RED HAT LINUX 9 - Introduction Released in March 2003 (summer). Also known as SHRIKE. It combined cutting edge open source technology and easy to use Bluecurve technology interface. With improved graphical installation, new usability enhancement and end-user applications, Red Hat Linux 9 was designed for students, home computing and technology enthusiasts.
RED HAT LINUX 9 - Features BLUECURVE - an easy to navigate interface with organized menus. Bluecurve was upgraded in Red Hat Linux 9 and was extended to more areas of Operating System, including the menu and layout of the desktop. NPTL – Native POSIX Thread Library was the first introduction of new threading  technology  for Linux. This library provided performance improvement and increased scalability for processors.
Features contd…. Openoffice.org office suite for creation of documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Mozilla web browser, email client, address book, HTML composer . Ximian Evolution TM email client , calender and contact manager. CUPS  for drag and drop printing capabilities. Upgraded core components: Linux kernel 2.4.20, GCC  3.2.1, GNU libc 2.3 (with NPTL), web server powered by Apache Server 2.0.

RED HAT ENTERPRISE LINUX 5 RHEL  5 was released in March 2007. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 is based on the Linux 2.6.18 kernel and  includes approximately 1200 software components.  A large number of open source server applications are provided, including: A full suite of network services (DHCP, DNS, firewall, VPN, etc). Apache web server. MySQL and PostgreSQL databases. File/print servers for FTP, NFS and CIFS (Samba). Remote access services (SSH, VNC).
RED HAT ENTERPRISE LINUX 5 - features VIRTUALIZATION:  virtualization was provided in all RHEL server products and optionally available  for desktop products. Storage and Extended server virtualization are provided with RHEL advanced platform. Red Hat network supports virtualized guest operating system . KERNEL & PERFORMANCE: Based on Linux 2.6.18  kernel. Optimized for multi core processors. Deployment and performance tools, including SystemTap. Advanced I/O performance and virtualization technologies.
Features contd… SECURITY: SELinux enhancement include Multi-level security and targeted policies for all services. SEtroubleshooter GUI simplifies SELinux management.
