Railway transportation is very energy efficient compared to cars. Electric trains are more efficient than diesel trains, with one electric long-distance train consuming only 17 kWh per km compared to 1.7 litres of diesel per km for a regional diesel train. A car uses all of its engine power to run at maximum speed, while a train only uses 33% of its locomotive power. Trains also maintain speed better during coasting. There are opportunities to improve railway efficiency further through greater electrification, improved braking energy recovery on electric trains, and use of battery powered trains on less frequented lines instead of diesel.
