Refining the Theoretical Foundation for Research Cassandra felt a huge sense of relief as she saw all of the elements of her theoretical foundation come together. She had invested a lot of time and energy into understanding her selected phenomenon and she was confident that she was on her way to developing a strong program of research. She was happy to set aside the work and enjoy some much-needed rest. When she looked at the partial draft of her paper again a few days later, she was surprised to notice a significant inconsistency in how she defined one of the concepts. With fresh eyes, she was able to discover something she had been overlooking for weeks! Now, it seemed like she would need to start at the beginning again to clarify the meaning of this concept. Since Eduardo first began developing his theoretical foundation for research, a small, quiet voice had been nagging for his attention. He thought that he would understand certain aspects of his phenomenon better by now, and it bothered him that parts of his foundation still did not seem to work together. On the one hand, he reassured himself that his theoretical foundation was probably good enough for now and his confusion was due to his inexperience with the whole research process. On the other hand, he wondered if his doubts could mean that his theoretical foundation was missing something critical. He wasn’t sure what to do. As Taylor thought more deeply about her theoretical foundation, she wondered if she was using the right symbols to convey the information as she intended. She had already revised her graphic model a number of times, and she still wasn’t sure if it made sense. Finally, she realized that she really needed others’ input, because even if it did seem logical to her, it might not be clear to others who were less familiar with her phenomenon of interest. While I have experience in counseling kids, I have absolutely no experience in group counseling; I have always believed that it would be extremely difficult for me to do group counseling in a professional setting. However, I have always wanted to start a group therapy/counseling program for people who suffer from epilepsy because there are so few of them, they are desperately needed, and I am epileptic as well.
In order to get my group (or any group) started on the right foot, I believe that having a pre-group meeting is vital. The pre-group meeting allows the leader and group members to get on the same page by allowing everyone to know what the group's goals are and what they can expect from the group meetings (Corey et al, 2014). I would make sure that topics that are relevant to every group member would be covered to the best extent possible.
Once the group meetings begin, I believe that it would be very important for members to get to know others on a more personal level; that is why I believe that dyad pairs would work very well with this type of group. The dyad pairs would allow for greater interaction, greater empathy for others in the group, and greater understanding among the members. Since epilepsy is such a broad disorder, the dyad pairs could bring together two people who suffer from the same type of epilepsy (such as tonic clonic) and allow them to share their experiences among one another.
In an individual setting, I love using cognitive behavioral therapy, but I believe that it would be very difficult to use in a group setting because there are so many people involved. I would be uncomfortable using it because I would be afraid of alienating the person that I am trying to help.

This group would be established with a set criteria for participation. So here you are, in the early part of a course that focuses on research methods, and now you have to come up with a problem that you are supposed to be interested in! You are probably so anxious about learning the material contained in your professor’s lectures and what is in this volume that you barely have time to think about anything else.
If you stop for a moment and let your mind explore some of the issues in the behavioral and social sciences that have piqued your interest, you will surely find something that you want to know more about. That is what the research process is all about—finding out more about something that is, in part, already known.
Once you select an area of interest, you are only part of the way there. Next comes the statement of this interest in the form of a research question followed by a formal hypothesis. Then it is on to reviewing the literature, a sort of fancy phrase that sounds like you will be very busy! A literature review involves library time online or actually there, note taking, and organizational skills (and of course writing), but it provides a perspective on your question that you cannot get without knowing what other work has been done as well as what new work needs to be done.
But hold on a minute! How is someone supposed to have a broad enough understanding of the field and spew forth well-formed hypotheses before the literature is reviewed and then become familiar with what is out there? As poet John Ciardi wrote, therein “lies the rub.”
The traditional philosophers and historians of science would have us believe that the sequence of events leading up to a review of what has been done before (as revealed in the literature) is as shown in Figure 3A.1a. This sequence of steps is fine in theory, but as you will discover, the actual process does not go exactly in the manner shown in the figure.
The research question and research hypothesis are more an outgrowth of an interaction between the scientist’s original idea and an ongoing, thorough review of the literature (good scientists are always reading), as you can see in Figure 3A.1b. This means that once you formulate a hypothesis, it is not carved in stone but can be altered to fit what the review of the literature may reflect, as well as any change in ideas you ma.

The demands of communication studies research
Research ranks among the most abused concept in the academic circle. Often times, a student who went to the library in search of facts to back up his or her term paper or assignment comes back to announce that he or she almost died carrying out research in the library. In this case, mere flipping through the pages of some books and copying some portions of the books become a research effort.
Again, some people perceive checking for the meaning of a word or an historical fact in the encyclopedia as a research activity (Osuala, 2005).
Research, however, is much more than all these. It is hardly as simple as consulting a dictionary or an encyclopedia to ascertain the meaning of a word or a historical fact that is already there in the dictionary or encyclopedia as the case may be.

At this time, the aspect in the doctoral process that holds the most confidence is the coursework. I have generally been rather successful in completing tasks, and earning decent grades. The history of coursework, grades, and determination to complete things that have been started provides the confidence to support the previous statement.
The aspect of the doctoral process that is most concerning is the Comprehensive Exam. While I work “well under pressure”, I am concerned about the amount of work required for the rather short time frame provided to compete the Comprehensive Exam (28 days, 3 questions, each answer being 12-17 pages in length). These requirements, at this point in the doctoral journey, are intimidating.
At this point in my life, career, and education, I have learned the value of asking for, and accepting help. I believe that self-sufficiency is extremely important, but not to the extent that my health and sanity should be at risk. While I feel more confident in many aspects of my life when I am doing well in other aspects, I am not beyond taking care of myself. As I tell my clients often, you must take care of yourself, to be able to take care of others. If I do not perform self-care, how can I care for my clients? Ruscio (2006), in
Critical Thinking in Psychology,
referenced the “well-established correlation between self-esteem and academic achievement” (p. 99). While there is controversy in this correlation, I personally feel that academic achievement increases self-esteem, rather than the other way around. However, they both affect each other differently, for different individuals. As most things in life, it is dependent upon the individual, rather than 100% one way or the other.
The sources of help in the process of doctoral learning that appears to be most helpful would be the dissertation mentor and academic advisor. These individuals would be helpful in providing feedback, support, answering questions, and helping to take the mystery out of the process. The presentation “Welcome to Dissertation” provided insight on the process, and solidified the thought that they will be useful in the dissertation process.

I am still not sure if I have confidence in any aspect of this process at this point. I do feel like I am slowly getting a better understanding of the dissertation process and no longer think this is something that happens to end your Ph.D. but rather starts from day one. I am starting to gain confidence in my topic of interest and my ability to create new and important research in the field. The capacity to adapt is crucial in an era of rapid change. Today’s politically astute nurses have many opportunities to shape public policy, by working in coalition together and with other health professionals and consumers, and to advocate for state and federal health policies and regulations that will allow the public greater access to affordable, quality health care. The window of opportunity that opened with the enactment of the comprehensive ACA will look somewhat different as we move forward. It is essential for nurses and APRNs to develop skills to capitalize on the chaos present in the healthcare and political environments and to create opportunities to advance the profession as a whole. Familiarity with the regulatory process will give nurses and APRNs the tools needed to navigate this dynamic environment with confidence. Knowing how to monitor the status of critical issues involving scopes of practice, licensure, and reimbursement will allow APRNs to influence the outcomes of debates on those issues. Participation in specialty professional nurse organizations is especially advantageous. Participation builds a membership base, providing the foundation for strong coalition building and a power base from which to effect change in the political and regulatory arenas. Participation also gives members ready access to a network of colleagues, legislative affairs information, and professional and educational opportunities. Although supporting the profession through participation is central, it is equally important to remember that each professional nurse has the ability to make a difference.

So here you are, in the early part of a course that focuses on research methods, and now you have to come up with a problem that you are supposed to be interested in! You are probably so anxious about learning the material contained in your professor’s lectures and what is in this volume that you barely have time to think about anything else.
If you stop for a moment and let your mind explore some of the issues in the behavioral and social sciences that have piqued your interest, you will surely find something that you want to know more about. That is what the research process is all about—finding out more about something that is, in part, already known.
Once you select an area of interest, you are only part of the way there. Next comes the statement of this interest in the form of a research question followed by a formal hypothesis. Then it is on to reviewing the literature, a sort of fancy phrase that sounds like you will be very busy! A literature review involves library time online or actually there, note taking, and organizational skills (and of course writing), but it provides a perspective on your question that you cannot get without knowing what other work has been done as well as what new work needs to be done.
But hold on a minute! How is someone supposed to have a broad enough understanding of the field and spew forth well-formed hypotheses before the literature is reviewed and then become familiar with what is out there? As poet John Ciardi wrote, therein “lies the rub.”
The traditional philosophers and historians of science would have us believe that the sequence of events leading up to a review of what has been done before (as revealed in the literature) is as shown in Figure 3A.1a. This sequence of steps is fine in theory, but as you will discover, the actual process does not go exactly in the manner shown in the figure.
The research question and research hypothesis are more an outgrowth of an interaction between the scientist’s original idea and an ongoing, thorough review of the literature (good scientists are always reading), as you can see in Figure 3A.1b. This means that once you formulate a hypothesis, it is not carved in stone but can be altered to fit what the review of the literature may reflect, as well as any change in ideas you ma.

The demands of communication studies research
Research ranks among the most abused concept in the academic circle. Often times, a student who went to the library in search of facts to back up his or her term paper or assignment comes back to announce that he or she almost died carrying out research in the library. In this case, mere flipping through the pages of some books and copying some portions of the books become a research effort.
Again, some people perceive checking for the meaning of a word or an historical fact in the encyclopedia as a research activity (Osuala, 2005).
Research, however, is much more than all these. It is hardly as simple as consulting a dictionary or an encyclopedia to ascertain the meaning of a word or a historical fact that is already there in the dictionary or encyclopedia as the case may be.

At this time, the aspect in the doctoral process that holds the most confidence is the coursework. I have generally been rather successful in completing tasks, and earning decent grades. The history of coursework, grades, and determination to complete things that have been started provides the confidence to support the previous statement.
The aspect of the doctoral process that is most concerning is the Comprehensive Exam. While I work “well under pressure”, I am concerned about the amount of work required for the rather short time frame provided to compete the Comprehensive Exam (28 days, 3 questions, each answer being 12-17 pages in length). These requirements, at this point in the doctoral journey, are intimidating.
At this point in my life, career, and education, I have learned the value of asking for, and accepting help. I believe that self-sufficiency is extremely important, but not to the extent that my health and sanity should be at risk. While I feel more confident in many aspects of my life when I am doing well in other aspects, I am not beyond taking care of myself. As I tell my clients often, you must take care of yourself, to be able to take care of others. If I do not perform self-care, how can I care for my clients? Ruscio (2006), in
Critical Thinking in Psychology,
referenced the “well-established correlation between self-esteem and academic achievement” (p. 99). While there is controversy in this correlation, I personally feel that academic achievement increases self-esteem, rather than the other way around. However, they both affect each other differently, for different individuals. As most things in life, it is dependent upon the individual, rather than 100% one way or the other.
The sources of help in the process of doctoral learning that appears to be most helpful would be the dissertation mentor and academic advisor. These individuals would be helpful in providing feedback, support, answering questions, and helping to take the mystery out of the process. The presentation “Welcome to Dissertation” provided insight on the process, and solidified the thought that they will be useful in the dissertation process.

I am still not sure if I have confidence in any aspect of this process at this point. I do feel like I am slowly getting a better understanding of the dissertation process and no longer think this is something that happens to end your Ph.D. but rather starts from day one. I am starting to gain confidence in my topic of interest and my ability to create new and important research in the field. I largely think that my confidence in this area is coming primarily from peer feedback in the discussion posts. This group of people has proven to be supportive and .

The capacity to adapt is crucial in an era of rapid change. Today’s politically astute nurses have many opportunities to shape public policy, by working in coalition together and with other health professionals and consumers, and to advocate for state and federal health policies and regulations that will allow the public greater access to affordable, quality health care. The window of opportunity that opened with the enactment of the comprehensive ACA will look somewhat different as we move forward. It is essential for nurses and APRNs to develop skills to capitalize on the chaos present in the healthcare and political environments and to create opportunities to advance the profession as a whole. Familiarity with the regulatory process will give nurses and APRNs the tools needed to navigate this dynamic environment with confidence. Knowing how to monitor the status of critical issues involving scopes of practice, licensure, and reimbursement will allow APRNs to influence the outcomes of debates on those issues. Participation in specialty professional nurse organizations is especially advantageous. Participation builds a membership base, providing the foundation for strong coalition building and a power base from which to effect change in the political and regulatory arenas. Participation also gives members ready access to a network of colleagues, legislative affairs information, and professional and educational opportunities. Although supporting the profession through participation is central, it is equally important to remember that each professional nurse has the ability to make a difference.

Secondly Re-entry should be digitized, every aspect in our society therefore it makes sense where by re-entry programs are also digitized it will help to make the policy much more effective.
Thirdly religion implementation in the re-entry programs should be intensified, as through evidence; religion has proven to be effective, rehabilitation and re-entry of the clients back to the society (Morag & Teman, 2018).

Original problem statement:
In order for RPZ to continue to sustain its rapid growth without putting their integrity into question, they will have to supplement consultants through outsourcing until everyone have been trained. Cross training is going to be an essential part in their continued growth and there is no way RPZ will be able to continue to function day to day if they don’t have enough consultants who are trained in social media analytics. The only way this will be possible is if they outsource and get everyone trained. Once this has been completed, they will have enough consultants to carry the load and business will go on.

Aristotle views rhetoric as the skill of finding the best possible means of persuasion in regard to any topic. He views the practice as only worthwhile when the orator is focused on the essential facts avoiding the temptation to craft a personal appeal. He believes that a speaker must master enthymeme making it more like dialectic so as to avoid using it for the purpose of appealing to emotion or conveying non-essential information. He felt it important to explain how rhetoric was to be used by describing how to craft the rhetorical speech which he felt should lean toward scientific analysis, must be concerned primarily with the modes of persuasion and have reasonable structure that considers argument types which should be addressed through a scientific analysis of appeals.
Like Plato, Aristotle regards that which serves the spirit to be, “the higher good” (Bizzell & Herzberg, 2001, p.176). Unlike Plato, Aristotle places emphasis on the empirical means used to obtain knowledge while Plato emphasizes knowledge as coming from transcendent origins (Bizzell & Herzberg, 2001, p.170). Plato’s rhetoric is defined as the, “study of souls and occasions for moving them (Bizzell & Herzberg, 2001, p.170). Plato describes rhetoric in Phaedrus as persuading others to true knowledge while Aristotle considers rhetoric as useful for decision making where true knowledge cannot be obtained. (Bizzell & Herzberg, 2001, p.170). Aristotle relies on the, “analysis of formal logic,” to “arrive at absolute truth” (Bizzell & Herzberg, 2001, p.169). Plato’s search for truth began with a, “process of inquiry,” that, “takes place through verbal exchange” (Bizzell & Herzberg, 2001, p.81). Similar to Aristotle, Plato sought after a rhetoric whose discourse was, “more analytic, objective and dialectical,” however Aristotle was less philosophically minded when it came to the spiritual nature of discourse and less ambivalent about the, “function of language” in rhetorical speech (Bizzell & Herzberg, 2001, p.81).

In 1948, brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald opened the first McDonald's restaurant in San Bernardino, California. Abstract
This article focuses on the security of the operating system, a fundamental component of ICT that enables many
different applications to be used in a variety of computing hardware. While, the original operating systems for
large centralised computing focused their security efforts primarily on separating users, operating systems secur-
ity has had to adapt to cater for a wider range of technology, such as desktop computers, smartphones and
cloud platforms, and the different threats that have evolved as a consequence. This article examines some of
the core security mechanisms that every operating system needs and the gradual evolution towards offering
a more secure platform.
Introduction: What is the Operating
System?
All too frequently the words operating system conjure
up thoughts of Microsoft Windows made popular as
an operating system that enabled desktop computing.
However, there have been, and still continue to be a
large number of operating system types and versions
in operation [1] for all sorts of devices. These devices
range from those designed to work with mobile
phones, tablets and games consoles of the consumer
world, through to the servers/laptops, network
routers and switches of the IT industry, as well as em-
bedded devices and industrial controllers from indus-
trial engineering. [Dependent upon the hardware
architecture, the operating systems can be significantly
different to the fuller versions that this paper uses to
illustrate the key security mechanisms.]
In essence, the purpose of the operating system is to
provide a layer above the hardware execution environ-
ment, abstracting away low level details, such that it
appropriately shares and enables access to the mul-
tiple hardware components, such as processors,
memory, USB devices, network cards, monitors and
keyboards. It thus provides an environment in which
multiple applications (ranging from advanced
weather forecasting through to word processors,
games and industrial control processes) can all be po-
tentially executed and accessed by multiple users.
Operating systems have a history and timeline dating
back to the development of the first computers in
the early 50s, given that the users, then also needed
a way to execute their applications or programs.

enable new functionality and applications or adapt to

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. - 1. Refining the Theoretical Foundation for Research Cassandra felt a huge sense of relief as she saw all of the elements of her theoretical foundation come together. She had invested a lot of time and energy into understanding her selected phenomenon and she was confident that she was on her way to developing a strong program of research. She was happy to set aside the work and enjoy some much-needed rest. When she looked at the partial draft of her paper again a few days later, she was surprised to notice a significant inconsistency in how she defined one of the concepts. With fresh eyes, she was able to discover something she had been overlooking for weeks! Now, it seemed like she would need to start at the beginning again to clarify the meaning of this concept. Since Eduardo first began developing his theoretical foundation for research, a small, quiet voice had been nagging for his attention. He thought that he would understand certain aspects of his phenomenon better by now, and it bothered him that parts of his foundation still did not seem to work together. On the one hand, he reassured himself that his theoretical foundation was probably good enough for now and his confusion was due to his inexperience with the whole research process. On the other hand, he wondered if his doubts could mean that his theoretical foundation was missing something critical. He wasn’t sure what to do. As Taylor thought more deeply about her theoretical foundation, she wondered if she was using the right symbols to convey the information as she intended. She had already revised her graphic model a number of times, and she still wasn’t sure if it made sense. Finally, she realized that she really needed others’ input, because even if it did seem logical to her, it might not be clear to others who were less familiar with her phenomenon of interest.
