Reflection Diary
Week 1
Week one of The Grid project began with researching social media demographics.
Finding the most popular social media sites yearly and in 2021 so far. Then I began
looking at the numbers of social media income because sponsors and how these
sponsors helped developed social media.
Then I began deeper detail into YouTube and the top 16 type of videos that people
in the age group of 16-24 watch and our most interested in.
These 16 video types allowed me to research and understand what type of ideas I need to look into more to
help me out. Then I began created my audience profile and slowly started working through the stages of it.
Age, Gender, Location, Education, Employment then the Psychographic with interests, Sports, Lifestyles,
Values then the Challenges and Goals. I began slowly filling in the details and trying to get sure
Week 1
The research I carried out was mainly on demographics and trying to find the most popular social media
sites among 16-24 years as that is our target for this project. This was important because it helped me
then find further and more in depth research on the most popular sites and then find some
demographics on what those sites are used for by this age group as in what they search, like and the type
of people they follow. Finding these stats gives me more detail into what these people in this age group
will want to see, read and so on in The Grid.
Then I began some more in depth research into YouTube because that is one of the most popular sites
and definitely used more than these demographics show. So I research the most popular types of video
watched by users aged 16-24 and found the top 16 ranging from Q&A’s, Gaming commentaries, music
videos and Vlogs. This then led me into looking at the top 10 Youtubers based on the last recorded
numbers. I then found how much YouTube has grown in terms of the money it creates each year and the
numbers since 2010 have risen more and more yearly as more creators join and begin a journey.
Then I began the audience profile. The audience profile began with the easy question of the age group
under question. The gender question was an easy one to answer because I don’t want any issues and I
want to appeal to both genders and every single person and make sure what is put together. The location
is staying here in York with people giving feedback.
Week 2
Brand research so I began looking at the most popular social media platforms and the different uses of colour
they all have. Looking at twitter and Facebook they both use the similar blue colour but Facebook use a much
darker shade of blue with the famous white F. Instagram which is the second most popular social media behind
Facebook is the most colourful of the lot with the Purple, pink and Orange design meaning it instantly catches
the eye say if you were on your home screen your eyes would instantly find it.
Then after this I began logo creation and trying to use the currently social media sites and how they are
designed and trying to take the simple idea of using the words ‘The Grid’ and trying to take it to a new level
and really create a logo that shows off The Grid and grabs the attention of people. I’m thinking going colourful
like Instagram but combining colours that are most liked among the age group in question. Colour seems to
grab the attention and really aids the process of getting that app used like Instagram the old logo was pretty
boring and easy to miss but now the bright colours really grab the eye.
Reds, Blues, Purples, Pinks, Oranges, Whites, Black all seem popular so I began testing them all out and then
playing about with text.. My first 3 designs ended up with one purple background with the orange text, a black
background with some purple triangles and the red text and the final one being a solid white background and
then 3 white circles (sort of like the Japanese flag)
