MEDIA STUDIES –
OPENING SEQUENCE
EVALUATION
In this PowerPoint presentation, I
will be evaluating my opening
sequence whilst comparing it to
films of the corresponding genre
IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS – HOW IT LINKS TO
OTHER FILMS OF THE SAME GENRE
 The genre associated with my opening sequence is thriller; the
ways in which I challenged this genre was through various
instances incorporating sound and editing techniques. This is
common in other thriller categorized motion pictures such as
Taken, starring Liam Neeson. My opening sequence relates to
thrillers such as this through the plot referring to the danger
inflicted on another character. Through rapid shot transitions and
the use of non-diagetic sound, the genre can be enhanced. The
soundtrack used in the opening sequence is low in pitch, quick in
tempo and involves strong/heavy use of percussion to create
tension.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS – HOW IT
CHALLENGES AND LINKS TO FILMS OF THE SAME
GENRE
 One Factor that makes my thriller production different to others is the
location. The location in which my sequence was filmed was in a
park, rather than a centre of a famous city or a famous building or
structure.
 The title ‘Hidden’ describes an object being hidden. The fact that the
object is hidden suggests that someone is looking for it or it has been
taken by someone, portraying a thriller.
 The setting is in a secluded area with little people to see a criminal
act or chase between two people.
 The camerawork is fast and the takes are shorts to create tension. A
key element of a thriller film.
 The story is about an object being stolen and danger being inflicted
on another character.
2) HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT REPRESENT
SPECIFIC SOCIAL GROUPS?
 Class – The class of each character is both made clear via the
clothing. The lower class character wears a hoodie, ragged trousers
and trainers in comparison to jeans, a polo shirt, jacket and suede
shoes worn by the middle-upper class character.
 Age – The younger character is portrayed as the more
vulnerable, innocent character, which is used to strengthen the power
of the protagonist.
 Gender – The older male (lower class character) is portrayed as the
more powerful individual.
This is true of most thrillers. What makes it different to others is that it is
a male as the weaker character rather than a female
3) WHAT MEDIA INSTITUTIONS WOULD DISTRIBUTE
YOUR PRODUCT AND WHY?
 The genre of my opening sequence is thriller. Thrillers tend to be
at the higher budget end of the film making process. Due to the
demand of a higher budget, it would be more likely for a larger US
distributor to do the job of raising public awareness of the product.
A small independent distributor in the UK would lack the market
power and financial backing to achieve the aim of exposing the
film to millions of people. An example of a distributor that would
link to the genre of my film would be Warner Brothers.
4) WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCES FOR YOUR
MEDIA PRODUCT
 The genre of the film is thriller. This genre tends to attract the
older, male demographic.
The film depicts
excitement, short
takes and an
unconcluded ending
which tends to
attract the male eye
when in a film.
