Real World Leadership Interview
This interview was conducted with a mid level department
manager for Northrop Grumman, responsible for 130 Research,
Test, and Engineering employees, who execute the
organization’s statement of work in the Aerospace industry.
Respondent’s remarks are italicized and bold throughout this
presentation.
2
Leadership Defined
Guiding a group of people towards a common goal or task
“Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a
group of individuals to achieve a common goal” (Northouse,
2016).
Upon completion of the task or goal things have changed or
improved… ideally for the better
Leaders must motivate followers to accomplish goals; which
will improve performance and satisfaction (Northouse, 2016).
Question 1a: How do you define leadership?
3
Effective Leadership
The goal or task doesn’t necessarily need to be successful for an
effective leader to be successful
Effective leadership does not require successful goal
achievement. Process complexity, event uncertainty, and testing
can cause failure regardless of effective leadership
(Edmondson, 2011).
Learn from failure to identify mistakes and become a stronger,
more unified team
It is important to clearly communicate the vision, goal, or cause
being worked toward and create a culture that fosters a sense of
belonging, value, mutual trust, and respect (Fostering
Leadership, 2013).
Question 1b: What makes one an effective leader?
4
Management vs. Leadership
Management:
Setting the expectations, providing the team with polices, tools,
and the roadmap to accomplish the goal
Managers focus on things like “planning, budgeting, organizing,
staffing, controlling, and problem solving” (Kotter, 2013).
Leadership:
Motivating the team to follow the road map and accomplish the
goal
Leaders focus on creating and communicating vision,
motivating and inspiring others to work toward that vision, and
guiding others through change (Zaleznik, 2004).
Question 2: Do you make a distinction between management and
leadership? If so, what is it?
5
Followership
Be respectful of the team and the leader
Followership includes serving “as team players who take
satisfaction in helping to further a cause, an idea, a product, a
service, or, more rarely, a person” (Kelley, 1988).
Provide input and feedback both positive and negative to the
team
Effective followers are often “no” people and suggest
alternative ways to do things (Fostering Leadership, 2013).
Pay attention and stay focused on the goal or task
Leaders cultivate effective followers by training followers to
think critically, act independently, and build credibility.
(Kelley, 1988)
Question 3: What do you think is the role of the follower?
6
Future Challenges
Bridging generational gaps - 4 distinct generations
Leader’s Role:
Knowledge sharing and inclusion will be very important
Supportive leadership assists in “building camaraderie, respect,
trust, and liking” and communication will “create, nurture, and
sustain useful exchanges” (Northouse, 2016).
Organization’s Role:
Inform managers and provide awareness training
Leadership development programs should focus on examining
unconscious biases, generational communication, and flexibility
(Arsenault,2004).
Question 4: What are the significant challenges facing leaders
of the future?
7
Insights
Failure and Leadership:
“Only leaders can create and reinforce a culture that counteracts
the blame game and makes people feel both comfortable with
and responsible for surfacing and learning from failures”
(Edmondson, 2011).
Followership:
In order to be a good leader, you must first be a good follower.
Good followers actively support their leader, are passionate and
committed. They “can make or break a leader by influencing
how and what goals get achieved” (Good Leader, 2016).
Multi-generational Leadership:
Baby Boomers prefer “caring, competent, and honest leader
characteristics”, while Xers and Nexters want leaders who
“challenge the system and create change” (Arsenault, 2004).
Identify 2 – 3 significant insights gained into effective
leadership

Foundation of Organizational Leadership
Dr. William Behrens
Purpose
The purpose of this interview is to collect information on
leadership from Commander (CDR) Mosi’s perspective. CDR
Mosi is a naval flight officer and the Executive Officer of Naval
Station Activity mid-south in Millington, TN.
Interview Questions
1
2
Do you make a distinction between management and leadership?
If so, what is it?
3
What do you think is the role of the follower?
How do you define leadership, and what makes one an effective
leader?
4
What are the significant challenges facing leaders of the future?
I define leadership as having the ability to inspire others to
greatness. As a leader I set a vision for them, I expect them to
meet that vision while encouraging their individual talent to
meet that vision. What makes an effective leader is having a
vision and setting that vision for individuals, and serving those
that I lead to meet that vision. A servant leader “concern
himself with the well-being of others, empowers, and develops
others towards self-actualization, empathizes with and heals
others, and behaves in an ethical manner. (Greenleaf, 2008).
How do you define leadership, and what makes one an effective
leader?
For example; I like to use a fire analogy: As a leader I need to
tell followers that I need a blue flame (that’s the vision), and I
have people that I know can give me a blue flame. Fire requires
three elements (Oxygen, heat, and fuel source) One follower is
oxygen, the other is heat and another one is fuel (wood). A blue
flame requires lots of oxygen, then I will ask a lot of my
oxygen, on the other hand for an orange flame I need lots of
heat but little oxygen, all the time inspiring everyone to meet
that vision.
How do you define leadership, and what makes one an effective
leader? (cont)
Absolutely, management is the ability to having a check list and
meet those checklists and pushing out those checklists. A
manager can go out there and task you all day long by email,
whether you attain it or not is not his problem, he don’t care,
just get it done.
Leadership is step above of management, is having those
checklist and inspiring individuals to meet those check list. A
leader will give the vision, give you the check list and then ask
if you know how to accomplish it, if you don’t, let me help you
get there, let me serve you, do you have the tools you need to
reach that goal, what’s your road block and remove road blocks.
“Leadership and management are different concepts that
overlap” (Northouse, 2016, p.17).
Do you make a distinction between management and leadership?
If so, what is it?
The role of the follower is to make sure they understand the
task at hand, what is the vision, they need to have the ability
express what their road blocks are. This is not to be confuse
with excuses, these need to be legitimate road blocks. If you
understand the vision and how to attain that vision.
“effective followers are recognized by certain attributes which
include; "1) They manage themselves well, 2) They are
committed to the organization and to a purpose, multiple, or
person outside themselves, 3) They build their competence and
focus their efforts to maximum impact, 4) They are courageous,
honest, and credible" (Kelly, 1988, p. 144).
What do you think is the role of the follower?
The one that comes to mind now, is the ability to bridge values
with generational gaps. Work ethics, coming to work every day
and doing the work diligently is ethic. How you get that job
done changes over generations. Back in the days everything was
written by hand. Now everything is done by computers, it was
the next generation that brought computers online. Now the old
school guy says, I need you to hand write this. But the new
school guys say, I don’t need to write it by hand. I can use a
computer.
They need to be able to grasp the values and then
implement those values with their innovations of the day. The
millennial right now, they don’t understand things that the gen
X understand; example; because if you show a cassette to them
right now they don’t know what that is. We have evolved so
much that we have an MP3 player.
What are the significant challenges facing leaders of the future?
During the interview CDR Mosi highlighted some of the
approaches, mindset, and theories we’ve seen in our literature.
He clearly defines the difference between Leader and follower,
and make a point that a leader is step above a manager, meaning
that a leader needs to know how to manage and understand the
difference. “Leadership and management are different concepts
that overlap” (Northouse, 2016, p.17). He also touched on
serving followers/subordinates, which relates to the servant-
leader mindset. I found the fire analogy interesting and
understood the connection. Leaders must assist followers
ensuring that they have what they need to succeed by showing
the path and removing obstacles, this is the path-goal theory.

LEADERSHIP INTERVIEW
WITH HOWARD EVERETT
FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF
SMFGLOBAL
Leadership is serving those who are responsible to you in a
command or company setting. The most basic example is
parenting. As a parent the greater service provided to each child
in development, discipline, nutrition and creativity, the greater
chance each individual will have at success when it comes to
autonomy and self dependence. If the leader neglects to serve
the subordinate in one or more crucial area the mission is
corrupted.
“Leadership is about the way people behave in organizations,
and effective leaders are those who meet the needs of their
followers, pay careful attention to group processes, calm
anxieties and arouse hopes and aspirations, and know how to
liberate human energy and inspire people to positive action.”
(Northouse, 2016, p295)
How do you define leadership, and what makes one an effective
leader?
“
”
Leadership requires creative problem solving and risk taking on
behalf of the ones being lead. All Leaders are managers but not
all managers are truly leaders. Many managers skate to the
minimum standard and only do things that benefit themselves.
Leaders serve the team and individual followers to the point
where they are free to be their best in every way.
“The overriding function of management is to provide order and
consistency to organizations, whereas the primary function of
leadership is to produce change and movement.” (Northouse,
2016, p.13)
Do you make a distinction between management and leadership?
If so, what is it?
“
”
Followers must achieve their assignments in a manner that
builds the team and forwards the mission. Sometimes a
follower must be cut from the team to get the job done. The
follower is only responsible for his own work where the leader
is responsible for her work and the entire team mission as well.
A true leader will always raise up competent leaders after his or
her own image. Some followers were never meant to lead.
Some people are content with a life of wage labor and a cold
beer.
Northouse states, “most of servant leader behaviors focus
directly on recognizing follower contributions and helping them
realize their human potential.” (2016, p.236)
What do you think is the role of the follower?
“
”
Leaders of the future will face more litigation and social
hostility as parenting and corporate structures are stigmatized.
As respect for authority is diminished across age and
socioeconomic spectrums the role of leadership will be more
and more like a camp counselor and less like a boss or Sergeant.
Even though her tools will become limited because of legal
restraints the leader still has to get the mission complete and
find and develop others to lead in the future. It is not getting
any easier.
“Changes in culture have meant followers demand more from
leaders, and leaders have responded.” (Northouse, 2016, p.11)
What are the significant challenges facing leaders of the future?
“
”
The most important lesson I ever learned is never ask anyone to
do what I would not or have not done myself. People can smell
hypocrisy. The true leader is willing to get dirty, bloody and
take risks along with his or her employees.
“A collaborative climate is one in which members can stay
problem focused, listen to and understand one another, feel free
to take risks, and be willing to compensate for one another.”
(Northouse, 2016, p.370)
What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned and
how is it valuable?
“
”
The most important decisions I make in my organization are
budget and staffing related. Every position in my organization
except mine are renegotiated annually. No one can go to sleep
at the wheel.
The outcomes of servant leadership are follower performance
and growth, organizational performance, and societal impact.”
(Northouse, 2016, p. 236)
What are the most important decisions you make as a leader of
your organization?
“
”
The one characteristic I believe every leader needs is passion. It
is the drive to better my world and serve my neighbors that
fuels our vision at smfglobal. Without a passion for the project
or the client’s well being our work becomes stale and repetitive.
We must constantly sharpen our tools and rest on a regular basis
to keep the maximum amount of energy flowing to the heart of
our endeavor. Passion is the fuel to success.
Northouse cites House stating, “the personality characteristics
of a charismatic leader include being dominant, having a strong
desire to influence others, being self-confident, and having a
strong sense of own’s own moral values.” (2016, p.164)
What is one characteristic that you believe every leader should
possess?
“

Real World LeadershipElaine McCallen Brandman University O.docx

  • 1. Real World Leadership Elaine McCallen | Brandman University | OLCU 600 | January 27, 2018 Real World Leadership Interview This interview was conducted with a mid level department manager for Northrop Grumman, responsible for 130 Research, Test, and Engineering employees, who execute the organization’s statement of work in the Aerospace industry. Respondent’s remarks are italicized and bold throughout this presentation. 2 Leadership Defined Guiding a group of people towards a common goal or task “Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal” (Northouse, 2016). Upon completion of the task or goal things have changed or improved… ideally for the better Leaders must motivate followers to accomplish goals; which will improve performance and satisfaction (Northouse, 2016).
  • 2. Question 1a: How do you define leadership? 3 Effective Leadership The goal or task doesn’t necessarily need to be successful for an effective leader to be successful Effective leadership does not require successful goal achievement. Process complexity, event uncertainty, and testing can cause failure regardless of effective leadership (Edmondson, 2011). Learn from failure to identify mistakes and become a stronger, more unified team It is important to clearly communicate the vision, goal, or cause being worked toward and create a culture that fosters a sense of belonging, value, mutual trust, and respect (Fostering Leadership, 2013). Question 1b: What makes one an effective leader? 4 Management vs. Leadership Management: Setting the expectations, providing the team with polices, tools, and the roadmap to accomplish the goal Managers focus on things like “planning, budgeting, organizing, staffing, controlling, and problem solving” (Kotter, 2013).
  • 3. Leadership: Motivating the team to follow the road map and accomplish the goal Leaders focus on creating and communicating vision, motivating and inspiring others to work toward that vision, and guiding others through change (Zaleznik, 2004). Question 2: Do you make a distinction between management and leadership? If so, what is it? 5 Followership Be respectful of the team and the leader Followership includes serving “as team players who take satisfaction in helping to further a cause, an idea, a product, a service, or, more rarely, a person” (Kelley, 1988). Provide input and feedback both positive and negative to the team Effective followers are often “no” people and suggest alternative ways to do things (Fostering Leadership, 2013). Pay attention and stay focused on the goal or task Leaders cultivate effective followers by training followers to think critically, act independently, and build credibility. (Kelley, 1988)
  • 4. Question 3: What do you think is the role of the follower? 6 Future Challenges Bridging generational gaps - 4 distinct generations Leader’s Role: Knowledge sharing and inclusion will be very important Supportive leadership assists in “building camaraderie, respect, trust, and liking” and communication will “create, nurture, and sustain useful exchanges” (Northouse, 2016). Organization’s Role: Inform managers and provide awareness training Leadership development programs should focus on examining unconscious biases, generational communication, and flexibility (Arsenault,2004). Question 4: What are the significant challenges facing leaders of the future? 7 Insights Failure and Leadership: “Only leaders can create and reinforce a culture that counteracts the blame game and makes people feel both comfortable with and responsible for surfacing and learning from failures” (Edmondson, 2011). Followership: In order to be a good leader, you must first be a good follower. Good followers actively support their leader, are passionate and committed. They “can make or break a leader by influencing how and what goals get achieved” (Good Leader, 2016). Multi-generational Leadership: Baby Boomers prefer “caring, competent, and honest leader
  • 5. characteristics”, while Xers and Nexters want leaders who “challenge the system and create change” (Arsenault, 2004). • 7. 2 Do you make a distinction between management and leadership? If so, what is it? 3 What do you think is the role of the follower? How do you define leadership, and what makes one an effective leader? 4 What are the significant challenges facing leaders of the future? I define leadership as having the ability to inspire others to greatness. As a leader I set a vision for them, I expect them to meet that vision while encouraging their individual talent to meet that vision. What makes an effective leader is having a vision and setting that vision for individuals, and serving those that I lead to meet that vision. A servant leader “concern himself with the well-being of others, empowers, and develops others towards self-actualization, empathizes with and heals others, and behaves in an ethical manner. (Greenleaf, 2008).
  • 8. How do you define leadership, and what makes one an effective leader? For example; I like to use a fire analogy: As a leader I need to tell followers that I need a blue flame (that’s the vision), and I have people that I know can give me a blue flame. Fire requires three elements (Oxygen, heat, and fuel source) One follower is oxygen, the other is heat and another one is fuel (wood). A blue flame requires lots of oxygen, then I will ask a lot of my oxygen, on the other hand for an orange flame I need lots of heat but little oxygen, all the time inspiring everyone to meet that vision. How do you define leadership, and what makes one an effective leader? (cont) Absolutely, management is the ability to having a check list and meet those checklists and pushing out those checklists. A manager can go out there and task you all day long by email, whether you attain it or not is not his problem, he don’t care, just get it done. Leadership is step above of management, is having those checklist and inspiring individuals to meet those check list. A leader will give the vision, give you the check list and then ask
  • 9. if you know how to accomplish it, if you don’t, let me help you get there, let me serve you, do you have the tools you need to reach that goal, what’s your road block and remove road blocks. “Leadership and management are different concepts that overlap” (Northouse, 2016, p.17). Do you make a distinction between management and leadership? If so, what is it? The role of the follower is to make sure they understand the task at hand, what is the vision, they need to have the ability express what their road blocks are. This is not to be confuse with excuses, these need to be legitimate road blocks. If you understand the vision and how to attain that vision. “effective followers are recognized by certain attributes which include; "1) They manage themselves well, 2) They are committed to the organization and to a purpose, multiple, or person outside themselves, 3) They build their competence and focus their efforts to maximum impact, 4) They are courageous, honest, and credible" (Kelly, 1988, p. 144). What do you think is the role of the follower? The one that comes to mind now, is the ability to bridge values with generational gaps. Work ethics, coming to work every day and doing the work diligently is ethic. How you get that job done changes over generations. Back in the days everything was written by hand. Now everything is done by computers, it was the next generation that brought computers online. Now the old
  • 10. school guy says, I need you to hand write this. But the new school guys say, I don’t need to write it by hand. I can use a computer. They need to be able to grasp the values and then implement those values with their innovations of the day. The millennial right now, they don’t understand things that the gen X understand; example; because if you show a cassette to them right now they don’t know what that is. We have evolved so much that we have an MP3 player. What are the significant challenges facing leaders of the future? During the interview CDR Mosi highlighted some of the approaches, mindset, and theories we’ve seen in our literature. He clearly defines the difference between Leader and follower, and make a point that a leader is step above a manager, meaning that a leader needs to know how to manage and understand the difference. “Leadership and management are different concepts that overlap” (Northouse, 2016, p.17). He also touched on serving followers/subordinates, which relates to the servant- leader mindset. I found the fire analogy interesting and understood the connection. Leaders must assist followers ensuring that they have what they need to succeed by showing the path and removing obstacles, this is the path-goal theory. Conclusion References Greenleaf, R. K. (2008). The servant as leader. Westfield, IN: The Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership Kelley, R.E. (1988). In praise of followers. Harvard Business Review, 66(6), 142-148
  • 11. Northouse, P. G. (2016). Leadership: Theory and practice (7th ed.). Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage LEADERSHIP INTERVIEW WITH HOWARD EVERETT FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF SMFGLOBAL Leadership is serving those who are responsible to you in a command or company setting. The most basic example is parenting. As a parent the greater service provided to each child in development, discipline, nutrition and creativity, the greater chance each individual will have at success when it comes to autonomy and self dependence. If the leader neglects to serve the subordinate in one or more crucial area the mission is corrupted. “Leadership is about the way people behave in organizations, and effective leaders are those who meet the needs of their followers, pay careful attention to group processes, calm anxieties and arouse hopes and aspirations, and know how to liberate human energy and inspire people to positive action.” (Northouse, 2016, p295) How do you define leadership, and what makes one an effective leader? “ ” Leadership requires creative problem solving and risk taking on behalf of the ones being lead. All Leaders are managers but not
  • 12. all managers are truly leaders. Many managers skate to the minimum standard and only do things that benefit themselves. Leaders serve the team and individual followers to the point where they are free to be their best in every way. “The overriding function of management is to provide order and consistency to organizations, whereas the primary function of leadership is to produce change and movement.” (Northouse, 2016, p.13) Do you make a distinction between management and leadership? If so, what is it? “ ” Followers must achieve their assignments in a manner that builds the team and forwards the mission. Sometimes a follower must be cut from the team to get the job done. The follower is only responsible for his own work where the leader is responsible for her work and the entire team mission as well. A true leader will always raise up competent leaders after his or her own image. Some followers were never meant to lead. Some people are content with a life of wage labor and a cold beer. Northouse states, “most of servant leader behaviors focus directly on recognizing follower contributions and helping them realize their human potential.” (2016, p.236) What do you think is the role of the follower? “ ” Leaders of the future will face more litigation and social hostility as parenting and corporate structures are stigmatized. As respect for authority is diminished across age and socioeconomic spectrums the role of leadership will be more and more like a camp counselor and less like a boss or Sergeant.
  • 13. Even though her tools will become limited because of legal restraints the leader still has to get the mission complete and find and develop others to lead in the future. It is not getting any easier. “Changes in culture have meant followers demand more from leaders, and leaders have responded.” (Northouse, 2016, p.11) What are the significant challenges facing leaders of the future? “ ” The most important lesson I ever learned is never ask anyone to do what I would not or have not done myself. People can smell hypocrisy. The true leader is willing to get dirty, bloody and take risks along with his or her employees. “A collaborative climate is one in which members can stay problem focused, listen to and understand one another, feel free to take risks, and be willing to compensate for one another.” (Northouse, 2016, p.370) What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned and how is it valuable? “ ” The most important decisions I make in my organization are budget and staffing related. Every position in my organization except mine are renegotiated annually. No one can go to sleep at the wheel. The outcomes of servant leadership are follower performance and growth, organizational performance, and societal impact.” (Northouse, 2016, p. 236) What are the most important decisions you make as a leader of your organization?
  • 14. “ ” The one characteristic I believe every leader needs is passion. It is the drive to better my world and serve my neighbors that fuels our vision at smfglobal. Without a passion for the project or the client’s well being our work becomes stale and repetitive. We must constantly sharpen our tools and rest on a regular basis to keep the maximum amount of energy flowing to the heart of our endeavor. Passion is the fuel to success. Northouse cites House stating, “the personality characteristics of a charismatic leader include being dominant, having a strong desire to influence others, being self-confident, and having a strong sense of own’s own moral values.” (2016, p.164) What is one characteristic that you believe every leader should possess? “ ” REFERENCES Northouse, P.G.
