Jam3 is a digital agency in Toronto that worked on the Vikings project to evaluate React and F1. F1 is an animation library that uses path finding to describe UI transitions like driving between locations. It works across platforms and with React. Chiefs are components that tell other components what state to be in. States and transitions are defined separately for consistency and testability. F1 is moving toward better documentation, tooling, and integration with design tools.

For over a decade, most of us built web UIs operating under the assumption that servers would render mostly-static HTML, and we’d boil the ocean and free all client-side memory with every page load. This was a simple world, where the server-side was aware of the user’s intent and context.
Enter the Single Page Application (SPA) - there are all sorts of usability and performance, and scalability benefits that come along with building a web app this way, but there are also some serious challenges. There are some implicit assumptions that our users make about how apps should work, and we must work a bit harder in order to keep them intact. Take the “Back” and “Refresh” buttons, for example: in order for this to work as our users expect, we must keep certain elements of state serialized in the URL in order to avoid “breaking” this as we simulate a multi-page experience in a SPA.
Add in the concept of “server-side rendering”, where our asset serving layer sometimes needs browser details (i.e. viewport dimensions) in order to render the correct content, and state decisions become even more consequential and complex.
In this talk, I’ll outline four types of state
Navigation state
Persisted state
UI state
“Will be persisted” state
and provide examples for each. Along the way, we’ll start to assemble a framework of questions that you can ask yourself when encountering new pieces of state, to lead you down the right path(s).

Testing our applications is something we all do. Ahem, rather, it's something we all *wish* we did. In this chat, I'll introduce you to Behat (behat.org) (version 3!!!!): a behavior-driven-development (BDD) library that allows you to write functional tests against your application just by writing human-readable sentences/scenarios. To sweeten the deal these tests can be run in a real browser (via Selenium2) with just the flip of a switch. If you asked me to develop without Behat, I'd just retire. It's that sweet. By the end, you'll have everything you need to start functionally-testing with Behat in your new, or very old and ugly project.

Anko is a library that reduces boilerplate code in Android development using Kotlin. It has four main parts: Anko Commons, Anko Layouts, Anko SQLite, and Anko Coroutines. Anko Commons simplifies tasks like creating intents and dialogs. Anko Layouts allows defining UI with a DSL instead of XML for type safety and null safety. Anko SQLite helps with database operations. Anko Coroutines integrates coroutines into Android. The presentation compares code samples with and without Anko to demonstrate how it reduces boilerplate. Every URL visited from the Facebook iPhone app is done through a webview. Same with Twitter. Even if you don't have a mobile app, your website gets a lot of traffic from webviews. And yet, testing on webviews is challenging. There are significant performances differences between UIWebView vs WkWebView, and similarly for Android webview vs the new Chromium webview. And what about home screen apps?! In this talk, Steve Souders discusses the differences across webviews and how that affects performance of mobile web apps.
ES2015 workflows

It’s one thing to make design that’s easy on the eyes – but how about designs that are easy on the brain? How we see the world is incredibly complex – very little of the world is in focus at any one time, and our brain is required to do a lot of the heavy lifting to let us see what we see. JavaScript’s popularity has exploded over the last decade, taking it from a laughable scripting language to one that powers much of the web today. Because it’s so flexible and so easy to learn, it’s extremely popular with new developers looking to cut their teeth in programming. However, these strengths are also weaknesses, as it’s incredibly easy to write bad JavaScript without even knowing it.
A lot of these newer developers jump from “Hello, World!”, to TodoMVC in order to find the library that makes their life easier. By doing this, they skip over some of the important details of not only how JavaScript works, but also how to optimize its performance to ensure the best user experience.
The Chrome profiler is a very handy tool that not a lot of developers have experience with. In this talk, we’ll take a beginner’s look at the profiler tool and examine how to use it to best improve your web application, and identify bottlenecks in your code without having to rely only on console.log statements.

The average website loads over 1.5MBs of content per page, making over 75 requests. Many popular websites are serving over 5MBs just to load their homepages. And these numbers represent measurements taken AFTER compression is applied. The full weight of many popular websites is pushing 20+ MBs these days. In an era where performance truly matters to the end user experience, web developers need techniques to help curtail this bloat in data down the wire.
No matter how well you optimize, there is no better way to than to delete things you do not need. How does one determine what is essential to the user experience and what is not? One answer Chris posits is to develop a hyper-lightweight version of your website which will provide critical insights into your specific performance priorities. This is a process that he has leveraged on many projects, in particular at YouTube to reduce the size of the video watch page from 1.5MBs to 100KBs. In this talk, Chris will take real-world web pages and show techniques for dramatically reducing their page weight and for identifying areas to optimize, while outlining the key steps to doing this well.

Today, the environments that humans occupy in space are designed for survival. Humans are carefully shuttled to and from space, and during their relatively short stays, they are provided with minimum supplies to remain alive and able to perform experiments. As we begin to plan less for short visits and more for life in space (such as a six to eight month trip to Mars and beyond) the question becomes: What does human culture look like in space?
This talk will explore how human culture, design, and creativity might evolve as we begin to live in space, and the unique environmental conditions that might guide us in certain directions, just as the environment on Earth has. It will discuss space tourism, living in zero gravity, and some experiments in art and design that hint at future aesthetics.

CrowdStrike researchers have identified a HijackLoader (aka IDAT Loader) sample that employs sophisticated evasion techniques to enhance the complexity of the threat. HijackLoader, an increasingly popular tool among adversaries for deploying additional payloads and tooling, continues to evolve as its developers experiment and enhance its capabilities.
In their analysis of a recent HijackLoader sample, CrowdStrike researchers discovered new techniques designed to increase the defense evasion capabilities of the loader. The malware developer used a standard process hollowing technique coupled with an additional trigger that was activated by the parent process writing to a pipe. This new approach, called "Interactive Process Hollowing", has the potential to make defense evasion stealthier.
