This is an evolution, characterized by different architectures and steps. We are focusing here on helping customers move to theright and build their Dynamic Data Centers. On the left we have the silos. Rapidly proliferating silos of servers, storage, and networking resources combined with countlessmanagement tools and operational processes have led to inefficiencies and soaring costs in the data center. Next, we have zones of virtualization, representing that this is how most people have currently deployed virtualization—perhapsinfrastructure applications, or perhaps one department, etc.Next, we have a shared infrastructure like we have been talking about, forming ITaaS or also what many call an internal cloud. Finally, we have the use of external cloud services. Note that a service provider in the cloud market would fall on the far right.Typical customers will have more than one architecture (perhaps all 4) and likely be moving from left to right over time.At a macro level, IT investment on silos is reducing while IT investment for shared infrastructure (the two on the right) isincreasing. Hence our shared vision and investment in this space.Flexpod Value PropositionFlexPod is built around three key capabilitiesLower Risk with a validated, simplified data center solution and a cooperative support model for a safe and proven journey to virtualization and toward the CloudEnable business agility with Flexible IT that scales out and up to fit a variety of use cases and environments, such as SAP, Exchange 2010, SQL, VDI, and Secure Multi-Tenancy (SMT)Reduce TCO with higher data center efficiency, while decreasing the number of operational processes, reduce energy consumption, and maximize resources.
FlexPod is the most efficient way to make a successful journey to your next-generation data center.FlexPod accelerates the transformation from infrastructure silos to a virtualized, shared environment with pre-validated, standardized, scalable building blocks that leverage a next-generation data center solution from Cisco, NetApp, and leading OS and hypervisor partners.Unlike other solutions, FlexPod is a flexible platform—designed to fit many environments and handle mixed workloads. It can be easily tuned and optimized for your specific requirements. They are backed by easy-to-use tools that facilitate your design and sizing process—so you can add applications, and scale up and out as necessary. The solutions are integrated—so you can count on centralized and simplified management. And the solutions are pre-validated—so they facilitate rapid, repeatable deploymentFlexpod Flexible componentsNexus 5xxx series switchesUCS B-seriesIncluding memory countProcessor speedsTotal blade countNetApp FAS3xxx series controller and higherAdd-on cardsExpansion modulesFlash CacheShelves and drives typesShelf countDrive types – SAS, SATA, FC, SSDDrive sizes – 450GB, 600GB, 1TB, etc.
Many organizations perform the following steps when servicing a new applications or requirement.Collect detailed requirements.Architect & Size: Work with the vendors to architect and size the system. Depending on the number of applications and the number of vendors involved, the sizing and architecting phase can take many weeks and often months.DC Planning: Work with the Data Center team and negotiate power, floorspace, and cooling requirements for the new system.Procure Equipment: This involves many weeks of getting quotes, ordering, and receiving the new gear. Dealing with a large organization plus shipping times can easily take six weeks.Detailed Design: This phase involves working out exact configuration for compute configuration, network connectivity, storage layout, security, and isolation.Deploy: Configure the equipment for use.Test: Create and run a test plan to ensure that the equipment is correctly installed and meets the original requirements.By using FlexPod, many of these phases are compressed or removed altogether – customers taking the standardized approach to IT have repeatable demonstrated better than 50% faster deployment times over traditional approaches – Cisco-NetApp-VMware provide the reference collateral (sizing, design, deployment, testing), to standardized this deployment approach to all customers. Many organizations don’t know the future demands that will be placed on IT, but IT is expected to be very responsive. So going a step further by forward (preprovisioned) FlexPod as a pool of infrastructure, the compute, network, and storage resources are on the floor already, and it is a very rapid process to meet the business needs. You can efficiently preprovision infrastructure only if it augments pools of shared infrastructure and satisfies a wide range of application requirements. FlexPod for VMware has been architected to meet a wide range of application demands from shared infrastructure pools that are centrally managed.BE the fast to market with applications: and if you are not first to market you are nobody (ebay/facebook what came after that)
FlexPod—Scale Horizontally with FlexpodFor example, a base FlexPod configuration can support 1,500 users for these four popular workloads simultaneously: virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SharePoint, and SQL Server—and it provides sufficient headroom for additional workloads – this can then scale through replicating the FlexPod. Huge operational efficiencies result when choosing a standard deployment chunk for infrastructure and using that in a repeated fashion to scale out to meet the needs of the businessFlexPod then makes it easy to deploy shared infrastructure. Components are integrated and standardized for fast, repeatable, consistent deployment. FlexPod eliminates much of the guesswork involved in:-Resource procurement -Capacity planning and data center sizing -Identification of Operations and provisioningAs a result, you can understand and better predict the exact power, floor space, usable capacity, performance, and cost for each FlexPod deployment. The Easy management and scalability means fewer people to manage, fewer element to buyRevenue PotentialExample:an average size Flexpod will cost 500K. So 3 of them will be 1.5 million and about 750K for Cisco.Paul will give us a good example of deploying SAP on Flexpod, But roughly this infrastructure will beneeded for a large SAP deployment (if 26000 SAPs (a sizing metric for SAP) needs about 1 B200 Bladeand a large deployment requires around 1000000 SAPS which means 40 Blades).
The FlexPod is not a fix configuration. It provides an excellent starting point as shared infrastructure for organizations that want to run mixed workloads. The starting point is the MS Productivity Applications, but the FlexPod architecture allows different resources to be scaled while maintaining the same design and implementations. For example: the initial sizing guide covers the MS Applications (VDI Windows 7, MS Exchange 2010, SharePoint 2010, MS SQL 2008) and over time will cover many different applications.But:-Organizations today view desktop virtualization as a way to better control costs and use limited resources to flexibly manage large-scale desktop infrastructures while increasing security and deployment efficiency. Desktop virtualization software allows customers to deploy and manage desktop environments and applications centrally. Scaling the flexpod vertically for example can provide this capability. You need more high performance blades and more IOPS, you can remove older blades and you can use higher performance ones. Here is another example: Many companies have lots of developers developing and testing their applications. They need an effective ‘Test and Dev’ environment. Traditionally, this means more computing and prehaps less storage. Just use again higher performance blades.Data Protection & BackupMnay other companies want to make sure they meet their backing up requirements or limit application downtime, which means an effective Data Protection & Backup infrastructure. Traditionally you need more storage for this. Again, you can replace your existing storage from Netapp with a higher storage box from NetappMessage here is: - use of installed investements to grow into a Flexpod-Cost reduction because all that is on a single solution- Improved time to market: Just add capacity and storage- Improved TCO (you only put one single solution and manage them centrally ) /ROI (invest protectio n of scaling iup and down)
Goal of this slide: Our joint solution is tightly integrated across server, storage and network layers so the entire infrastructure can be managed centrally.Key points: Each pool of server, storage and network resources is a dynamic IT asset that can be managed independently. So you can reduce risk and cost while boosting IT agility to response to business needs. These resources can be managed centrally with the likes of VMware vCenter Server and Cisco UCS Manager. -Cisco’s UCS Manager and NetApp storage plug-ins integrate tightly with VMware vCenter Server.-NetApp Virtual Storage console can be accessed directly via the vCenter console, enabling VMware administrators to manage key storage tasks such as provisioning, cloning, resizing, and backups independently.- Changes to the network are exposed and relayed to vCenter, so the server administrator can work more efficiently and effectively.-Our centralized management tools with simplified processes require fewer administrators for overall system management.- Our Open Management Framework enables integration with management vendors such as BMC, CA, and others to enable orchestrated operations across the entire infrastructure stack. The FlexPod has a unified architecture that helps enterprises manage the architecture centrally. The key components that help manage the FlexPod centrally include the VMware vCenter, the Cisco UCS Manager, OnCommand plug-ins for VMware and Microsoft.FlexPod comes with OnCommand unified manager so you can manage storage as one or more pools, using policy-based automation for provisioning and data protection. In addition, the FlexPod and OnCommand’s open APIs and SDK offer integration with various third-party orchestration management tools or home-grown tools, so you can continue to leverage your existing investments. FlexPod also includes OnCommand Insight Balance which monitors FlexPod performance. Use Insight Balance performance analytics to predict and identify performance capacity and performance headroom for a wide range of applications, in both your physical and virtual environments.
Rather than taking a big bang / forklift replacement approach, you can evolve to the FlexPod and start getting benefits as you go.Given different equipment may not be on the same lease cycles - this protects existing investments, allowing you to move stepwise at each layer toward FlexPod – while starting to get a number of the FlexPod benefits. The cooperative support agreement covers a wide range of configurations.
Since Support is critical in cloud oriented engagements, Cisco, NetApp and Vmware have implemented a cooperative support model for Secure Multi-Tenancy.This is a global model and it includes 24 hour, seven days a week coverage. A single call can be placed with any of the three vendors and coordinated call routing will take place, should this be required. The Cooperative Support Model defines the process of engagement between Cisco, NetApp, and VMware. Should it be required, any combination of the companies will coordinate a real-time engagement with the customer for resolution. As indicated on this slide, it should be noted that customers do need a valid contract with all three vendors as the basis for this cooperative support model.
