2. I Researched into people of
different ethnicity/ races and I
found a slide someone else
has already produced with the
stereotypes to go with them.
Surprisingly, theses
stereotypes are common
things I hear day to day.
The inaccuracy of ethnic
groups can affect how we
perceive one another and
relate to one another.
Children are especially
vulnerable to the media’s
stereotypes because they
have a very limited view of
the world.
3. ETHNICITY
The audience expectations of ethnicity is that people
with a different race within a British TV drama will
have less power for little minorities in terms of
ethnicity. There is a lot of racist violence in the film
‘This is England’. This may represent the violence in the
real world, therefore it teaches younger people about
what is right and what is wrong but also about what has
happened in the world. There are many TV dramas that
have characters in which represent ethnicity. For
example, Wild at Heart features black Africans. Law
and Order UK features a black women a junior crown
prosecutor. Citizen Kahn is the first BBC’s South-Asian
sit-com. Goodness gracious me is an archetypal
representation of Indians. In particular, the TV drama
Shameless represents ethnicity through a young man.
Just because he is black and in his 20’s, he is instantly
accused of committing the crimes. This can be seen as
very stereotypical because of what the media has
made him look like.
4. Stereotypes in tv dramas have a purpose. This is because most of the audience can
relate to stereotypes therefore they become relatable but at the same time become
something the audience are likely to remember but get a reaction. This means the tv
programme is likely to have an increased word of mouth and therefore get more views.
As a whole it shows the brutal reality many face raising a element of concern to
perhaps try and decrease racism.
Many see stereotyping as one of the main contributing factor to racism and have
provided evidence to support the theory that media promotes racism by influencing
the audience’s stereotype on different groups of people which can have both a
negative but also positive impact.
Why do TV programs portray social
racism
5.
6. What issues can social racism
on tv programmes cause
Those at the younger generation are generally influenced by what they see, therefore seeing
racial issues on tv programmes could lead to them growing up believing these stereotypes,
creating the way they treat others of a different race worse or differently. However, this could also
create conflict between the tv producers and the audience as the audience may not find ‘racism’
funny as they feel like it could cause an increase in racism as it sort of justify why people are of a
lower class.
