Introduction:
Rangpur became Bangladesh’s city corporation on 1 july 2012 and seventh division on 25
January 2010. Before that, it had been the northern 8 districts of the Rajshahi Division. The
major cities of this new division are Rangpur, Saidpur and Dinajpur. Rangpur has well-known
educational institutions, such as Carmichael College, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and
Technology University, Rangpur Medical College, Rangpur Cadet College, and Begum Rokeya
University.The central City - Rangpur - has a historical importance and identity. Mansingh,
commander of Emperor Akbar, conquered part of Rangpur in 1575. Rangpur came completely
under the Mughal empire in 1686. Mughalbasa and Mughalhat of Kurigram district still bear
marks of the Mughal rule in the region. During the Mughal rule Rangpur was under the sarker of
Ghoraghat. Rangapur Ghoraghat has been mentioned in the Riyaz-us-Salatin. During the early

Geography
Under the Rangpur division (one of seven divisions) composed of eight districts of the northern
Bangladesh, the District of Rangpur is bordered on the north by Nilphamari District, on the south
by Gaibandha District, on the east by Kurigram, and on the west by Dinajpur district. Rangpur
town is the divisional headquarter. The soil composition is mainly alluvial soil (80%) of the
Teesta River basin, and the remaining is barind soil. The temperature ranges from 32 degrees
Celsius to 11 degrees Celsius, and the annual rainfall averages 2931 mm.
Lifestyle
For shopping, there are two large shopping complexes. One is the older "Municipal Super
Market". There is a more modern building called the Jahaj Company Shopping Complex which
has Rangpur's only escalator. At the top of this building is a department store.
Karupanya has another store on Station Road which sells Rangpur's Satranji handloom carpets.
The carpets were made in the village of Nishbetganj and were popular in the Mughal era.
Karupanya established the cottage industry of Satranji at Nishbetganj village. Starting with just
five weavers, he has increased to more than 300 weavers today and is now exporting to foreign
countries on a small scale.
Climate
Rangpur has a tropical wet and dry climate. The climate of Rangpur is generally marked with
monsoons, high temperature, considerable humidity and heavy rainfall. The hot season
commences early in April and continues till July. The maximum mean temperature observed is
about 32 to 36 °C (90 to 97 °F) during the months of May, June July and August and the
minimum temperature recorded in January is about 7 to 16 °C (45 to 61 °F). The highest rainfall

History
Rangpur was conquered by the army of Raja Man Singh, a commander of the Mughal emperor,
Akbar, in 1575, but it was only until 1686 that it was fully integrated into the Mughal Empire.
Names of places like Mughalbasa (literal meaning being a locality of the Mughals), and
Mughalhat (literal meaning a “local market” organized by the Mughals) bear testimony to the
Mughal Association and past of Rangpur and its hinterland. Later on, Rangpur passed under the
control of “Sarker” of Ghoraghat. During the period of the British East India Company, the
Sannyasi Rebellion took place.
Language
Rangpur is a multi-ligual district. People of Rangpur have two languages- Rangpuri and Bengali.
But Rangpuri is used by most inhabitants. Bengali is more popular in the towns and among the
educated people. But a small portion of Santal and other similar people other languages also
which are their own.

54.6%. Establishment of Rangpur City Corporation, as Divisional City is now under way after
the establishment of Rangpur Division in January 2010. The area of Rangpur City Corporation is
estimated to be around 100 square kilometer accommodating about 6 million population by next
Census of 2011. Rangpur city would be the fifth largest city of Bangladesh after Dhaka (125
million), Chittagong (30 million), Khulna (10 million) and Rajshahi (8 million) estimated
population by the next 2011 census.

covers an area of 75 acres (300,000 m2
). The university has constructed four academic building
and started class from August 2011 in the main campus. Currently, the university has twenty-one

The Rangpur Medical College:
Rangpur Medical College is a big medical college of Bangladesh with a five story building of 6
partitions. Wards 1, 2, and 3 are medicine (3 is female), wards 4, 8 and 10 are surgery wards, and
ward 5 is ENT. Wards 11, 13 & 14 are gynae and obstetrics. There are also cardiology, ENT,
orthopedics, eye, skin-vd, gastro, psychiatry, paediatric surgery, paediatric medicine, urology,
and neurology wards. Rangpur Medical College Rangpur Medical College has been established
in 1970 with a 500-bed teaching hospital. The first batch of 100 students were admitted to
Rangpur Medical College, affiliated with Rajshahi University, in 1971. Currently, the yearly
intake has been increased to one hundred and fifty. Each year ten seats are fixed specially for
international students of South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan and
Maldives. The medical college is running with several other affiliated teaching hospitals in
addition to its own. These are the infectious disease hospital, hospital for tuberculosis and chest
disease, and the district hospital of Kurigram including six thana health complexes in rural
settings. New inclusions since 1991 are the nuclear medicine centre, coronary care unit,
diarrhoeal disease control and training unit, neuromedicine, neurosurgery, paediatric surgery,

radiotherapy, physical medicine department, and burn unit. The General Medical Council of the
United Kingdom has recognized the graduates of this college with effect from 1st January 1996.

Prime Medical College:
Prime Medical College Hospital is the teaching hospital of the college which started on 17
August 2007. It is a 500-bedded (750 beds proposed) hospital.
The hospital is a seven-stored building with all the modern facilities. It is a specialized hospital
in the northern region of Bangladesh which has well-equipped discipline of medicine, General
Surgery, Obstetrical, Paediatric, Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology,
Neurology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, ENT, Urology, Neurosurgery
unit and Neonatal ICU.
The Diagnostic Lab is well equipped with all the modern sophisticated medical equipment for
Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology and Histopathology examination.
Carmichael College: Carmichael College established in 1916 by some leading zamindars, is a
postgraduate college offering courses in 14 subjects in the faculties of arts, social science,
science and commerce.
Rangpur Cadet College: The most renowned educational institution in this region is Rangpur
Cadet College. Other renowned schools include Cantonment Public School &
College,Rangpur(CPSCR).

Rangpur Zilla School earliest educational institution of greater Rangpur, came into
being in 1832 as Rangpur Zamindar School. Some leading ZAMINDAR families and
Nathial Smith, the District Collector of Rangpur played an important role in the
establishment of the school. It was inaugurated by Governor General LORD WILLIAM
BENTINCK. It was housed in a large two-storied building donated by the Maharaja of
Cooch Bihar. Zamindar Rajmohan Roychowdhury (1787-1847) of Kundi was its founder
secretary and Krishna Nath Ray its first headmaster. It was taken over by the
government in 1857 as an aided institution and affiliated with the Calcutta University.
As part of the government scheme to establish a zilla school in every district, the
school was taken over by the government in 1862 and renamed as Rangpur Zilla
School. The government then sanctioned an annual grant of Rs 2,616 to the school.
Others: Rangpur Technical School and College and Rangpur Zilla School. Zilla School is
established in 1832, this higher secondary school is known for the quality of education it
offers.Other prominent educational institutions include Rangpur Govt. College, Begum Rokeya
College and Govt. Commercial Institute. Besides there is one polytechnic institute, one
vocational institute, around 282 high schools, 722 government primary schools, 38 junior high
schools, 193 NGO (Non Government Organization) operated schools and almost 370 Madrasahs
in Rangpur.

Radio: Bangladesh Betar (Radio Bangladesh) has a regional station in Rangpur which transmits
various programs of mass interest. Rangpur station has a broadcasting house and transmitters in
different locations. The Rangpur station transmits its programs in Medium Wavelength. The
popularity of the radio is low in Rangpur like other places of Bangladesh because of the low
quality programmes of Bangladesh Betar.

Tajhat Place
Tajhat Palace is located at Tajhat, the southern end of Rangpur city. It was the earlier high court
building established in 1984 called the Tajhat, a former zamindar’s palace. After the end of the
British Raj, the building was abandoned and decayed rapidly, although it was used for a few
years as a courthouse during the 1980s. In 2004, it was largely restored and turned into a
museum which hosts a collection of Blackstone Hindu carvings, calligraphic art from the Mughal
period and other objects d'art and coins from the area on display. Due to lack of funding, the
museum is sometimes closed.There were a fairly large number of eminent Zamindar families at
Tajhat. Dimla, Kankina, Manthana, Pirganj, Bardhankot, ete in the district of Rangpur. They had

magnificent and beautiful palaces of which the Tajhat Palace is most famous. Manna lal ray the
founder of the family was Hindu khatri and an adherent of the Sikh which at that time, was
obliged to emigrate from the Punjab and settled at Mahiganj, Profession it is believed that from
the conspicuous appearance of his Taj or jeweled crown his estate derived the name of Tajhat
manna lal ray, gradually be quire huge ladled properties in Rangpur his grandson Dhanapat ray.
A grand Daughter of ratanlal ray of nya dumka, who was another Punjabi in-migrant. Dhanapat
ray’s Grandson Upendra lel ray died at an early age and the estate there fore came into the
possession of his uncle Giridharlal ray who was a Munsift Giridhari lal having no issue adopted
Govinda Lal of Kolkata who success Ed to the Estate in 1879. He was a man of great public
spirit and Liberality because of which he was conferred with the title of Raja in 1835, Raja
Bahadur in 1892 and Maharaja in 1896 he metro largest death by being buried alive under the
debris of his own during the devastating earthquake of 1897.He was succeeded by his son
Maharaja kumar Gopal lal ray in 1908. The place is situated hree k. m. on the south –east
Outskirts of the town of Rangpur. This Magnificent edifice with about 76.20 m front age. Rises
in tow Stores and faces east . a 15.24m.Imposing broad staircase in the entre. Paved with
imported white marble. Leads directly above the portico to the upper storey. The palace is
crowned by a ribbed conical dome in the centre of the roof with a tall octagonal neck. Partly
supported on a series of slender semi-Corinthian columns. The balustrade on either said of the
imposing staircase was originally embellished with various sculptures of classical Roman figures
in Italian marble. But now these are totally missing. There are two semi octagonal projections at
each end of the front faced and a 9-144m. Projecting central porch. The alcony roof above the
porch is carried on four graceful Corinthian columns with round shafts. Whilst two similar
columns on each of the projecting ends of the building . Support a triangular gable. The palace is
laid out in the form of an English "U" With its open end to the west. Beyond the entrance at
ground floor level. This is a very large hall measuring about 18.288m *13.716m. A 3m wide
corridor runs the entire length of inner block. Two broad wooden staircases. One is on the middle
of the north wing and other is one the south of eastern main block provides access to the upper
floor. Probably this place was built by Maha Raja Kumar Gopal lal Ray in the beginning of the
20th century AD from 1984 to 1991. the palace was used as a Rangpur high Court branch of the
Bangladesh Supreme court in 1995. The palace was declared as a Protected monument by the
department of archeology. recognizing its outstanding archeological value the government of
Bangladesh decided to shift the Rangpur museum here in 2002. Accordingly the palace in being
partly used as Rangpur museum since 2005.

Shyampur Sugar mills
It is a very well known place in Rangpur district under the Badargonj police station. It is very
popular for Shyampur Sugar Mills Limited. Here is a chemical industry as well as few cold

Teesta Barage
In the great Rangpur region, no economic development took place until the 90s, mainly because
of the yearly flooding the region used to see before the making of "Teesta Barrage." The coal is
found near this district. There is a large military cantonment in the town.

Shopnopuri is a beautiful Amusement Park. It is one of the most attractive artificial tourist places
in North Bengal of Bangladesh. Shopnopuri is located at Aftabganj, Nababganj subdistrict of
Dinajpur district. Shopnopuri is a theme park and its total area is 920 acre. You will need to buy
ticket to enter the park. At the gate, two statue of angels are waiting to welcome you.
Rangpur central zoo is one of the main attractions of Rangpur city. Rangpur zoo is located east
side of Hunuman-tola road beside police-line not far from Rangpur district Administration
office. In this zoo there has lots of Bangladeshi wild animel. Without it African lion, Black
Panther, Hippopotamus, different kinds of birds, snack & some rare animal & birds. Founder of
Rangpur zoo President Ershad, was responsible for lots of additions to Rangpur. They donated
land for a zoo with a massive park in the midst of town.The Rangpur zoo was built in 80th
Decade in 19th century.A wide area with lush green trees and grasses also houses different
animal species. The zoo has a variety of animals, mostly in small British-era style cages. The zoo

does have a large aviary, a small monkey cage and an endangered Bengal tiger, in addition to a
rhinoceros, lions, a leopard, peacocks, alligators, turtles, spotted deer, and many other animals.[10
Pairabondh
A museum and women's training centre was established in Pairabondh, the birthplace of Begum
Rokeya. It is half an hour drive away from Rangpur city.
Mithapukura Mosque (Masjid)
From Mithapukor pond about half km distance in the side of Rangpur-Mithapukur road it is
situated.The masjid is oblong size and it has three domes.its volume is about 10.66m*4.11m. in-
front of this masjid beside the surrounded yard there is an entrance door which is made by
Bangladeshi local culture. There are also 4 corner tower which is higher than the corner of the
roof and finished as a size of kiupola. by dividing the oblongate mosque in three parts with 2
literal vault here it is 3 made semi round domes. 3 mirhab,the in-front wall, para-pate wall,and
the drums of the domes all r designed with beautiful panel,spinach,flower, geometrical sizes and
as hoods of snake.from the inscription of the wall it is known that the masjid was made by sheikh
Mohammad asher son of Sheikh Mohammad saber in 1226 hijri (1801).
Kellaband Mosque (Masjid)
Kellaband Mosque is situated at C.O. Bazar on the north of Rangpur-Dinajpur Highway 02 km
north-west of Rangpur town. This three-dome mosque is about 200 years elderly. A concrete
well & an ancient cemetery are lying beside the mosque.
Pirgacha Landlord House
The Manthana Kingdom Estate was established sometime around 1100 AD. Her Royal Highness
Maharani Joy Durga Devi Chaudhurani of Rangpur was the most influential and famous ruler of
the kingdom. After the death of His Royal Highness Rajah Rajendra Narayan Roy Choudhury,
the Monthana Kingdom Estate was divided into two parts among his two sons Rajah Harendra
Narayan Roy Choudhury and Rajah Bhairab Narayan Roy Choudhury of Rangpur. As a result
the landlord house also divided into two parts. After the death of HRH Rajah Harendra Narayan
Roy Choudhury his son HRH Rajah Mahendra Narayan Roy Choudhury succeeded the kingdom.
After his death HRH Rajah Bhupendra Narayan Roy Choudhury succeeded to the throne of the
kingdom and was the last crowned king of this kingdom estate. His son HRH Prince Jyotirindra
Narayan Roy Choudhury was born in 1947 and is the crown prince of the estate. Soon after the
birth of HRH Jyotirindra Narayan Roy Choudhury, India and East Pakistan got independence
from imperial British rule and the partition of Bengal took place. HRH Prince Jyotirindra
Narayan Roy Choudhury of Rangpur now resides in Kolkata, India with his family. His son
HRH Prince Rupendra Narayan Anirban Roy Choudhury of Rangpur who uses the name
Anirban Roy Choudhury is the present Titular Crown Prince of the kingdom-estate. The
Pirgaccha Landlord House popularly known as the Manthana Palace or Manthana Rajbari is a
massive structure spread over hundreds of acres of land and houses ponds, lakes, buildings,
temples, and various other assets. HRH Princess Kabita Rani Roy Choudhury is the present legal

owner of the entire kingdom-estate. The Kachari House of the Manthana Palace is now used as
Pirgasha Registrar Office.
Devi Caudhuranir Jamindar Bari
The Landlord-King of Pirgacha sub district HRH Rajah Narendro Narayan Roy Choudhury, son
of HRH Rajah Raghabendra Narayan Roy Choudhury died in 1765 without any legacy. Then the
wife of the late King, HRH Maharani Joy Durga Devi Chaudhurani of Rangpur managed the
kingdom for three decades. HRH Maharani Joy Durga Devi Chaudhurani is popularly known as
Devi Chaudhurani in history and was one of the most successful and popularly known rulers of
the kingdom. During the time of Sanyasi Bidroho (ascetic revolution)for the independence of
India, she along with Bhabani Pathak raged war against the British. In this insurgency Collector
Richard Gudland and army commander Lieutenant Brenan, scared of the war situatio, forfeited
the kingdom from Devi Chaudhurani. However the imperial British could not keep the kingdom
forfeited from the illustrious Maharani, and soon after she again came to manage the kingdom
and she ruled until 1791. Later in history, the famosu Bengali novelist, Bankim Chandra
Chattopadhay, who also happened to be the Collector of Rangpur and under the employment of
the British rule, wrote the famous novel Devi Chaudhurani to portray her as a dacoit-queen. The
novel has been adapted into very famous movies with the 1974 movie starring Suchitra Sen in
the lead. And National Award winning director Rituporno Ghosh is adapting the novel into
another movie in recent times, in which Aishwaria Rai Bacchan will play the lead role of Devi
Chaudhurani. However the novel has tarnished the characted and image of Her Royal Highness
Maharani Joy Durga Devi Chaudhurani to a great extent. His Royal Highness Rajah Bhupendra
Narayan Roy Choudhury of Rangpur was the last king of the kingdom-estate. An earthquake
damaged much of the palace built by Devi Chaudhurani. However the palace was rebuilt several
times and is a sprawling structure spread over several hundreds of acres. The property, land and
the assets of the estate kingdom is presently legally owned by Her Royal Highness Princess
Kabita Rani Roy Choudhury of Rangpur, who lives in Kolkata, India. Her son His Royal
Highness Prince Rupendra Narayan Anirban Roy Choudhury of Rangpur who commonly uses
the name Anirban Roy Choudhury is the present Titular Crown Prince of the estate-kingdom.
HRH Prince Anirban Roy Choudhury is currently studying the law at Symbiosis Law School and
lives in Pune, Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata.
Itakumari Jamindar Bari
Itakumari Landlord house was established in 19th century. Shibchondro elder son of landlord
Rajarai was the founder of Itakhula Landlord house. Now most of the building are ruined . Now
a well two large pond and elderly building witness of time. point to be noted that leaders of the
public rebellion Devi singha and his assistant Harram sen one time on a time get the owner by
forcing. Again Shibchanda and Devi Chowdhurani lead the public rebellion and free the people
of Rangpur from Devi singha's torture.
Deowan Bari Jamindaar Bari
The founder of Deowan Bari Jamindaar Bari was Fonivuson Mojumdar. Fonivuson Mijumdar
Father name was Landlord Radharomon and mother's name as Kusum Kumari Devi who was the

Pirgachha
Pirgachha is one of the up zillas in Rangpur that carries some interesting aspects. The name is
derived from some unknown "pir"(religious guru), buried under a tree("gach"). In other words,
there was this tomb of a "pir" under a big tree in Pirgachha. Pirgachha has a Rajbari, home of the
Jomider (barons, if you will, or landlord, appointed by the King at that times). This one historic
residence is now almost ruined. Also, there is a minitarure prayer place such as a mosque (for
Muslim) and a mondir(for Hindu) built together. It shows a friendly Hindu-Muslim community
at those ages.
Chicli vata
Near the stadium, there is a very beautiful place called 'Chicli vata' surrounding bij many lakes
and rice fields.

Alleviating Poverty by Strengthening the Potato Seed:
Toward Alleviating Poverty of Rural Potato Farmers by Strengthening the Potato Seed System in
Bangladesh. The area under potato in Rangpur is about 15% of the total potato area of
Bangladesh. A rapid rural appraisal was used to gather information from farmers on farmers’
seed sources, number of generations of seed used from different sources, seed quality, varieties
used by farmers, disease incidence, yields. The Bangladesh government has doubled cash
incentives to 20 percent against exports of potatoes to encourage exporters, Potato exporters will
receive the subsidy against the net repatriation of the free-on-board (FOB) prices of their
products between April 1 to June 30, according to a circular issued by the central bank of
Bangladesh.
Demand for jute products growing in Rangpur
An increase in demand for jute products, especially handicrafts has made small enterprises of the
north optimistic of going ahead. More than 150 enterprises in Rangpur division are now
producing jute goods such as mats, travel bags, vanity bags, wall mats, sandals, pen-stands,
wallets, curtains and various kinds of showpieces, as per the data of various commercial banks
and Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC). About 26,000 female
workers in five northern districts have so far been trained up in making and dealing in various
jute goods.

The name lime in connection with this fruit is often misleading because there are very few
similarities between the Rangpur and true limes. However, Rangpurs are highly acidic and can
be used as a substitute for commercial limes. The Rangpur is of Indian origin. It was introduced
into Florida in the late nineteenth century by Reasoner Brothers of Oneco, who obtained seed
from northwestern India. In the United States the Rangpur is used as an ornamental or potted
plant, but outside the United States it is used principally as a rootstock.
Tobacco:
The farmers said they generally spent Tk 20,000 to Tk 22,000 for per acre of land in farming
tobacco to produce 20 maund per acre to earn a net profit of over Tk 60,000 on an average.

Many Rangpur natives speak Rangpuri language. Rangpuri is an Indic language spoken by ten

In Bangladesh, these include Rangpuri, Bahe Bangla, Anchalit Bangla, Kamta, Polia. The main

Sports
Rangpur is one of the important places of cricket in Bangladesh.The most popular sport in

Since them, all the GOCs and many officers serving in various headquarters and units have given
their eefforts in keeping the Rangpur Learner’s Golf Club (RLGC) growing bit by hit. From a 3-
hole golf course, gradually RIGC grew to be a 9-hole golf course. It attracted army golfers
including serving officers, ladies and children and it became an excellent venue for learning golf.
With the passage of time the number of golfer also increased substantially. It may be noted that
RLGC used here training grounds of different units, which were being used by the units during
training hours.
