Background Information
When studying the different religions of the world we tend of focus on the distinctions between these religions
and understanding what makes them unique, however it is important to note that although these religions are
distinct and unique in their own way, there are common themes and structures that can be applied to them.
Some of the common elements present in the different religions that we will be studying this semester are:
- Sacred Scriptures and Sacred Writings
o Divinely inspired writings that contain origins of the religion, essential beliefs, and major
teachings. Some religions also revere writings of prominent figures throughout their history
who have contributed to expounding the theology of the religion (ex: writings of the Jewish
saints)
- Beliefs and Practices
o Tenets of the religion that unify its community of believers on a variety of topics ranging
from their relationship with the divine, soteriology, creation, eschatology, anthropology, etc.
- Prayer and Worship
o Liturgical practices that believers of the faith participate in throughout their daily lives. Some
liturgical practices and rituals of prayer are performed in conjunction with the celebration of
religious festivals at particular times of the week (ex: Sabbath) or times of the year (ex:
Christmas)
- Morality – Code of Ethics
o Guiding principles that adherents of the faith abide by throughout their lives informed by the
theology of the religion
- History
o Understanding how the religion was established and the advances of the religion throughout
human history that shape the global image of the religion today while also recognizing
changes in theology that have occurred throughout history due to major historical events

Catalog Description
Ritual, symbol, and myth as types of religious expression, with examples selected from the literate
and nonliterate religions of the world.
Course Overview
This course explores some of the principle ways in which humans employ myth, ritual, and
symbols to articulate and express religious beliefs and practices. It analyzes the relationships
among these three modes of religious expression, and their relationships to other dimensions of
religion. We will examine these aspects of religion as they occur in a variety of religious
traditions, comparing and contrasting different ways in which religion is experienced. Discussion
of these concepts will emphasize the development of critical thinking skills.
This course broadens students' understanding of the theoretical categories of academic study of
religion, thus meeting GS requirements in Humanities and Fine Arts that call for addressing

"questions of human experience and expression . . . human condition . . . basic human values . .

nature." The course leads students to discover ways of creating and shaping collective and
individual religious identities through the various categories of religion. By offering opportunities
for students to evaluate theoretical constructs in light of data from specific religious traditions,
this course meets GS requirements in Literacy and Critical Inquiry (L), namely gathering,
interpretation, and evaluation of evidence . . . (and helping students to sustain and extend their
ability to reason critically and communicate clearly.

Discussion: Religious Authority
Just about every world religion has an authority figure that presides over the religious institution and interprets and oversees the doctrine. In Christianity, for example, the structure of the religion’s institution has shifted over time and is currently rigidly centralized in some sects while decentralized in others. The related role of religious authority has been particularly contentious and has shifted as the institution itself changed over the centuries. Today, many Christian sects have split from others because of conflicting beliefs in who has authority. In this Discussion, you will compare religious authority and attendant institutions of two religions you have studied in the week’s readings.
To prepare for this Discussion:
1.
Review your course text’s selected readings for this week.
2.
Choose two religious traditions to compare. Be sure one of the traditions is the tradition you selected to focus on in your Final Project.
3.
Consider these questions:

Who is in charge?

Who is allowed a say in religious actions?

Are the religions deeply centralized? Loosely hierarchical?
o
How does a culture evolve and change if religious institutions govern the values and practices of the culture?

In a second paragraph, discuss the idea that if a higher power confers authority and shapes the religious institution, how does this influence the culture that practices the religion? Can people change values in the culture if the religion originally sets the precedence? Support your assertions by making at least 2 references, in proper APA format, to your course readings.

Catalog Description
Ritual, symbol, and myth as types of religious expression, with examples selected from the literate
and nonliterate religions of the world.
Course Overview
This course explores some of the principle ways in which humans employ myth, ritual, and
symbols to articulate and express religious beliefs and practices. It analyzes the relationships
among these three modes of religious expression, and their relationships to other dimensions of
religion. We will examine these aspects of religion as they occur in a variety of religious
traditions, comparing and contrasting different ways in which religion is experienced. Discussion
of these concepts will emphasize the development of critical thinking skills.
This course broadens students' understanding of the theoretical categories of academic study of
religion, thus meeting GS requirements in Humanities and Fine Arts that call for addressing

"questions of human experience and expression . . . human condition . . . basic human values . .
. (and) broader and deeper understanding of an individual's relationship to self, culture, and
nature." The course leads students to discover ways of creating and shaping collective and
individual religious identities through the various categories of religion. By offering opportunities
for students to evaluate theoretical constructs in light of data from specific religious traditions,
this course meets GS requirements in Literacy and Critical Inquiry (L), namely gathering,
interpretation, and evaluation of evidence . . . (and helping students to sustain and extend their
ability to reason critically and communicate clearly.

Discussion: Religious Authority
Just about every world religion has an authority figure that presides over the religious institution and interprets and oversees the doctrine. In Christianity, for example, the structure of the religion’s institution has shifted over time and is currently rigidly centralized in some sects while decentralized in others. The related role of religious authority has been particularly contentious and has shifted as the institution itself changed over the centuries. Today, many Christian sects have split from others because of conflicting beliefs in who has authority. In this Discussion, you will compare religious authority and attendant institutions of two religions you have studied in the week’s readings.
To prepare for this Discussion:

Review your course text’s selected readings for this week.
2.
Choose two religious traditions to compare. Be sure one of the traditions is the tradition you selected to focus on in your Final Project.
3.
Consider these questions:

Who is in charge?

Who is allowed a say in religious actions?

Are the religions deeply centralized? Loosely hierarchical?
o
How does a culture evolve and change if religious institutions govern the values and practices of the culture?
Post
a paragraph of your evaluation of religious authority and power in the two religions you chose. In a second paragraph, discuss the idea that if a higher power confers authority and shapes the religious institution, how does this influence the culture that practices the religion? Can people change values in the culture if the religion originally sets the precedence? Support your assertions by making at least 2 references, in proper APA format, to your course readings.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.

However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
