Capernaum was an important biblical city that was the home and ministry center of Jesus. According to the Gospels, Jesus lived and taught in Capernaum, where he healed many people including Peter's mother-in-law and a Roman centurion's servant. Jesus chose Capernaum as the center of his ministry in Galilee after leaving Nazareth, likely because his first disciples Peter and Andrew lived there. Archaeological excavations have revealed a synagogue from the time of Jesus with thick walls where he taught.

1. The town Capernaum is cited in the Gospel of Luke where it was reported to have
been the home of the apostles Peter, Andrew, James and John, as well as the tax
collector Matthew.
In Matthew 4:13 the town was reported to have been the home of Jesus.
According to Luke 4:31-44, Jesus taught in the synagogue in Capernaum on Sabbath.
Jesus then healed a man who had the spirit of an unclean devil and healed a fever in
Simon Peter's mother-in-law.
According to Luke 7:1-10, it is also the place where a Roman Centurion asked Jesus to
heal his servant. Capernaum is also mentioned in the Gospel of Mark (2:1), it is the
location of the famous healing of the paralytic lowered through the roof to reach
Jesus.
According to the Synoptic Gospels, Jesus selected this town as the center of his
public ministry in the Galilee after he left the small mountainous hamlet of Nazareth
(Matthew 4:12-17).
Capernaum has no obvious advantages over any other city in the area, so he probably
chose it because it was the home of his first disciples, Simon (Peter) and Andrew.

6. • The Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes (also
known as the Church of the Multiplication) is a church in Tabgha
(ancient Heptapegon) on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee.
• The miraculous feeding of five thousand people is described in Mark
6:30-44, just before Jesus walks on water. The Gospel account of
the loaves and fishes does not specify where it took place; only that
it was in a "remote place" (6:32,35) on the shores of Galilee.
• According to Mark's account, Jesus and his disciples had gone out
in a boat to this remote place for some peace and quiet, but the
crowds ran ahead "from all the towns" and met him when he landed.
By then it was dinnertime and they were not in a village where food
could easily be bought, so Jesus fed them all by miraculously
multiplying his disciples' five loaves and two fishes.

8. Under the altar in the front of the church is a stone said to be the one on which Jesus
laid the miraculously-multiplied meal. In front of it is a fine mosaic of a two fishes
flanking a basket of bread. On the right is a glass cover protecting the remnants of the
foundations of the ancient church.
