Quiz questions are reading comprehension questions: The discussion boards are designed to give you a chance to try out your own arguments and to evaluation the arguments in the readings. The quizzes are designed to test reading comprehension. This does not mean the quiz questions will be rote (i.e., what does Herrick say on page 24, paragraph 1). They will require active reading and comprehension of what is written. Key Point: The answers will come from the text. 2. Reading Philosophy may require skills that you haven’t yet mastered. I have two points, here. First, reading comprehension, in any discipline, improves with knowledge of the subject matter. If you have never taken a philosophy course before (or read philosophical essays) then you can expect to find the material more challenging at first than at the end, after you have developed a feel for philosophical writing & reading. Second, reading philosophy may be more challenging that reading other kinds of writing. Philosophy majors consistently outperform other majors on graduate level entrance exams (for law, business, general grad school, and even the MCAT, for medicine). Most likely, this is because of the kinds of skills required to read, write, and understand philosophical writing. Key Point: Give yourself room to grow in your skills. Just because you’ve gotten a 4.0 in your other classes, doesn’t mean that you will get a 4.0 on every quiz in this class. The types of things that are important to notice in a philosophical essay may be different from the types of things you are used to looking for. And the types of logical inferences required in philosophical reading may be different from your typical patterns of inference. 3. What to notice -- Understand Logic: Mastering the material at the end of the first reading will help your reading comprehension (of philosophy) immensely. Here is a brief outline of the different types of arguments/reasoning. Make sure you can define and identify each type. As you encounter new arguments, or argument types, put them on your map. Key Point: As you read, pay close attention to how arguments are characterized. Different types of arguments require different standards of evaluation. 1. Deductive arguments (reasoning): At best, if the premises are true, the conclusion MUST be true. a. My name is Angela Stevens McNeil and I have the privilege of introducing the next Hall of Honor Inductee, Dr. William Allan Kritsonis. Dr. Kritsonis was chosen because of his dedication to the educational advancement of Prairie View A&M University students. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in 1969 from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington. In 1971, he earned his Master’s in Education from Seattle Pacific University. In 1976, he earned his PhD from the University of Iowa. Dr. Kritsonis has served and blessed the field of education as a teacher, principal, superintendent of schools, director of student teaching and field experiences, invited guest professor, author, consultant, editor-in-chief, and publisher. He has also earned tenure as a professor at the highest academic rank at two major universities. In 2005, Dr. Kritsonis was an Invited Visiting Lecturer at the Oxford Round Table at Oriel College in the University of Oxford, Oxford, England. His lecture was entitled the Ways of Knowing through the Realms of Meaning. In 2004, Dr. William Allan Kritsonis was recognized as the Central Washington University Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus for the College of Education and Professional Studies. Asselin, PhD, RN-BC Reflection is a critical component of professional nursing practice and a strategy for learning through practice. This integrative review synthesizes the literature addressing the use of reflection as an educational strategy and reports outcomes from the use of reflective strategies. Reflection education is primarily nested in programs to meet specific clinical goals, structured with group facilitation. Findings suggest that reflective strategies stimulate learning in practice, enhance readiness to apply new knowledge, and promote practice change. INTRODUCTION In recent years, reflection has gained increased recognition as a critical component of professional nursing practice and as an educational strategy to acquire knowledge and learn through practice (Asselin & Fain, 2013; Kim, 1999; Perry, 2000). Although there is no agreed upon definition, reflection is generally understood as the deliberate process of critically thinking about a clinical experience, which leads to development of insights for potential practice change (Asselin & Fain, 2013). Scholars contend that reflection offers nurses the opportunity to build on existing knowledge through clinical experiences (Johns, 1995; Kuiper & Pesut, 2004; Perry, 2000), develop clinical judgment (Nielsen, Stragnell, & Jester, 2007; Tanner, 2006), promote strong communication skills, build collaborative practice, and improve patient care (Horton-Deutsch, 2012; Peden-McAlpine, Tomlinson, Forneris, Genck, & Meiers, 2005). Although it is generally assumed that nurses know how to reflect, findings from recent studies suggest that nurses’ reflective thinking may be prolonged by pauses and they may need assistance in systematically moving insights to practice change (Asselin & Fain, 2013; Asselin, Schwartz- Barcott, & Osterman, 2013). Consequently, continuing education on reflection and reflective practice is viewed as a vehicle to enhance professional practice, promote evidence- based practice, and potentially improve patient outcomes.
