• Field experiments, including correspondence tests: 
– NL: 70% of employment agencies go along with 
discriminatory request 
– UK: people with minority/foreign sounding name are a 
third less likely to be shortlisted for job interview 
– FR: applicants from poorer suburbs are discriminated 
based on their address 
– CZ: majority sounding name is 75% more likely to be 
invited to an interview than Roma sounding name 
– DE: young applicants with Turkish background have to 
send 7 applications instead of 5 to be invited to interview
National level research:

• Salaries and prospects 
– HU: Roma paid under minimum wage 
– PO: wages of native Poles higher than non-Polish nationals, 
for comparable jobs 
– BG: few people prepared to have migrant manager

This diagram shows the overall assessment of survey respondents in the Eurobarometer survey of 2012 on the question of whether they think that ethnic origin or skin colour is a disadvantage when applying for a job. These percentages are even higher if we filter out the ethnic minority groups as respondents themselves, but even without doing that these number are quite staggering. Obviously, they are influenced by awareness and ideas about the topic, so the fact that Finland, Sweden, Hungary and Croatia score the highest doesn’t mean that these countries have indeed the biggest problem. And the same applies conversely to Lithuania and Latvia. But in general we see that anything between 20 and 60 percent of the people have the impression that racial discrimination happens.
  2. While those were perceptions, we also have ways to measure discrimination directly, and that’s mainly by way of experiment. Those experiments have however only been carried out at national level, so there is no comparative data.
