The eagle has the longest lifespan of its species at 70 years. However, eagles around 40 years old must decide to either die or undergo a painful 150 day process of renewal. This process involves the eagle flying to a mountain top, knocking its beak against a rock to remove it, waiting for a new beak to grow, and then removing its talons and old feathers. After five months, the eagle emerges reborn and lives another 30 years. The change process allows eagles to shed old burdens and take advantage of more time.
