White Paper - Data Warehouse GovernanceDavid Walker
An organisation that is embarking on a data warehousing project is undertaking a long-term development and maintenance programme of a computer system. This system will be critical to the organisation and cost a significant amount of money, therefore control of the system is vital. Governance defines the model the organisation will use to ensure optimal use and re- use of the data warehouse and enforcement of corporate policies (e.g. business design, technical design and application security) and ultimately derive value for money.
This paper has identified five sources of change to the system and the aspects of the system that these sources of change will influence in order to assist the organisation to develop standards and structures to support the development and maintenance of the solution. These standards and structures must then evolve, as the programme develops to meet its changing needs.
“Documentation is not understanding, process is not discipline, formality is not skill”1
The best governance must only be an aid to the development and not an end in itself. Data Warehouses are successful because of good understanding, discipline and the skill of those involved. On the other hand systems built to a template without understanding, discipline and skill will inevitably deliver a system that fails to meet the users’ needs and sooner rather than later will be left on the shelf, or maintained at a very high cost but with little real use.

The document discusses six key questions organizations should ask about data governance: 1) Do we have a government structure in place to oversee data governance? 2) How can we assess our current data governance situation? 3) What is our data governance strategy? 4) What is the value of our data? 5) What are our data vulnerabilities? 6) How can we measure progress in data governance? It provides details on each question, highlighting the importance of leadership, benchmarks, strategic planning, risk assessment, and metrics in developing an effective data governance program.
The document discusses best practices for data governance. It recommends establishing a data governance framework that defines common terminology, hierarchies, and change management processes. It also emphasizes integrating applications like ERP, EPM, BI, and data warehouses by mapping data relationships and dimensions in a centralized data governance solution. This enables a single version of truth and reduces data reconciliation work across various systems.

Adopting a Process-Driven Approach to Master Data ManagementSoftware AG
What is a lasting solution to the sea of errors, headaches, and losses caused by inconsistent and inaccurate master data such as customer and product records? This is the data that your business counts on to operate business processes and make decisions. But this data is often incomplete or in conflict because it resides in multiple IT systems. Master Data Management (MDM)'s programs are the solution to this problem, but these programs can fail without the investment and involvement of business managers.
Listen to Rob Karel, Forrester analyst, and Jignesh Shah from Software AG to learn about a new, process-driven approach to MDM and why it is a win-win for both business and IT managers.

The document discusses how investing in data quality can provide a significant return on investment for companies. It outlines five tenets that leading companies embrace to realize this ROI from quality data: 1) view data quality as a business issue, not just an IT issue, 2) establish an explicit data governance strategy, especially at the point of data entry, 3) use a third-party data provider to consolidate and cleanse data, 4) address the challenge of maintaining accurate data given the rapid rate of data changes, and 5) strive for a 360-degree view of customers and suppliers across the organization.
The C-level executives are puzzled rightfully, why CDI projects are so complex, time consuming and too expensive when the subject matter is simply the "CUSTOMER" data. Achieving nirvana for a robust CDI solution is far fetched given the maturity level at present of CDI/MDM technologies. It is in this context that this paper makes an attempt to provide a direction with golden rules [Best Practices], distilled with years of experience to smoothen any CDI implementation.
Objectives:
1) Discuss the challenges associated with customer data management

Enterprise Data Governance for Financial InstitutionsSheldon McCarthy
This document discusses data governance for financial institutions. It covers topics such as metadata management, master data management, data quality management, and data privacy and security. Data governance involves planning, defining standards, assigning accountability, classifying data, and managing data quality. It helps protect sensitive information and enables more effective data use. Master data management brings together business rules, procedures, roles, and policies to research and implement controls around an organization's data. Data quality management establishes roles, responsibilities, and business rules to address existing data problems and prevent potential issues.

White Paper - The Business Case For Business IntelligenceDavid Walker
This white paper looks at the business case that should lie behind the decision to build a data warehouse and provide a business intelligence solution.
There are three primary drivers for making the investment in a business intelligence solution
1. Measurement and management of the business process
2. Analysis of why things change in the business in order to react better in the future
3. Providing information for stakeholders
As a consequence of the investment there will also be a number of secondary benefits that will help to justify the investment and these are also discussed. Finally there are a number of ‘anti-drivers’ – reasons for not embarking on a business intelligence programme.

A Data-driven Maturity Model for Modernized, Automated, and Transformed ITbalejandre
This document presents a research-based maturity model for measuring organizations' progress in IT transformation. The model segments organizations into four levels of maturity based on surveys of 1,000 IT executives about their infrastructure, processes, and relationships. Only a small percentage have achieved the highest levels of modernized infrastructure, automated processes, and business-IT alignment needed for digital transformation. Higher maturity is correlated with improved agility, efficiency, innovation funding, and business outcomes. Adopting modern data center technologies, automated processes, and DevOps practices can help organizations progress to more mature states.

The 21st Century Sailor and Marine initiative focuses on several areas including readiness, safety, physical fitness, inclusion and continuum of service. One important aspect of readiness is eliminating sexual assault from the Navy and Marine Corps. While April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Navy's focus on preventing sexual assault does not stop. The initiative also embraces using technology, such as stress management apps, to support readiness. Physical fitness is another large component, and two Sailors have made headlines for their commitment to physical fitness standards through competing in triathlons.

Data Virtualization, a Strategic IT Investment to Build Modern Enterprise Dat...Denodo
This content was presented during the Smart Data Summit Dubai 2015 in the UAE on May 25, 2015, by Jesus Barrasa, Senior Solutions Architect at Denodo Technologies.
In the era of Big Data, IoT, Cloud and Social Media, Information Architects are forced to rethink how to tackle data management and integration in the enterprise. Traditional approaches based on data replication and rigid information models lack the flexibility to deal with this new hybrid reality. New data sources and an increasing variety of consuming applications, like mobile apps and SaaS, add more complexity to the problem of delivering the right data, in the right format, and at the right time to the business. Data Virtualization emerges in this new scenario as the key enabler of agile, maintainable and future-proof data architectures.

Information Rich, Knowledge Poor: Overcoming Insurers’ Data ConundrumDeloitte United States
The ability to effectively harvest and harness data across the enterprise is quickly emerging as a competitive differentiator in the financial services industry. In the insurance sector specifically, a number of pioneers are already making healthy strides toward mastering information management, but for most companies that have not yet fully invested in this transformation, growing market mania around "Big Data" and looming regulatory changes that demand increased data transparency continue to generate considerable anxiety.
While many insurers have already spent and continue to spend heavily on core-system and technology modernization, most still find their efforts have fallen short of expectations and needs when it comes to information management. If data is expected to be realized as a strategic asset, insurers can no longer continue to merely tweak existing systems and business models to clear this data management hurdle.
However, operationalizing information management enterprise-wide is neither an easy nor short-term exercise, as demonstrated by programs already under way at companies that have pioneered the effort. But for many, the potential benefits to be derived from successfully organizing, governing, consuming and analyzing available data assets — both internal and external — are likely well worth the investment.
Still, to achieve holistic data fluency, optimize data exploitation and realize a positive ROI, insurers will need to dismantle numerous roadblocks embedded in their current infrastructure, hardware and software, corporate culture, and business models.
Information rich, knowledge poor explores challenges and potential solutions to mastering information management and realizing data as a strategic asset.

3. Strategic Planning
Strategic Planning
Information Technology and data management play an important role in virtually all
industries today. Proper alignment of these fundamental elements with business processes
is critical for ongoing success in today’s competitive market, regardless of sector or size.
Whether you are a pharmaceutical company with regulatory and intellectual property
concerns, a research/educational institution concerned with consolidation of legacy or
inhomogeneous systems, a financial firm needing a new data center, or a manufacturer with
long term backup and analysis requirements of sales and distribution data, properly includ-
ing these types of concerns into your long range plans is undoubtedly important to your
mission.
At RDS our core competency sits within Information Technology and we strive for
client solutions that are robust, maintainable, scalable, secure, and of course, economical.
Thinking through these dimensions in a dynamic world, with a focus on your business
future, is vital to your success.
Is there significant consensus on your future IT directions?
What are the goals you perceive and will they change going forward?
Will you have the appropriate IT staff and capital to really implement these goals?
Should you build vs. buy vs. outsource?
How do you handle change management?
These and many other questions and decisions will be essential to defining your
strategic plan and carrying your mission to vision. Using an external un-biased advisor with
years of technical experience, the ability to assess your environment on your terms, and
guide you through important choices, will give you additional resource to assist you in such
deliberations and speed up your planning process.
“One size does not fit all” may be somewhat cliché, but all too often impulsive
decisions based on the latest technology are deployed, one that may not properly sized for
your operation. For example, virtualization is not right for all environments – what are the
implications, can you support it, etc. RDS can help you sort out the large number of
available and projected technologies to fit your real long term goals.

5. Business Continuity Services
Business Continuity Services
Most businesses today have one or more IT elements that ‘always need to be up’. This can be a
critical application, database, or web service; a storage array, a datacenter, or for those that are global,
follow the sun, support multiple locations, etc., their entire IT operation. As technology dependency
becomes more and more vital to operations it is imperative that these critical-to-business IT elements
be made as fail-safe or redundant as possible.
Business continuity is dependent on time, i.e. how long will it be before anyone notices or what
duration of an outage can be withstood before it adversely impacts business? The requirements for this
vary greatly as do the technologies required to implement and support it, the cost, acceptable level of
risk exposure, etc. With the complexity of equipment and component interdependencies that exists in
today’s datacenters, servers, networks, and even power sources, it can be a difficult task to sort this all
out and/or have time to address it properly. This is especially true when limited resources are available,
where main or production issues always take precedence, and so on.
Outages can be planned or unplanned, but in either case certain utilities, like email, are expected
to be solidly available – always. Business Continuity planning and implementation will ensure that your
operations will remain as functional as they need to be around the clock.
With the significant technical depth, experience, and technology partnerships that RDS has,
especially in mission critical, 7x24 environments, we are well equipped to aid you in your business
continuity efforts. Whether you need help architecting High Availability (HA) systems or a Storage Area
Network (SAN), implementing database replication or other data duplication to a remote site, backups
or network review, we can assist you. We have significant practical depth in the full life cycle of many
products and scenarios.
Disaster Recovery is a special case of Business Continuity and provides you with an operational
alternative in the event of a true disaster (e.g. datacenter is destroyed by fire or a natural disaster causes
a blackout in the entire geographical region containing your central office). Planning for these special
cases should also be taken into consideration and can also be addressed by RDS as needed.

6. SAN Optimization & Consolidation Services
SAN Optimization & Consolidation Services
RDS offers various SAN optimization services, including Hitachi Data Systems USPV. By
introducing tiered level storage and reorganizing applications, RDS can seamlessly optimize your
environment. RDS also has expertise in consolidating, merging, and migrating between the various
SAN environments offered by all the major vendors on the market.
With the year-on-year growth of storage requirements that have become the norm, and
the expectation of this trend continuing and perhaps accelerating into the future, it is imperative for
operations to have an optimized and consolidated approach to SAN and other data infrastructures.
Achieving scalability, while consolidating and controlling these environments, will be, and most likely
already is, critically important.
RDS subject matter experts have been involved in the design, development, and implemen-
tation of a multitude of storage installations for many large enterprises. This is a substantial focus
for us and one of our more prominent core competencies. Let RDS know what your needs are,
large or small, and we will help you make the right decisions for your current and future environ-
ments.

7. Data Consolidation & Migration Services
Data Consolidation Solutions from RDS
Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) solutions can help with data consolidation initiatives. These solutions
extract information from a variety of data sources, transform that data into a common format, and finally
load the resulting data into a single data store, or warehouse.
With years of experience, RDS has become a recognized expert at transformation; a key component of
ETL. Leveraging this expertise, our Professional Services team will help you plan and implement your data
consolidation project. ETL and data consolidation projects are staffed by subject-matter experts and
typically consist of several stages:
Developing content management models to repurpose information assets locked in
disparate, incompatible archives.
Transforming them to a common format, as selected by you to meet your business requirements.
Loading these assets into a common archive.
Building your consolidated archive.
Data Migration Solutions from RDS
With the rise of networked storage infrastructure such as SAN, NAS and ISCSI, data migration is also no
longer a simple matter of copying data from one system to another. Migrations have become considerably
more complex as storage architectures have shifted from DAS to large-scale network storage topologies
involving tens to hundreds of servers and storage volumes with complex physical to logical mappings. This
added complexity has made migrations unpredictable to the point where 65% of migrations adversely
affect IT operations. With many mid-sized and large storage systems commonly ranging to 100 Terabytes
and beyond, in-house migrations have become unattractive economically, especially considering operating
risks, strain on staff, etc.
Key RDS migration benefits include:
Saves Time. Compared to in-house projects, RDS's method is 4-6 times faster, and with a
guaranteed delivery schedule.
Eliminates Risk. Whether your needs call for online or offline migration, RDS will migrate your
data with no unplanned downtime. All migrations are scheduled, checked, and delivered on time,
according to a pre-determined schedule.
Simplifies Complexity. RDS simplifies migrations with patented, SAN appliance technology that
transparently connects hosts and storage systems with automation software that maps and verifies
correctness of each migration before it is performed.
Maintains Budget. RDS migrations are performed under a fixed-price, service level agreement for
on-time completion with a money-back guarantee.
