6. The word X entered English usage in 1922 via French. Unlike in
French where the word is rather unloaded, in English, it has erotic
undertones and is almost always used for certain objects designated
for women however in recent times, some manufactures now design it
also for men.
In French, X is derived from Y, which is of Latin origin. The Latin root
could be used for one of these multitude of things:
Flax, rope, string, linen cloth, thread, or net for hunting or fishing.
Identify X.

9. In 1957, when Kerala suffered a rice crisis, the government tried to
replace the staple by X made from tapioca. This substitute was not
only easy to produce but also more nutritious than rice. However, it
did not fit well with the cuisine of Kerala.
Linguist G. Alessio argues that the word X can have two origins. The
first is the Medieval Greek word for dirge referring to the use of X as a
funeral meal. The second is from Greek word makaria meaning food
made from barley on adding the suffix -one.
What is X?
2
12. (Almost) all of us know the three names of this item. Here’s some etymology trivia:
1. Most Western English speakers would know it as X, a word of Igbo origin first
used in the US around 1670s, (via the trans-atlantic slave trade). To most Indians,
it sounds pretty pretentious (and my parents would be disappointed if I call it this).
2. The Indian English word for it, Y, refers to a (not-so-often sexualized) female body
part. Surprisingly, this word too was first used in the US, deriving from the
description of the shape of the object in question. However if you ask for Y today
in the US, you’d get sponge cake instead.
3. The Hindi word for it is derived from Tamizh (via Sanskrit). The first available
documentation of this object is in Sanskrit along with a description on how to
serve it to kings.
What the fuck am I talking about?
3
15. The word comes from John X Scotus (c.1266–1308), the Scottish Franciscan
scholar who, with Thomas Aquinas and William of Ockham, was one of the
leading Scholastic philosopher-theologians of the High Middle Ages. X’s treatises
were widely influential throughout West Europe, earning him the papal accolade
Doctor Subtilis (Subtle Teacher) and posthumous beatification from Pope John
Paul II in 1993.
However, with the advent of Renaissance, the New Learning, and then the
Protestant Reformation, many of X's theories were challenged or rejected by
scholars, who used the term X in a pejorative sense to denote those who foolishly
clung on to outmoded doctrine. Gradually X-man or X was used more widely for
anyone stupid or dull-witted.
What is the derogatory term, X?

18. Historically, the left side, and subsequently left-handedness, was considered
negative in many cultures. The Latin word ________ originally meant "left" but
took on meanings of "evil" or "unlucky" by the Classical Latin era, and this double
meaning survives in European derivatives of Latin, and in the English word X.
The opposite, that is the right side or right-handedness were considered good,
auspicious, and right. The Latin word ___________ means right and gives rise to
the word for a skilled person.
Fuck the right wingers and the right handers. Just give me X.

21. As to how the word has come to be associated with disaster, some have
suggested that an empty wine bottle never pleases anyone.
Others advance the theory that whenever a glitch was discovered in the bulb of a
piece of glassware, the blower would simply turn it into an ordinary bottle, a
______ and, therefore, a disaster.
______ derives from Late Latin word which stems from the Old French flacon and
Middle English flagon. Since the act of ______ was said to be that of bottling, it
became _____ in Old French which ultimately led to the English synonym for a
bottle.
What are these synonyms for disaster and for bottle?

Veetavanam (which means desired abundance or a desired forest). It draws
from the Carnatic raga Keeravani.
He suggests that this raga is a suggestive salutation to a particular individual
and he hopes that it would be welcomed by musicians and music lovers of
both the East and West. In the process of creating this raga, a challenge was
that Carnatic music does not employ harmony.
Who is this dedicated to?

president of the Academy took it to the extremes. In 2002, Vasu tried his
terror tactics on a particular chief guest X at the inauguration of the music
season.
The event was running late, and no one had expected how well people will
receive X. The Academy lectern was too tall for him and a special platform
was placed behind it for him to climb on. He delivered his speech in English
and there was loud clapping at the end of every sentence. When the speech
came to an end, Vasu stood up, ready to get a Secretary to deliver the vote of
thanks. “Mr President,” X said. “I am aware that there are many people in the
audience who know only Tamil and so I have brought a Tamil translation of
my speech. With your permission sir, I will now read it.”
5
41. No one else could have gotten away with reading the same speech twice that
evening. After the reading of the Tamil speech, X said “This is a great
occasion Mr President Saar, and so I have composed a special song for it.
My __________ members will now perform it. But before that one of my
colleagues will read out the lyrics.”
The applause hit the rafters even as what looked like a minor army came on
stage bearing all kinds of musical instruments. Vasu had given up by then.
By the time the national anthem was sung, the event was 45 minutes late. X
then drove to MS Subbulakshmi’s house and presented her with the award in

X is one of the most popular Indian musicians outside India and is known for
his collaborations with artists from across the world. His influence on his

Y on the other hand is known for integrating Indian folk music, Carnatic

Carnatic intonation and stylistic flourishes create a comic mismatch of style
and word.
