Brief Explanation on the Practice of
Compounded Dhikir & Comprehensive Supplications

“All that is in the heavens and the earth extols the glory of Allah.
He is the Most Mighty, the Most Wise.”
(al-Hadīd : 1)
A. Virtues of doing Dhikir and Supplications
There are numerous proof found in the books of hadith or
books written specifically about dhikir or supplications
emphasizing the superiority of doing as much dhikir and
supplications. For example, Allāh said in the Qur’ān:
ً‫ﻼ‬‫ﻴ‬ ِ‫ﺻ‬�‫آ‬َ‫و‬ ً‫ة‬َ‫ﺮ‬ْ‫ﻜ‬ُ� ُ‫ﻩ‬‫ﻮ‬ُ‫ﺤ‬ِّ‫ﺒ‬ َ�‫ﺳ‬َ‫و‬ .‫ا‬ً‫ﲑ‬ِ‫ﺜ‬َ‫ﻛ‬ ‫ا‬ً‫ﺮ‬ْ‫ﻛ‬ِ‫ذ‬ َ��‫ا‬ ‫وا‬ُ‫ﺮ‬ُ‫ﻛ‬ْ‫اذ‬ ‫ا‬‫ﻮ‬ُ‫ن‬َ‫ﻣ‬ٓ‫آ‬ َ‫�ﻦ‬ِ ��‫ا‬ ‫ﺎ‬َ�‫ﳞ‬�‫آ‬َ‫ﻳ‬
“O you who have believed, remember Allāh with much remembrance.
And glorify (exalt) Him morning and evening..”
(al-Aĥzab : 41- 42)

َ‫ر‬ َ‫ﻨﺪ‬ِ‫ﻋ‬ٌ ْ‫َﲑ‬�َ‫و‬ ً�‫ا‬َ‫ﻮ‬َ‫ﺛ‬ َ‫ﻚ‬ِّ‫ﺑ‬ً‫ﻼ‬َ‫ﻣ‬�‫أ‬
“…wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life.
But al-bāqiyat al-şāliĥāt are better to your Lord for reward
and better for [one's] hope. ….”
(Al-Kahfi : 46)
Hadith narrated by Abū Sa‘id al-Khudri z:
The Prophet n said:
“ …increase practicing al-bāqiyat al-şāliĥāt.”
They asked him n:
“What is it, O, Messenger of Allāh?” He n replied:
“takbīr, tahlīl, tasbiĥ, taĥmīd and
lā ĥawla wa-lā quwwata illā billāh.”

B. Dhikir with Meanings of Compounded Reward
1. Ibn ‘Alan Şiddīqī v commented on the hadith above that
such dhikir gives compounded reward due to its meanings
It proves that reward for good deeds is not necessarily
proportional to the difficulty in doing it, because Allāh
can give compounded rewards for miniscule deeds.
2. The kind of dhikir with compounded reward such as the
above is a gateway Allāh l bestow to His slaves as a
consolation to them and that they may increase their
rewards without much toil and effort…
Hadith narrated by Ibnu ‘Abbās c:
The Prophet n came out from Juwairiyah x apartment in
the morning to perform the congregational dawn prayer in
the mosque.
He came back in the forenoon and found Juwairiyah x
still sitting, doing dhikir.
The Prophet n said, “Are you still in the same position as I
left you?”.
Juwairiyah x replied in the affirmative.
Thereupon the Prophet n said: “I recited four sentences
three times after I had left you. If these are to be weighed
against all you have recited since morning, these will be
heavier”.
These are:
َ‫ﺎن‬َ�ْ‫ﺒ‬ ُ�‫ﺳ‬ِ‫ﻪ‬�ِ‫ﻘ‬ْ‫ﻠ‬َ� َ‫د‬َ‫ﺪ‬َ� ِ‫ﻩ‬ِ‫ﺪ‬ْ‫ﻤ‬َ ِ‫ﲝ‬َ‫و‬ ِ‫ﷲ‬،�َ‫ﺿ‬ِ‫ر‬َ‫و‬َ‫ﺎء‬ِ‫ﻪ‬ ِ‫ﺴ‬ْ‫ﻔ‬َ‫ﻧ‬،ِ‫ﻪ‬ ِ‫ﺷ‬ْ‫ﺮ‬َ‫ﻋ‬ َ‫ﺔ‬َ‫ﻧ‬ِ‫ز‬َ‫و‬،
ِ‫ﻪ‬ِ‫ﺗ‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻤ‬َِ‫ﳇ‬ َ‫د‬َ‫ا‬‫ﺪ‬ِ‫ﻣ‬َ‫و‬
Glory be to Allah and Praise be to Him as much
as the number of His creations,
and as is worthy of His pleasure, and the weight of His throne,
and as much as the ink of His words.

3. According to many scholars, the reward given to reciters
of such dhikir is due to the additional phrases such as َ‫ﺩ‬َ‫ﺪ‬َ‫ﻋ‬
(number of), ‫ﺔ‬َ‫ﻧ‬ِ‫ﺯ‬ (the weight of), َ‫ء‬ْ‫ﻞ‬ِ‫ﻣ‬ (as full as) in the
dhikir. Detailed explanation can be found in the fatwas and
writings of the scholars, especially in the books of hadith
elucidation or meanings of dhikir.
Included in this category are dhikir which implies broad
and extensive meanings although it lacks the additional
phrases as explained above such as:
َ‫ﻚ‬ِ‫ﻧ‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻄ‬ْ‫ﻠ‬ ُ‫ﺳ‬ ِ ْ‫ﲓ‬ِ‫ﻈ‬َ‫ﻌ‬ِ‫ﻟ‬َ‫و‬ َ‫ﻚ‬ِ ْ�َ‫و‬ ِ‫ل‬َ‫ﻼ‬َ�ِ‫ﻟ‬ ‫ﻰ‬ِ‫ﻐ‬َ‫ب‬ْ‫ن‬َ‫ﻳ‬ َ َ� ُ‫ﺪ‬ْ‫ﻤ‬َ‫ﺤ‬ْ‫ﻟ‬‫ا‬ َ َ� ِّ‫ب‬َ‫ر‬ َ�.
O Lord, all Praise is due to You as befits the Majesty of
Your countenance and the greatness of Your Authority.
Hadith narrated by Ibnu ‘Umar c:
The Prophet n said:
One of the slaves of Allāh said:
“O Lord, all Praise is due to You as befits the majesty of Your
countenance and the greatness of Your authority”.
The angels were unsure and did not know how to record it, so
they ascended to heaven and said:
“O Lord, your servant has said a word we are not sure how to
record”.
Allāh, although He is most knowing of what His servant said,
replied to them:
“What did My slave say?”
The two angels said: “Indeed, he said:
“O Lord, all praise is due to You as befits the majesty of Your
countenance and the greatness of Your authority”.”
Allāh said:
“Write it down as My servant has said it until he meets Me
and I reward him.”

C. Reasons for Compounded Reward
Basically, a good deed (ĥasanah) is rewarded by Allāh l
ten reward points while a bad deed (sayyi-’ah) is given one
bad mark. However, the reward for good deeds could be
multiplied due to several reasons such as:
a) the doer’s intention - example: the reward for one who
studies the deen with the intention of spreading Islam is
not equivalent to learning with the intention of personal
usage and self-practice.
b) the time of deed and practice - example: on specific
days in a year, specific day of the week and specific time
in a day or night.
c) the place of deed and practice - example: The reward
for a good deed in the Masjid al-Haram is 100,000 times
compared to elsewhere!
d) the situation or condition of a the person - example:
John who earns £10 a day and spends £5 in the way of
Allāh l gains much more reward than Nick who earns
£1000 a day and spends £50 in the way of Allāh.
e) practicing dhikir in silence and secrecy – A‘ishah x
narrated that the Prophet n had said that silent dhikir,
which is not heard even by the angels, is rewarded 70
times over. On the Day of Resurrection, Allāh l will
summon all the creation for reckoning, and the recording
angels will bring the recorded accounts of all the people.
Allāh will ask them to verify if there is any more good
deed to the credit of a certain individual. The angels will
submit that they had not omitted anything from his
recorded account. Allāh will then say, there is yet one
good to his credit, which is not known to the angels, and
it is his dhikir in silence…
f) from the bestowment of Allāh - example: the rewards
obtained by the Prophet n is not equivalent to the
actions of anyone else.

g) the types of deeds and practices - example: practicing
a dhikir with meanings of compounded reward against
the usual dhikir.
h) supplications with comprehensive meanings -
example: asking Allāh for forgiveness for all Muslims,
and not just for oneself.
Compounded Dhikir & Comprehensive Supplications
( ‫ﺍ‬ ُ‫ﻊ‬‫ــ‬ِ‫ﻣ‬‫ﺍ‬َ‫ـــﻮ‬َ‫ﺟ‬َ‫ﻛ‬ْ‫ﺫ‬َ‫ﻷ‬‫ـ‬ِ‫ﺎﺭ‬َ‫ﻭ‬‫ﺍﺕ‬َ‫ــﻮ‬َ‫ﻋ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﺪ‬‫ﺍﻟ‬ )
1. The word ‫ﻊ‬ِ‫ﻣ‬‫ﺍ‬َ‫ﻮ‬َ‫ﺟ‬ (jawāmi‘) is a plural of the word ‫ﻊ‬ِ‫ﻣ‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﺟ‬
(jami’), which means: comprehensive and inclusive. In
other words, simple words with extensive and broad
meanings.
2. The phrase, ِ‫ﺭ‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻛ‬‫ﺫ‬َ‫ﺍﻷ‬ ‫ﻊ‬ِ‫ﻣ‬‫ﺍ‬َ‫ﻮ‬َ‫ﺟ‬ (jawāmi‘ul-aʣkār) is also known
as ‫ﻒ‬َ‫ﻋ‬‫ﻀﺎ‬ُ‫ﻤ‬‫ﺍﻟ‬ ُ‫ﺮ‬‫ﺍﻟﺬﻛ‬ (al-ʣikr al-mudhā‘af) which means a dhikir
which when recited or practiced, gives compounded
reward to the reciter.
3. Likewise, the phrase ِ‫ﺕ‬‫ﺍ‬َ‫ــﻮ‬َ‫ﻋ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﺪ‬‫ﺍﻟ‬ ُ‫ﻊ‬‫ــ‬ِ‫ﻣ‬‫ﺍ‬َ‫ﻮ‬‫ـــ‬َ‫ﺟ‬ (jawāmi‘ul-
da‘awāt) means supplications with comprehensive
meanings, ie. prayers that have deep and embracing
connotations.
Ibnu ‘Aţā‘illāh al-Sakandārī wrote in Tāj-al ‘Arus :
Whoever is approaching the end of his life, running out of time and
desires to acquire good deeds and reward which he has missed due
to his negligence to Allāh; he should excessively practice al-ʣikrul-
jāmi‘ah (dhikir with meanings of compounded reward). When he
does that, (it becomes as if) his remaining short life is prolonged,
such as when he says:
ِ‫ﻪ‬ِ‫ﻘ‬ْ‫ﻠ‬َ� َ‫د‬َ‫ﺪ‬َ� ِ‫ﻩ‬ِ‫ﺪ‬ْ‫ﻤ‬َ ِ‫ﲝ‬َ‫و‬ ِ ْ‫ﲓ‬ِ‫ﻈ‬َ‫ﻌ‬ْ‫ﻟ‬‫ا‬ ِ ��‫ا‬ َ‫ﺎن‬َ�ْ‫ﺒ‬ ُ�‫ﺳ‬،،ِ‫ﻪ‬ ِ‫ﺷ‬ْ‫ﺮ‬َ‫ﻋ‬ َ‫ﺔ‬َ‫ﻧ‬ِ‫ز‬َ‫و‬ ،ِ‫ﻪ‬ ِ‫ﺴ‬ْ‫ﻔ‬َ‫ﻧ‬ َ‫ﺎء‬َ‫ﺿ‬ِ‫ر‬َ‫و‬
ِ‫ﻪ‬ِ‫ﺗ‬‫ﺎ‬َ‫ﻤ‬َِ‫ﳇ‬ َ‫د‬‫ا‬َ‫ﺪ‬ِ‫ﻣ‬َ‫و‬
Glory be to Allah the Almighty and Praise be to Him as much
as the number of His creations, and as is worthy of His pleasure,
and the weight of His throne, and as much as the ink of His words.

5. Thus, logically - and Allāh knows best - infinite reward
can be obtained when one practices dhikir with meanings of
compounded reward plus doing it based on other reasons
which promises compounded reward such as time. For
example: Doing dhikir with meanings of compounded
reward on the nights of Ramadhān or especially during the
night of laylatul qadar, will result in the gain of infinite
reward, unknown except to Allāh Most High!
6. Finally, all Praise and Perfection belong to Allāh l,
while defects and shortcomings are of His slaves.
