Raster graphics originated from television technology and were used in some applications in the 1970s-1980s but did not become widely used until personal computer graphics improved in the 1990s. Vector graphics preceded raster as the more economically feasible option initially. However, as technology advanced, the more flexible raster graphics became more widely adopted, though vector remains better for scaling without quality loss. Raster uses pixels to represent images and is resolution dependent, working well for photorealism, while vector can scale seamlessly.
