• Initial release quality was poor and got some press attention.

• Clients who have still not upgraded four years after the initial
release.

• Oracle is taking previous EBS releases to Extended
Support, and charging a premium (21%) on support. Some
EBS customers are choosing to pay the fee rather than
upgrade.

• Some Oracle EBS customers are out of compliance with
requirements mandated by Customers, Vendors and or
Federal Regulations, still choosing not to complete an R12
upgrade.

• Fear levels;
1. Completely no fear we are ice cool and have not
started the upgrade.
2. Somewhat concerned so our organization is
delaying the upgrade
3. High level of fear and have not started the R12
upgrade process, but we know we should have.
4. Absolute state of panic and we have already
started the R12 upgrade process.

• Initial Release Quality
- It is now four years since the initial release
and the product has gone from 12.0 to
12.1.4.
- Most of the initial release bugs have been
resolved , a recent full suite upgrade
produced three Oracle EBS standard
functionality bugs.
- The upgrade process itself is well understood
and robust.

• Is it a technical upgrade? (IT Project)
- Where we can run the patch utility, do some due
diligence regression testing and move to
production?
• Is it a functional upgrade? (Business Project)
- Where we avoid. any changes to the technical
infrastructure or adopting new technology. But the
business teams have to change the business
process and regression test all the business
processes?

• The R12 upgrade is a combination of a technical
upgrade and a functional upgrade with new capabilities.
• For many clients getting to R12.1.3 requires a database
upgrade, some may also require or desire an O/S
upgrade as well.
• In the least case running the Oracle EBS R12 upgrade
patches and scripts is the technical part of the upgrade.
• The functional part varies greatly from module to module
from new form look and feel to the introduction of
subledger accounting in the financial modules.

• Fear Level Impact?
1. Reduce the fear, as knowledge is power.
2. Would not increase or decrease it.
3. Increase the fear, as this is a big challenge.
4. We have to start our upgrade project over
again now.

• The uncertainty surrounding the R12
upgrade usually comes with trying to
determine which of the 2500+ changes will
impact the organization.
• For many organizations the biggest
uncertainty comes in trying to understand
which of the major functional changes are
mandatory and which are optional.

1. None, we know exactly the impact of R12 changes.
2. Moderate, we are not exactly sure of the impact.
3. High, we do not know which changes are
mandatory and which are optional.
4. Extreme, our implementation is 90% complete and
we still do not know the impact of the changes

• The majority of the changes are in the Finance area, such as Ledger
Sets, Subledger Accounting, EBS Tax Engine and Bank Models.

• New definition mandatory versus optional changes.
- This functionality is changed in R12, and your organization will have no
option about using this changed functionality as a result of the R12
upgrade.

- Optional changes are functional changes available in the upgraded R12
EBS, which can be used by the organization being upgraded.
• Different list for almost every organization!

impact of customizations on the upgrade.
• Almost all EBS implementations have some level of
customization.
• Creates a lot of doubt when considered in the context of
R12;
- Is there a complete list and inventory of the customizations?

- Are all of the customizations still relevant?

- Which cust0mizations will be impacted by the R12 upgrade?

- How much effort will be required to upgrade the customizations?

3. This would be very important as doubt is high on R12’s impact to
our customizations.
