While I have experience in counseling kids, I have absolutely no experience in group counseling; I have always believed that it would be extremely difficult for me to do group counseling in a professional setting. However, I have always wanted to start a group therapy/counseling program for people who suffer from epilepsy because there are so few of them, they are desperately needed, and I am epileptic as well.
In order to get my group (or any group) started on the right foot, I believe that having a pre-group meeting is vital. The pre-group meeting allows the leader and group members to get on the same page by allowing everyone to know what the group's goals are and what they can expect from the group meetings (Corey et al, 2014). I would make sure that topics that are relevant to every group member would be covered to the best extent possible.
Once the group meetings begin, I believe that it would be very important for members to get to know others on a more personal level; that is why I believe that dyad pairs would work very well with this type of group. The dyad pairs would allow for greater interaction, greater empathy for others in the group, and greater understanding among the members. Since epilepsy is such a broad disorder, the dyad pairs could bring together two people who suffer from the same type of epilepsy (such as tonic clonic) and allow them to share their experiences among one another.
In an individual setting, I love using cognitive behavioral therapy, but I believe that it would be very difficult to use in a group setting because there are so many people involved. I would be uncomfortable using it because I would be afraid of alienating the person that I am trying to help.

Question 1- The leadership competency I chose as my strength is “communicates
powerfully and broadly”. In table 12-1 (DuBrin, 2016) I find that when I communicate I use
many of the inspirational tactics listed. I try to gear my message to the audience or individual
listener, and try to sell the person or group on the benefits of what I am saying. I try to be
precise and don’t use fancy words that are hard to understand. My words normally reflect my
actions which builds my credibility. Over the past five years I have given many speeches to
small groups and audiences. Many people have approached me after my speeches and
commented how they were moved by my speech and they feel I have a gift of speaking. I have
received positive feedback each time I have spoken to various groups. This gives me validation
that I comfortable speaking and have a natural ability to persuade audiences.
Question 2 - The complimentary skill I selected to develop and pair with my strength, is
“inspires and motivates others” involves appealing to their emotions and values (DuBrin, 2016).
I find that if I appeal to people’s emotions it will help motivate them to be on board with what I
am saying or help them to accomplish a common goal. If what I am saying matches their values

and it creates an emotion of excitement, they are more likely to follow me and accomplish a
goal. This is an important skill needed for all leaders. Having the ability to motivate and inspire
others will allow me to build trust with those I am speaking with. I believe this skill will help
lead the charge in the workplace by inspiring others to reach their full potential and help keep
employees motivated. People like to follow people who inspire them.
Question 3 – To develop my competency of inspiring and motivating others, I chose to
watch and listen to motivational speakers on YouTube. One of my favorite motivational
speakers is Michael Jr., who is also a Christian comedian. Michael Jr. has a way of presenting
material in a way that is funny and also motivates people change near the end of his message.
He has a subtle way of delivering a powerful message. Michael Jr. would be considered a

Reflective Practice

Question 1- The leadership competency I chose as my strength is “communicates
powerfully and broadly”. In table 12-1 (DuBrin, 2016) I find that when I communicate I use
many of the inspirational tactics listed. I try to gear my message to the audience or individual
listener, and try to sell the person or group on the benefits of what I am saying. I try to be
precise and don’t use fancy words that are hard to understand. My words normally reflect my
actions which builds my credibility. Over the past five years I have given many speeches to
small groups and audiences. Many people have approached me after my speeches and
commented how they were moved by my speech and they feel I have a gift of speaking. I have
received positive feedback each time I have spoken to various groups. This gives me validation
that I comfortable speaking and have a natural ability to persuade audiences.
Question 2 - The complimentary skill I selected to develop and pair with my strength, is
“inspires and motivates others” involves appealing to their emotions and values (DuBrin, 2016).
I find that if I appeal to people’s emotions it will help motivate them to be on board with what I
am saying or help them to accomplish a common goal. If what I am saying matches their values

and it creates an emotion of excitement, they are more likely to follow me and accomplish a
goal. This is an important skill needed for all leaders. Having the ability to motivate and inspire
others will allow me to build trust with those I am speaking with. I believe this skill will help
lead the charge in the workplace by inspiring others to reach their full potential and help keep
employees motivated. People like to follow people who inspire them.
Question 3 – To develop my competency of inspiring and motivating others, I chose to
watch and listen to motivational speakers on YouTube. One of my favorite motivational
speakers is Michael Jr., who is also a Christian comedian. Michael Jr. has a way of presenting
material in a way that is funny and also motivates people change near the end of his message.
He has a subtle way of delivering a powerful message. Michael Jr. would be considered a
charismatic leader. Charisma means to have “a charming and colorful personality” (DuBrin,
2016, p.74) and I believe that Michael Jr. has the type of charisma that is a positive

Surveys to find out what are possible career choices, research of the career that fitted best and an interview of someone in that career were all used to see if the career chosen was something the individual wanted to stick with. The process went from what the individual already possessed to what the individual needs to posses for the career path they want to take. 2. Write about what you have learned from this assignment. Describe the skills and competencies demonstrated by this assignment. From this assignment I have learned in order for me to have the career path I want there has to be some kind of plan for me to follow. Furthermore, I learned that there is no way for me to achieve what I want to accomplish if I am not prepared. From this assignment I learned my strengths and definitely my weaknesses. I now know what I need to work on to try and fulfill my career choice and how it needs to be done. Lastly, I learned that for me to gain any position in the work world that I have to have as many good characteristics I possibly can, something that will set me apart from the rest. 3. Evaluate your performance on the assignment. Identify what you did well and what could be improved. Overall, I think I did well on this assignment. I included everything that was supposed to be incorporated into this project with the most quality research I could find. I think I did good on the career research assignment and the career interview. These two assignments were very important for me to give my total attention because they basically dealt with my life. I wanted to figure out as much as I could about a possible career journey that I may be soon on. What could be improved were my sample cover letter and my resume. I believed that if I have been aprt of more community projects and school activities my resume could look better. Also I think my sample letter could have had a little bit more detailed.
