What is a URL??? A URL, or  Uniform Resource Locator , is the location of a file on the Web. When you type the address of a Web page into your browser, you are typing a URL.
What Function does the URL perform in the context of the internet??? Returns your site URL, as specified in your config file. The index.php file (or whatever you have set as your site index_page in your config file) will be added to the URL, as will any URI segments you pass to the function. You are encouraged to use this function any time you need to generate a local URL so that your pages become more portable in the event your URL changes. Segments can be optionally passed to the function as a string or an array. Here is a string example: echo site_url("news/local/123");
Are there any variations or types of  URL’s ??? There are many types of URLs. At last count there were nearly a hundred different types of URLs. There is supposed to be a way to specify a unique type of URL for every type of content available on the Internet. Fortunately, you will normally ever only need to worry about a few of them.  Some examples are: http:  javascript:  ftp:  file:  mailto:  telnet:
