Regional Identity
English
English people are often stereotyped as
being racist and drinking a lot of beer.
Another stereotype for English people is
that they love football and any other sports
such as rugby. German people for example
think that English people are crazy because
the people are dressed very crazy for
example they are wearing clothes with lots
of different colours and unusual shapes. I
can say through my own experience that
this is not the truth. There are some who
are dressed like this but that is not the
majority.
• One example can be seen in the TV
drama EastEnders as there is a character
called Mick Carter who has his own pub.
Scottish
Scottish people are
stereotyped as they all have
ginger hair and pale skin.
They hate English people but
love drinking whiskey.
Scottish people are also
stereotyped as they are very
violent and often involved in
bar fights.
• You can see Scottish
stereotypes in the TV
drama Waterloo road as
there is a character called
Christine and she is an
alcoholic.
Welsh
Welsh people are often
stereotyped as being boring
and hanging out with their
sheep. They are also shown
as they are living in the
middle of the countryside
and love to be in the nature.
• An example for Welsh
people can be seen in the
TV drama the Valleys
which is set in Wales
Irish
Irish people are
stereotyped as they
always live in the country
and work on farms. They
are also very
religious, good at dancing
and singing, are very
friendly but not very
intelligent and it is said
that they are very big
drinkers.
• An example within TV
drama is The Fall.
North
People who are living in
the north are stereotyped
as poor, lower class, less
clever, always bad
weather, aggressive, less
culture and that they are
doing working class jobs
such as building
• One Example within TV
drama is Shameless
South
Stereotypes for people who
are living in the south are
rich, upper class, centre of
culture, clever, classy, mode
rn, sunny. This is mostly the
opposite to the people who
are living in the North of
England.
• An Example within TV
drama is The only way is
Essex
South west
People who are living in
south west are often
stereotyped as living in
rural areas and working
on farms. The people
who are living in
Cornwall or Somerset are
stereotyped as being
“backwards”.
• An Example within TV
drama is Doc Martin
London
There are two stereotypes of
Londoner’s:
1. One is that they are often
shown as being
rich, posh, snobby, upper
class, Hugh Grant types
from central or west
london. Think Made in
Chelsea…
2. The other is that they
often shown as being
from north, east or south
London, poor, common, lo
wer
class, criminalistic, violent
“Kidulthood” style
Essex
People who are living
in Essex often shown
as being glamourous
but
cheap, footballer’s
wives, lots of
partying and being
quite stupid
• This can be seen in
the TV drama The
only way is Essex

associated with people form
Manchester, Liverpool and
