2. The most important part of referencing is
selecting quality resources!
Quality resources will be easy to reference.
If you are having difficulty finding information
about the resource to reference, it may not be
the most reliable source (such as a website
without a credible author or publisher). Find
something else!
3. To inform the reader of direct
quotes, definitions, tables, graphs and pictures in your
assignment.
When paraphrasing or describing another persons idea.
To give weight or credibility to an idea or argument presented
by you.
Referencing or citing your sources is an important part of
academic writing. It lets you acknowledge the ideas or words
of others if you use them in your work and helps avoid
plagiarism.
Referencing also demonstrates that you've read relevant
background literature and you can provide authority for
statements you make in your assignments.
4. At All Saints Senior, we use the Harvard
Referencing System. This is a method of
referencing used in many universities.
The Harvard System requires two parts: a
reference within the text AND a list of
references at the end of your work.
The Harvard citation style can vary in minor
features such as
punctuation, capitalisation, abbreviations, and
the use of italics.
5. 1. DIRECT QUOTE (when you are copying a
quote from the source)
You must use quotation marks and
cite(Surname, year, page no.)
You must give the page number so that the
reader can go directly to the source and find the
quote.
7. 2. PARAPHRASING –
(when you are summarising an idea from a
source but still using someone else‟s idea.)
-There is no need to use quotation marks, as
you are not quoting directly, and no need to
cite the page number, as the idea may be
discussed over a number of pages. Cite
(Surname, year)
