Reiki Definition
The word “Reiki” means “mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign.”
It comes from the Japanese words “rei” (universal) and “ki” (life
energy).
Reiki is a complementary health approach in which practitioners
place their hands on or just above different areas of the body. It’s
based on an Eastern medicine belief that living beings have energy
fields that support their health and vitality.
Reiki Definition (2)
“…a powerful yet subtle healing practice used as a support for wellness on a body,
mind and spiritual level. It is offered through non-invasive, light touch to a clothed
client on a massage table. Reiki energy work helps to restore balance, increase
energy flow, improve sleep and relieve pain. One of the greatest benefits of Reiki
is stress reduction and relaxation which triggers the body’s natural healing
abilities.”
University of Maryland School of Medicine
Center for Integrative Medicine
Origin of Reiki
Dr. Mikao Usui - founder of Reiki ~1922
Dr. Usui attended his own training rediscovery course in a cave on
Mount Kurama. For 21 days, Dr. Usui fasted, meditated and prayed.
On the morning of the twenty-first day, Dr. Usui experienced an event
that would change his life forever. He saw ancient Sanskrit symbols
that helped him develop the system of healing he had been struggling
to invent. Usui Reiki was born.
Origin of Reiki
Dr. Chujiro Hayashi
Dr. Usui taught several Reiki masters to ensure that his system would
not be forgotten. Among them was Dr. Chujiro Hayashi.
Dr. Hayashi is credited with further developing the Usui system of
Reiki by adding hand positions to more thoroughly cover the body.
Dr. Hayashi also changed and refined the attunement process.
Origin of Reiki
Hawayo Takata
Dr. Hayashi trained several more Reiki Masters, including a woman
named Hawayo Takata. Mrs. Takata was a Japanese-American
woman who originally went to Dr. Hayashi for healing. Upon learning
the system herself, Mrs. Takata took Reiki home to the United States.
~1936
Before he died, Dr. Hayashi managed to impart all of Dr. Usui’s
teachings onto Mrs. Takata. She continued to practice Reiki for many
years. When she died, she had attuned 22 Reiki masters.
Example Session
Reiki session ~45-60 min
Reiki is offered through light, non-invasive
touch with the practitioner's hands placed
and held on a series of locations on the
head and front and back of the torso. The
hand positions generally follow the chakra
points but not required.
At the conclusion of the energy healing
portion of the session, energetic
grounding is conducted to complete the
session.
Distance Reiki sessions
The mojo for a distance reiki session is the Distance Healing Symbol
The practitioner makes a remote connection to the client
using the distance healing symbol - the session proceeds
the same as in person session after making the connection
Reiki Levels
The First Degree (Shoden)
Level 1 is a practitioner's initiation into reiki and is open to anyone. The focus
during Level 1 is on opening the energy channels on a physical level, allowing the
practitioner to connect to the universal life force energy, which flows from the
cosmos through the crown of the head and down to the heart and hands.
TLDR; Self Reiki
Reiki Levels
The Second Degree (Okuden)
Level 2 gives students the skills to practice reiki on others and open energy
channels more deeply. Students also receive their symbols during this level. There
are five symbols in reiki and each one corresponds to a specific energy (power,
harmony, distance, mastery, and completion).
TLDR; Reiki for others
Reiki Levels
The Third Degree (Shinpiden) & Reiki Master
The Reiki Master Level is traditionally considered the teacher's level, and masters
are able to walk away and attune new reiki practitioners.
TLDR; Mastery / Teach and attune others
Benefits of Reiki
Science of Reiki
Qi (a.k.a. chi or life-force energy) has been long recognized as a natural pattern of
energy that circulates in channels of the body called meridians.

Science of Reiki
As of now the science is unproven but “Reiki Is Better Than Placebo and Has Broad Potential as
a Complementary Health Therapy” (1)
[CG] Personal feeling - when you lack EVIDENCE - go with your repeated EXPERIENCE
The amount of hospitals/hospice/shared experiences with the modality shows me “something” is
going on. (2)

But what is Reiki really?
It’s all about the energy
And your connection to the Universe*
We’ve lost our connection to the Universe
We’ve lost our knowing that we and everything are energy (in motion)
We’ve lost our knowing that we are all interconnected (Law of One)
Reiki allows us to feel and work with energy, even across distances, reminding us
our healing abilities, movement of energy, and that everything on the planet is
alive and interconnected
* or whatever you call it
Healing?
What happens for “healing”
Practitioner gives off a frequency vibration of “healing”
Client decides/intends to match that frequency. If they do - they can be “healed”
or experience relief for a period of time
In general Reiki is not a “one and done” thing but it can be (depends on client)
Practitioner is the guide|signal generator but the client actually allows/does the
work
