The SoScience! Advanced Program
A hands-on, playful and purposeful program for young scientists
Do you know what this is?
A computer in the 60’s
Only fifty years ago.
Nowadays…
There is differences in scale, length, capabilities but also
a different user. Fifty years ago computers were used
only by companies and nowadays it is a part of
everyone’s life.
Change has always existed
It is often lead by technological breakthrough. Our daily routine was completely modified when electricity
was understood: we changed the way we cook, heat our houses, travel and communicate. Even our
economy is influenced by science: globalization wouldn’t be that important without planes. Without even
noticing it human lives have constantly evolved through science and technology.
However it was never that fast
62% of Europeans believe that science is making their way of life change too quickly. Change is becoming
frightening as our models do not evolve and our citizens are not taught how to react to those changes.
Science is an actor of this change
Our young generation will lead those changes, and young scientists will have a major impact. It is thus crucial
to help our future scientists become true citizen and changemakers. They will need leadership
skills, creativity and awareness of the power they hold.
The scientific education must change
Scientific education is undergoing a crisis. Scientists are getting fed up by the old publish-or-perish way of
doing and young people are searching for sense in their courses that they don’t find. Young scientists lack
hands-on problems and lose their understanding of the big picture in theories.
New values are emerging
That can be the basis for the youth to understand this complex and changing world, and empower them to
take on real challenges.
1. Everyone a Changemaker
There is the emergence of a society in which everyone is able to drive change and
have an impact on society. This feeling is growing through powerful tools on the
internet and through a movement of empowerment. As social entrepreneurs show
their capabilities to innovate with frugality, the power of one is questioning classic
models of innovation.
2. Leadership is crucial
With the ability to change the world come quite naturally the idea of leading others
toward change. Change is occurring through tribes that believe in an idea that is
changing the status quo. Becoming the leader of one tribe is facilitated through
social network: you can easily connect to those who care.
3. A collaborative world
Our world is becoming more and more collaborative: it is a smart way to connect, to
reduce our expenses and to protect the planet. This is influencing our games, our
work, our way of being a citizen. It is crucial to understand how nowadays
interactions and connection are made, and to be able to collaborate to move
forward.
New values implie a new scientific education
As much as science shape society, our society shape science. With a new set of value are also emerging new
scientific habits: a more collaborative science, scientists looking for sense and trying to change the world
their way. This changes must be part of the education of our young scientists.
Do It Yourself, citizen involvement in scientific research, a culture of openness, the
search for sense in scientific jobs: all these changes are part of the scientific world
nowadays. Young scientists need to be involved in those movements, part of them
and actors in these changes.

What is the future of education in science?
What is the future of education in science?
At SoScience! we believe that part of the answer lies in Responsible Research and Innovation. This term
covers an inclusive way of doing research: being aware of one’s impact on society, the ongoing involvement
of communities from beginning to end of the innovation process, the deliberate focus of research to achieve
social or environmental impact. That’s how we developed our program for young scientists.
This program was designed for young
scientists. It is part of their curriculum and
gives them new keys to better evolve in this
ever-changing world.
It aims at developing their
empathy, responsibility, awareness and
creativity. While doing this, their scientific
skills are also sharpened on real scientific
problems encountered by social
entrepreneurs all-over the world.
A hands-on, playful and purposeful
program for young scientists
First, students have a real community-sourced research project to lead. Being confronted to a real and
complex problem, they need to imagine solutions to move forward as no one has the answer yet. The results
benefit a social entrepreneur encountering this R&D issue. They team up by 3 to 5, have an access to labs
and must pursue an on-going discussion with social entrepreneurs. This develops their empathy, sense of
care, self-esteem, teamwork and scientific skills.
Scientific research projects based on concrete R&D needs from social
entrepreneurs
Second, SoScience! delivers them with courses, workshops and events on responsible research to free their
creativity and allow them thinking out of the box. They learn how innovation processes are intertwined with
the real world and discover through role games how they can be actors in this world through their skills. This
develops their leadership skills, self-esteem and involvement.
Pedagogic tools to free students creativity and self-esteem
We make it happen by allowing young scientists to take on real and complex challenges through hands-on
experiment, role games and collaboration with their peers, the community and social entrepreneurs.
The SoScience! Advanced Program aims at creating a generation of
scientists that will stand-up to become changemakers besides the civil
society
