4. “Weekend” Getaway
“Absolutely breathtaking!” I screamed every time we visited a new beach in Lampung. My husband and
I decided to go to Lampung for my school term break holiday. I had a two week break for Term 3;
October 2-16, 2015. At first I was skeptical that we could go on any holidays as Emma, my daughter was
not on her school holiday. Despite all that, we initially agreed on going there for a weekend gateway.
So, off we went to Merak seaport on Friday night on October 9. We arrived in Bakauheni at 2 AM where
we stayed at my aunt’s house.
The next morning we woke up at 6 o’clock. We only slept for 4 hours; yet we were just excited of going
to any beaches. “When can we go to the beach mom?” asked my daughter constantly. “After we finish
cooking so we can bring some food to eat there,” I answered. At 1 o’clock we went to Minang Rua
beach. It took us 30 minutes to go there by car. The road was pretty adventurous as we went up and
down through steep hills and cliffs everywhere. But the view was simply mind-blowing! The white sand
beach with coconut trees lining up the shore was tremendously wonderful. And it’s free. Unlike Ancol
beach in Jakarta where you have to pay for

5. playing in the not-so-clean-beach, Minang Rua beach is a clean and ticket-free beach. My daughter with
her cousin, Vani just stormed to the beach as soon as they changed their swim suits. My husband kept
guard of them. Lindang, my cousin, was straight away brought her twin daughters into the beach too.
Her husband attended their first son, Joshua, who was too excited with getting wet. My aunt and Uli,
my cousin, went beachcombing looking for pumice stones. She said she needed those to clean up her
charred pots and pans. I was busy taking photos of the views and them playing. Only when I thought I
had enough photos then I jumped in to the waves. We stayed there for 4 hours. We noticed there were
not any facilities for us to take shower. Luckily Lindang’s husband knew someone who lives there; so we
had our bath at their house.
The second day of our stay we went to two places; Menara Siger and Banding Beach. At 6 o’clock off we
went to Menara Siger. This time there were only my husbnd, Emma, Vani, Shelsy, my cousin, and I.
Menara Siger is situated not far from Bakauheni seaport. It is a landmark for Lampung province. The
tower ‘wears’ a tiara-like shape on its top with 9 points which resembles 9 languages in Lampung. It is
110m above the sea level which gives us an overwhelming view. We could see some of the smaller
island on tip of Sumatera island with ferries coming in to Bakauheni seaport or coming out of the port
going to Merak to Java island. The kids had some food for breakfast. My husband and I just had coffee.
After that we went back home so we could prepare for our next trip to another beach.

6. The second beach we visited is called Banding beach. We left home at 1 o’clock and arrived there
around 2:30. The trip took one and half hours. The road was not as adventurous as the Minang Rua
beach as it is closer to the city. Instead of steep cliffs, we passed a market, government offices and
schools. Banding beach is in Kalianda, South Lampung. It is as remarkable as the first beach. What more
interesting was there is a fresh water spring amongst those black gigantic rocks by the beach. It looked
as clear as a whistle. My aunt still insisted in going to those ticket-free beaches. “I live near the sea why
would I pay money for a swim in the beach? To me, that just doesn’t make sense!” she explained. Well,
she got some points though. So we chose the ticket-free spot. This time the beach doesn’t have white
sand. It has black sand! I could totally picture the huge wave of Tsunami just hit the beach in 1883 after
the explosion of Krakatoa mountain. Could that be the reason why the sand is black? The kids just
jumped into the sea and played with the friendly waves. They brought a ball along so they could play
ball in the sea. How daring! While we were busy swimming, a dog came to our picnic spot and ate some
snacks. So I hurriedly went back and put the snacks into some containers. Apparently the kids, Emma,
Vani and Joshua didn’t put their snacks back to its container. They just left it on the mat. My aunt joined
us swimming. Uli couldn’t join us this time because she had to go back to her dormitory. She goes to a
catholic school where she stays in the dormitory with strict rules. Lindang’s husband didn’t come with

7. us because of work. So Shelsy was helping Lindang with the twins. I was attending Joshua. He was in
trouble because of the ball. He got tantrums which only led him another trouble. Oh well, he needs to
learn to share anyway. Most of us enjoyed our swim today. We only spent couple of hours in Banding
beach. We arrived home at 7 o’clock.
The third morning we didn’t have our morning walk to Siger. We walked just to buy breakfast, instead.
We had nasi uduk called Nasi Uduk Pak Aceng. It’s pretty popular in the area and I could see many
people actually came and bought the food. So my husband thought, let’s just buy that for breakfast. We
did. The taste was not as I expected. It was not even near the taste of the real nasi uduk. We were kind
of a bit disappointed. They should just let the Betawi people cook nasi uduk.
The third beach was Wartawan Beach. We heard there was a hot water spring in the beach so we
thought we could give it a go. This time there were only my husband, Emma, Vani, my aunt, Shelsy and I.
The travel took one and a half hours too like the trip to Banding beach. Apparently the location is not
too far from the Banding beach. We didn’t go through the same route though. We went through a
banana farm! Yup, there were whole lots of banana trees everywhere. It was a winding road which we
enjoyed it too. After the ups and the downs, we then reached a flat road with white beaches on our left

8. side and picturesque hills on our right side. How could anyone resist living in a place where you can see
the beach from your veranda and stunning hills from your kitchen? But when I saw the Tsunami
warning signs everywhere near the beach, I guess I could see why. We finally arrived in Wartawan
beach. It looked abandoned. No one was there. We could see there used to be a playground spot for
children. Now all the equipment was gone, rusty and broken. We checked the beach but there were too
many corals and it was just too deep for kids to play. We decided not to swim at the beach. We still
couldn’t locate the hot water spring. We climbed up a hill near the beach. We thought maybe the hot
water spring is on top of the hill. Half of the trek we stopped. My husband said he would go up to check.
There we could see the bluish sea with rocky corals. If I were a good swimmer I would have jumped into
the ocean right there. “There was nothing on the top. Maybe the hot water spring is not on this beach,”
said my husband. So we went down. My aunt was still curious because she was so sure that the hot
water spring is in this beach. She walked around the hill. We followed her but the kids were already
whining. I told them to be patient. My aunt was right. She found the hot water spring! They were hiding
under the rocky corals. We could see the bubbling hot water literally! Wow! Another striking view was
just right in front of us. The smoky steam flying from a small cave amongst the corals caught our
attention. We felt a bit terrified in an instance knowing there is an active volcano somewhere beneath
our feet. Gosh! I took lots of photos there. After we had enough exploring the hot water, we moved to a
different beach.

9. The fourth beach was Canti Beach. It’s actually quite near the Wartawan beach. But another
disappointment came to us. The beach was very deep. There was even a sign that said “Only
good swimmers can jump in.” Oh no! Because of that so we went back to Banding Beach. We
swam there until sun set. We witnessed that glorious, magnificent sun setting before our eyes.
Simply splendid. How grateful we were to be able to see that with our loved ones. We left the
Banding beach when it was already dark.
The fourth day we went to Belebuk Beach. As usual we left home at 1 o’clock because we
waited Vani and Shelsy to arrive from their schools. My aunt said the beach was just behind
our home, just behind that hill. She said it like it was really near. She said, “It is only 6
kilometers. You guys can just walk. It’s a nice weather and you could exercise along the way,
right?” she described. We went there by ojek instead. The ojek drivers asked for Rp. 20.000 per
trip. I asked them if they could come back and pick us up. They agreed. So off we went to the
beach. The journey was just unbelievably dangerous. Not only was it a bumpy, rough and
potholed road but also damaged. Big rocks just scattered on those coarse road. But the view!
Wow! I could even see a perfectly-shaped hill that looked like a pyramid in Egypt

10. I took a lot of selfies. Emma and Vani decided to collect sea shells so they went beachcombing.
They found various sea shells. We had our snacks whenever we felt tired. Emma and Vani
practiced their swimming. My husband taught Shelsy how to dive. Me? I was taking their photos
and had a little bit of swimming. We only spent couple of hours there. At 5 o’clock we got ready
to be picked up by our ojek drivers. We gave them extra in the end because the hard journey
they had to take and the precautions they made to keep us safe.
On public holiday, October 14 we were then on board in Prima Nusantara ferry heading to
Merak. We felt absolutely ecstatic for our holiday. It was supposed to be our weekend gateway,
we spent four days instead. We waved goodbye to the beautiful Menara Siger on our ferry.
We’ll see you again for sure.
