Reflective Journal Week 4
Innovative Teaching Strategies
Christine Smart – English Language Specialist, US Department of State
I have learned a lot of new practical teaching techniques about four macro-skills in this
fourth week. Apart from the four macro-skills, I found that Innovative Teaching Strategies session
is completely new to me. In this session, I have learned some teaching theories from three famous
Second Language Acquisition (SLA) researchers such as Stephen Krashen, Ana Filipek, and
Howard Gardner. Among them, I really love the theory ‘Access the Core’ by Ann Filipek, and I
really enjoyed with Christine’s Pictorial Reveal demonstration. I believe that this technique will
help my students in three ways. First, students will enjoy learning new vocabularies by seeing
teacher’s drawing on the whiteboard. In addition, they are only learning new vocabularies, but they
also practice their speaking with their partners at the same time. During the class, teacher
introduces new vocabulary step by step and leave some time for students to talk before he or she
continue the other parts of the picture. Second, after teacher completes the whole picture that he
or she wants to reveal, he or she will introduce Three-round Vocabulary activity to the class.
Students will learn and practice those new vocabularies in class. They will enjoy working in group
and compete with other groups. Third, students will learn, participate, and play from the beginning
until the end of the session, so they will not get bored. Example, teacher may introduce Popcorn
activity to students so that I they can move and talk to other students in class. In short, I strongly
believe that my students will actively participate in classroom activities, and they will enjoy
learning English language.
