The document is a letter of recommendation from John Lottinville of Baker Hughes for Brett Tomlinson. It summarizes that Brett was hired as a mudlogger in 2011, which involves monitoring drilling operations, maintaining equipment, and analyzing rock samples. Brett proved to be a very quick learner, innovative problem solver, and strong leader. He completed career milestones faster than normal. The letter praises Brett's initiative, work ethic, and positive attitude. It states Brett gained 10 years of experience in 5 years and was sadly missed when he left the company.

To whom it may concern:
Baker Hughes is an Oilfield Service Company and we provide numerous rigsite services to
Oil Companies as they drill their wells.
We hired Brett Tomlinson in May 2011 to be, in layman's terms, a Wellsite Geologist. In
oilfield terms, this position is known as a MudLogger. Unlike a true wellsite geologist, a
MudLogger is really a "jack of all trades and master of none". Some MudLogging
Companies hire Electronic Technicians and teach them enough Geology to do the job.
Other companies hire Geologists and teach them enough Electronics to do the job. Other
companies hire anybody and hope for the best. Baker Hughes prefers University Educated
Geologists or Engineers (as for me, B.S. Geological Sciences, The University of Texas at
Austin 1982, Hook 'em Horns!!).
In addition to troubleshooting electronic gear, there are gas detectors, chromatographs,
various sensors (volume, hookload, torque, rpm, pump strokes, etc.) to maintain, calibrate
and keep running. To add insult to injury, there is an MS SQL database to administer, not to
mention an extremely recalcitrant software package to learn and master. Geologically a
MudLogger must be able to look at, and describe, 3-4 samples per hour, including the
lithology percents (sand, shale, silt, salt). A MudLogger works 12 hours per day on a drilling
rig, either offshore or in the middle of nowhere, on a 14 days on/7 days off schedule (14
Mondays, 7 Saturdays). Finally the MudLogger is the Company's face at the job site and has
all the responsibility for client relations, client service, quality control, sales, etc.
The ultimate product of a MudLogger is to make a MudLog. A MudLog is a graphical
representation of the well, the geology, gas, oil, drilling parameters, problems, etc. that were
encountered as the well was drilled. A good MudLog is a record of the entire well. It is what
happened today and a record for posterity, like a ship’s log.
That's a quick background of what we do, why we hired Brett and what we hired him to do.
I was an Operations & Training Coordinator when I first met Brett in May 2011. Brett was an
extremely quick learner, obviously very bright and keen. In his short time in the field Brett
had learned more than some of our old timers with 10+ years’ experience. Brett also spun
off numerous ideas that are slowly being recognized and implemented (for example: special
cabins for advanced geological analysis and evaluation). In August 2012 Brett’s obvious
talent and knack for the job landed him a coveted position in Norway via a “Foreign
Exchange Student” type program.
In July 2014 Brett returned to the Gulf of Mexico. In two years Brett had successfully
completed his mandated career progression, which normally takes three years. Brett also
kept his infectious sense of humor and has always been upbeat and positive. Brett went
straight back to work as a lead hand and continued to spin off ideas for better services,
better ways to do things and he took action to implement his ideas.
2. It was a sad day for me when Brett left the company. Like all employers, we need great
employees. What we are looking for is someone with initiative, diligence, a quick/self
learner, a leader, a take charge attitude, a “get 'er done” attitude, independent, responsible,
etc. Brett is the guy who got 10 years experience in 5 years.
Sincerely,
John Lottinville | Training and Competency Assurance Coordinator
