At one point, New York City was second only to Charleston in the number of slaves. When Wall Street was actually a defensive wall, half-freed blacks formed a community north of it, outside the wall. Southern Africa in 1750 consisted of small chiefdoms that were ruled by chiefs and engaged in trade. By the mid-18th century, the region had not been greatly affected by European colonialism. However, from around 1750, the societies underwent a period of transformation known as the "time of troubles" or "Mfecane" where there were major political and social upheavals, wars, and migrations. The causes of this period were complex, but included some chiefdoms growing more powerful and tensions increasing, as well as expanding European colonial settlements placing more pressure on indigenous groups.

The assistant archivist applied for a grant to digitize a collection of Umatic tapes that comprised a news magazine run within a larger news collection. Their library had no budget for outside digitization and outdated in-house equipment. They wrote white papers describing collections to identify fundable projects. Approval was initially blocked due to concerns about the large amount of digital storage needed for the digitized content. They addressed this by educating library leadership on their work and working with digital preservation to plan sustainable storage. The grant request included funds for salaries, digitization services, a website, launch event, and one year of digital preservation for the funded content.

Navigating Access to Legacy Oral History Collections
The J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of
Utah has a robust oral history program, with over 32
projects spanning 1 25 linear feet with topics as
varied as the first transcontinental railroad to the
Occupy Wall Street movement. Unfortunately, as
with any oral history program, providing access has
not been without its challenges. Issues have included
interviews that have inadequate waivers, missing
final drafts, nonexistent transcriptions, and
mismatched audio and transcripts. Moreover,
providing online access presented privacy, ethical
and copyright concerns. By working collaboratively
with the American West Center, legal counsel, and
IT services, the library has been able to overcome
these challenges in order to provide improved access
to our oral history collections. In this session our oral
history team will explore the above problems and
present the solutions that have enabled the
University to provide more complete access to these
one-of-a-kind treasures.

Interview with Bernice Gibbs Anderson, 1974 “And there is another story I heard from Park Valley...maybe it's a good thing I can't remember their names, but I'm sure it's authentic because this man lived there for years and… he's dead, of course, but he told me one day that the people out there found one day, bodies of as many as two carloads of Chinese that had been washed up on the north shore of the lake. Now they had been killed some way before that. The sentiment against the Chinese coming in here was so bad at the time that nobody seemed to want them to come in except Central Pacific. And they were good laborers. Had it not been for the Chinese, they wouldn't have built Central Pacific in the time they did.”
- 5. Interviews with Japanese-Americans in Utah “At that time... the railroad gangs were mostly Oriental. Either Chinese or Japanese. And the Great Northern also had Irish immigrants. And the cowboys in Montana didn't like these foreigners invading their country. And putting the Iron Monster through their open plains. So some drunken cowboys came into camp and shot up and killed several of them. And Father escaped and hid out in the fields and came to Salt Lake after about a month of walking nights and hiding in the daytime, which is quite a distance, about 500 miles.” -- Edward Hashimoto, son of Edward D.
