AfterTreatment Systems
(EGATS) are still the primary
means of achieving satisfactory
emissions.
