4. At the beginning of this book is told about the
friendship of Santiago with Manolin. Santiago is a
fisherman who has failed to catch a fish for 84 days and
gets the name "salao" which is tersial from bad luck.
Whereas Manolin is a small child who at first accompanies
him to go to sea, but after 40 days Manolin is finally told to
go to sea with other more successful fishermen.
The story of friendship between Santiago and
Manolin is written very touching, even though it only
appears at the beginning and end but when fishing alone in
this story, Santiago always mumbles if Manolin goes with
him, surely his job will be easier and surely Manolin knows
what to do. Manolin is very familiar with Santiago, in this
book it tells how Manolin already knew what to do when
with Santiago at Santiago's home. Even though Santiago
sometimes fantasizes about not knowing the state of the
world, Manolin continues to serve his questions.
5. One morning on the 85th day, Santiago sailed again alone and
hoped to catch fish. At first, he succeeded in catching fish, but
then told how the hook was caught in the marlin, which finally
found that the size was bigger than the boat he was using.
Santiago had to fight for 3 days without stopping so that the fish
appeared on the surface and finally succeeded in being killed.
During these 3 days of waiting, told of how Santiago struggled to
wait for the fish to appear, he often imagined Manolin at his side
and doing what had been known by Manolin, he also often
suffered injuries in both hands because he kept holding the rope
pulled by the fish. He also experienced cramps in his left hand
and regretted why he did not train him. During the wait, Santiago
managed to kill dolphins as food supplies. Santiago also often
murmured about his life, told how his story when he became the
strongest person in arm wrestling, he also often struggled about
his life, even he became desperate because the fish he was
waiting for did not come to the surface but eventually he rose
from despair with various things positive thinking.
6. Finally Santiago managed to kill the giant marlin and put it
on the side of the ship to sail back. But on the way back,
because the blood from the marlin was pouring out, inviting
the sharks to eat it. The next story is written how the
business of Santiago in killing sharks that continue to
appear, what about the strength that is almost non-existent,
but he kept trying with a variety of remaining equipment.
Until finally he feels tired and the fish he catches are used
up by sharks so that the remaining bones. Finally at the
end of this story, it was written that Santiago finally reached
the beach and was welcomed by Manolin, many fishermen
were surprised by the size of the bones from the fish that
Santiago had captured. Finally Santiago fell asleep in his
place and the story was over.
7. Hemingway was very detailed in writing about how
Santiago struggled, the danger it faced then how finally he
could rise. He described everything in detail. Good about
the struggle with various types of fish, quiet atmosphere
and solitude in the sea, as well as the psychological
character of Santiago. Supported by his experience of
fishing at sea and his writing skills are very visible in the
book he wrote.
The characteristics of Santiago's heroism and the never-
giving spirit are clearly seen when Hemingway tells in detail
how the old man had to fight alone to conquer his catch fish
and also his extraordinary efforts when he drove out sharks
- the sharks that were about to gnaw at his caught fish.
