Reaching the Age of Adolescence
What is adolescence?
• An adolescent is any person between ages 10
and 19.
• In societies the term adolescence is roughly
equivalent to the word teens (13-19 years).
• In girls, adolescence may begin earlier than
the boys.
• The human body undergoes several changes
during adolescence. These mark the onset of
puberty.
As boys go through puberty, the larynx gets bigger and the vocal cords lengthen and
thicken, so their voice gets deeper. Along with the larynx, the vocal cords grow
significantly longer and becomes thicker.
The growing voice box in boys can be seen as a protruding part of the throat called
Adam’s Apple.
Sweat Glands & Sebaceous
Glands
• During this time the secretion of sweat glands and sebaceous glands (oil glands)
increase. This results in acnes & pimples on face.
• It is necessary for teenagers because of the increased activity of sweat glands. All
parts of the body should be washed and cleaned everyday.
• Make sure to maintain Personal Hygiene.
Girls should take special care of cleanliness during the time of menstrual
flow.
They should keep track of their menstrual cycle and be prepared for the
onset of menstruation.
Healthy eating during
adolescence is
important as body
changes during this
time & affect an
individual's nutritional
and dietary needs.
Teens have a growth
spurt and an increase in
appetite and need
healthy foods to meet
their needs.
Physical Exercise • Teenagers need at least 60 minutes
of physical activity to maintain good
health and fitness, and for healthy
weight during growth.
This may include-
• Brisk walking.
• Running.
• Swimming.
• Cycling.
• Roller skating.
• Jumping rope.
• Dancing.
