The eagle has the longest lifespan of its species but must undergo a difficult process of renewal to survive past middle age. As it reaches its 40s, its talons and beak become less effective for hunting. To renew itself, the eagle flies to a mountaintop over 150 days and knocks out its beak and talons before regrowing them. It then molts its old feathers, allowing it to live another 30 years through this process of rebirth.
